5 Tips For Buying A Used Truck Topper | DIY Truck Bed Camping Unit

- Here is my top 5 tips and advise when you are looking at buying a used truck topper or even thinking of buying a new truck topper for your DIY truck bed camper. It seems like truck camping is often done on a budget or seen as the budget way to camp and explore. However, be careful when trying to find a budget truck topper, I have experience first hand what it is like living in a 200 dollar truck topper off of Facebook market place. Did I still have fun - Yes. But it was a big hassle to deal with the downfalls of a cheap topper.
1. Buy a topper that fits the make and model of your truck
- you may have to spend some extra money to get the correct topper but it is worth every penny. save money elsewhere
2. carpeted interior
- Great for many things, and all-round bonus to have
3. height of the topper
- chose the height that fits your needs
4. Working windows
- having some airflow when you are back there is much needed
5. Roof Rack
- a topper with a roof rack gives you many possibilities (and as I mentioned some toppers already have the roof rack rails installed which is a large bonus)

Personally, I think your color differentiation (black and gray) work well together. I would have had a hard time passing on that price too.
I just roughed mine up with sandpaper then put rolled on bedliner on. It matched up with my Black Silverado pretty good. Cost me only about $50 dollars.
Go to a auto store and get matching spray paint to match your truck and use 2K clear coat and you’re set. No more then $80 to match your camper to your truck.
thats ridiculous...no way this way would match to trucks with pearl paint.
Don’t forget sliding rear windows so that you can pass beverages back-and-forth!

Decided to put a cap on my 2000 Dodge, so I made sure I found a used 2nd gen off of a 96. Great advice, find the one for your model so it fits correctly. Not going to camp in mine so windows weren’t an issue. Also if you park your truck in a garage make sure it will still fits, a rack or an bump up wouldn’t allow me to use my garage. Get the correct color so it looks like at a part of the truck.
I have an early 00's ford F-150.....having a bear of a time finding a topper because of the shape of the cab and the specific shape of the toppers for these model years. I've been looking locally for weeks...and finding out that I'll have to drive up to 5 hours away to find the right one for my truck. I don't plan on camping in mine, just covering the bed, and having a stealth way to lock up my fishing/hunting gear when I pull into parking lots/while travelling. My other vehicle is a little hatchback car- even with a topper I've quadupled my cargo space, lol.
Lucky to find matching model to my RAM, my truck is black & topper is gray like yours.
I loved my high top shell, made trips from and back to Alaska sleeping in the back.

I think that color topper looks better than black would on your truck!
Food for thought... consider getting a hood wrap the color of the shell and it'll not only look great but make it all look totally intentional!

Id rather have a high rise one. Looks better and better head room. Im planning a road trip from kentucky to amarillo texas then to colorado to see some feiends and then back to kentucky. I might even try and hit new mexico to see the desert out there. Thanks for the videos man its a lot of help. Hows the shorter bed like? My f150 has a long bed which i imagine will be much more comfortable.

Didnt consider there may be a difference in cab shape quad cab vs crew. Ended up buying new but I was looking at a used crew cab 6'4" cap for my quad cab, could have been a problem. Big fan of the carpeted liner and sliding windows with bug nets for the reasons you described.
Either did I! but just happy I came across that info lol and yes the carpeted liner makes life just a little bit nicer!
Some beds are tapered too.

If you could hang a bedspread like a mosquito net inside it would add an extra layer of insulated air within the cap and cut down a lot of moisture within. Also reflective heat blankets under carpet on floor and bed walls. Always sleep with the clothes you intend to wear the next day under your bankets. Nice setup, I'm looking for a cap for a rebel. Is there a noticeable hit to mileage?
I didn't notice any mileage drop. If anything it would probably make the truck more aerodynamic. I did notice that the rear end does sit a little bit lower but RAM having coils in the rear it makes sense.
I think you did good on the color because if you had black don't you think it would be hot in the summer?

High rise top allows you to sit up with a bed on the wheel well. Older backs know the deal.
How many inches can you get away with it? I might buy a used 74.5x61" cap and my current one fits well at 76"x60" so not sure whether it'll fit :(

I learned from your video. So, lol RAM 6.4 beds are not created equally. The mega cab 6.4 is wider than the quad. At the rear., besides the cab curve you mentioned LOL. Looks like yours is same issue at rear.
Ya they are oddly different shaped cabs depending on the type of cab you have. not really sure why that is but regardless a good thing to look out for when trying to buy a topper

Want to know if a 2007 topper (i think it was for a 2008 ram 1500 with 6.3ft bed from A.R.E. will fit on the Ram 1500 2016-2020 6.3 ft bed crew cab?
Yes, I have a 2017 RAM 2500 crew cab, my cap came off my 2008 1500 quad cab, it still the same size, just a little different spacing between the rear of cab and front of cap, only modification I had to-do was trim the rear door to clear the spoiler on the tailgate, but he's correct, caps are brand specific anymore.

I just got one for a 2007 F-150 super crew. $700, LEER. It's in great shape. I got a bid on paint 2 stage $1350 (cough cough). Will leer really paint it for $400?

Ya the local leer dealer in Victoria, BC said they could paint a shell for around 400 bucks. which I honestly thought wasnt a bad price.
