    As a new ham, a newer General, and an even newer IC-7300 owner, my head was spinning trying to filter out interference. Thanks for a VERY helpful explanation of the twin PBT!

    A real lesson here, thanks, I use an old IC-735 which has PBT which works just fine but now having seen the twin PBT in action on the IC-7300 what a difference, as you say all software controlled, oh how things have moved on ............................
    Thanks for the very informative video, good work.

    Hi. VEry nice explanation about Twin PBT.
    This very useful during contest, if we want to 'focus' to certain station. Usually, I start by narrrowing the bandwidth using the outer ring dial. Most of the time it works effectively. If the QRM is still strong, we can 'run away' from it, by using the IF shift, the center dial.
    Sometime, I use it just to 'focus' the station, and reducing the band noise.
    Thank you.

    In 32 years I've only used the filter between my ears to sort out different CW sig's on my personal gear but contesting with club equipment that has filters it has been helpful at times. During pileups when I'm running a frequency the filters are nice but not so much when working search and pounce. I have not owned equipment that has this sophistication but it good to know that it is available. 73 KB8AMZ

      I agree with you on the analog brain filter. Unless there's a contest going on or another close-by signal that's really strong - I crank up my IF bandwidth to 4kHz. Sounds gorgeous on my FTdx3K. 50 Hz filtering is amazing when needed.. if you can tolerate your radio making 'beeps' rather than 'tones'. Like a mid-70s $3 Japanese pocket radio. 73

    Great explanation, Kevin. I'm about ready to buy a 7300 and this helps. Another reviewer didn't like this IF filtering feature on the 7300, but really didn't explain why. I want to connect the 7300 to a computer and use computer control and logging. Understand that is easy on the 7300. I like the new 7610, but wonder if it is worth 3X the cost of a 7300?? Just getting back into active ham radio and my TS-440-ATS just doesn't have all the whistles and bells the new rigs have, although it still works great. I've subscribed and have enjoyed many of your videos. Thanks, Vee Butterfield W7IBB (Utah).

    Did you do a previous vid showing IF-shift (and/or other filtering) as a way to combat a nearby-freq strong signal from adversely impacting AGC? Or was that someone else? Oh, my unreliable memory.
    Anyway, very helpful vid, even though I don't have an Icom. This nonetheless helped me understand better how to use the tools/techniques I DO have at my disposal.

    seems kind of strange that the IC-745 offered both IF shift and PBT. it's all relative movement. whether your shift IF left or the PBT right, aren't you accomplishing the same thing? wouldn't make more sense to offer just one or the other. I suppose that's what the toggle button on the right is for.

  • @stolz5573
    @stolz5573 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm assuming that both of these concentric PBT knobs do the exact same thing, and that you could start with either the PBT1 (inner knob) or the PBT2 (outer knob) first, and then rotate the other one typically in the opposite direction if needed. Are these assumptions correct?
    Unfortunately the explanation of Twin PBT in the 7300 manual is not very helpful but after watching your excellent explanation of this I have a much better understanding. Thank you Kevin for the valuable content you have provided. 73, K1OD

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct in your assessment. You could start with either knob and rotate the other in the opposite direction. You can also rotate them together to shift your newly shaped filter up or down entirely.

    • @loughkb

      No, but I can't see why you'd want an audio passband almost as wide as human hearing. All the adjacent noise and transmissions would make for very difficult listening.

      Yo Kevin!:
      Great to hear on the banking situation, did you opt to close the account & go with another institution, I'd advise a credit union, they have a VAST network of CU's that are inter-connected where you walk up, give them your name home institution (and password, which I HEARTILY advise,) and you can do virtually ALL of your banking as if you were at the home instition! Hope that's what you did..

    Thanks Kevin, I was gonna ask what your option was on ic-7300. But then I noticed this old guy wasn’t using his Kenwood in the motor home, it appeared another radio working in the camper. When did that sneak in? Now I like another video on how you hooked up the raspberry pi, which raspberry you would buy, and did you have to program it.
    Now if you ever come up to Manitoba, Canada, there will always be a spot for you, but don’t come in the winter it sucks. VE4RHM

      @@davidray4128 Icom's approach is more complicated, but maybe also a bit more flexible. You can easily shift one side or the other of the filter while also adjusting it's center and width this way.
      I have found that a quick way to 'tune' out an adjacent station with a twist of just one knob to tuck in just that side of the filter a bit.

    Quick Question. I've read & seen many articles & videos regarding the effectiveness of digital filtering between SDR manufactures. After my attempt to filter/ignore any ownership bias from the reviews it's apparent that Flex & Anon provide far better PB filtering especially during crowded band conditions relative to Icom. Understanding no manufacturer has access to higher quality 1s & 0s, what accounts for this demonstrable difference in performance?
