- In this video I discuss the modifications I made to my home bathroom to make it handicap accessible for my own use. Further modifications may be necessary depending on your disability and level of function.

1) Car and Driver in the john. Love it!
2) I love wide doors. Us pedestrians might consider them to make it easier to get in and out of rooms.
3) Why everyone doesn't use high toilet bowls is beyond me. I have crappy knees and would recommend them to anyone/everyone.

Thanks so much for the info/tips. My brother in law is confined to a chai. recently underwent a knee replacement; gonna add on or build so that we are handicap ready (if there is such a term). I hated having to negotiate all my movements in a non handicapped friendly house.

My house was built in 1950, so the halls are narrow, plus the sinks are high as well as the stove I bought 20 years ago. I did not think about being in a wheelchair 30 years ago when I bought the house, of course, but the expense to change even a few things would be prohibitive and probably decrease the resale value of the house. I have a big tub in one bathroom and a shower in another bathroom. I don't have the upper body strength to use the tub with a shower seat unless I have a new upgrade installed (wheel in type of shower)....and can't use the shower as it was all remodeled in the late 70's but still not good for getting into with out me sliding over a shower chair and being afraid I will fall. Right now I do a sponge bath with small buckets....and wash my hair over a sink-uncomfortable, but it works. Are the ride in/wheel into showers worthwhile, or a big expense for nothing? I am a recent amputee (12/2012 ) and just find myself feeling very small in a tall world. Tables, desks & all things 'normal' are not made to fit an adult in a wheelchair. How are you finding things that work for you? A shame there aren't programs to help people upgrade homes when this happens. I am VERY independent and even run my small bookkeeping business out of the home but it's a big challenge to adapt a home into a wheelchair friendly place. I miss cooking on my stove and jumping into the shower whenever I feel like it!
I have little info to give an amputee but from a paraplegic prospective (which may even be more restrictive due to muscle control) I personally feel roll in showers are more work than they are worth. Unless you have zero use of your arms I think a regular shower stall with a bench is perfectly fine. I even made a transfer bench for our bathtub that connects the toilet to the edge of the tub allowing for an easy transfer. I understand the troubles of adaptation but I think you could get away with the "less is more" mentality.
I don't have much arm strength so, I may need to get the roll in shower. I may try my old shower bench, but only when someone is here, in case I get stuck. I am a warrior, and do way more than anyone thinks an amputee can do. Thanks for your response. Love these videos, they give me great ideas.

great set up. mine is more narrower its a strait in back out set up. the one thing that helps my is my Pants Up Easy system. keep up the posts Reese #PantsUpEasy

Any idea on what the bar above the toilet tank (behind the toilet) is used for? I just use the bar beside the toilet to do my transfers and have never figured out how the other bar would be used.

How high is your sink? The one that was installed in my new wheelchair accessible bedroom is way too high. They all said that it is the proper height, but there is no way it is. I have to reach up to high. Mine measures 34” floor to top of sink. I need this lowered. Thanks
Is there a floor height difference (about a tile height) in the bath area that keeps the water in. If yes, is it easy to maneuver over that height via the wheel chair?

You said the wood floors were the right choice, but you do not use wood in the bathroom. What do you use there and how is it installed?
What is your floor to seat height on your chair if you could share also the height from the top of your legs to floor. Lastly what type of seat is that I have a cushioned seat from Wayfair I think. Thanks for the video.

+MrHalmik4 I've been told leaning side to side is the best in the long run because lifting yourself straight up can cause shoulder issues in the long run. I think 20 seconds is pretty sufficient for me.

if you can't fill your skin how do you know when you're full, if your appendix ruptures, or if you're about to throw up?
+Lyric WasHere I still have some internal sensation. Like I can feel when I'm full and feel pressure when I press on my stomach. Throwing up is the same...still not pleasant. :)

+dylan o boyle There may be programs out there but I'm unaware of any. My family did a few fundraisers after my injury that helped with the mods but a good majority were out of pocket.

+Jay Birdd Might as well be rubbing someone else out because that's about what it feels like to me...like nothing. Losing sexual feeling/function is just as bad as loosing your ability to walk if not a little worse. I'll put it this way: If I could pee, poop, have sex AND FEEL IT like I used to I would happily continue living life in a wheelchair. Not walking is the easy part.

+Paralyzed Living Right with you 100%. A study was conducted among paraplegics and losing bowel/bladder control was rated worse than losing the ability to walk. I would add sex right into the mix with no hesitation. Brian, glad to see you producing vids again.
