Great video. I didn't want to pay for parallels anymore. I didn't use it enough to justify the yearly cost. Also in case anyone doesn't know, if you had already used parallels or have it installed you can take the Windows 11 Arm ISO from parallels and use it in fusion. Only thing I had to do during the OOBE was to run the command to skip network check since it hung there. After you get pass that your all good. Install vmware tools and your'e good to go. No need to build the ISO.
I know... buying it for $79 or $99 is one thing. Paying for it every year is a bit too much... but I guess this is how software companies revenge and take money from us

1. Unzipped the file with TrendMicro's utility. Worked fine w/out Terminal
2. Do you think someone will write a utility that tells Windows games we are on an x86 box because I keep getting ARM is not supported messages and games don't run.

Thank you very much for this video. Parallels made a lot of money from me over the years but they are getting ridiculously expensive especially with their upgrade policies.
Why would you pay them money? I'd much rather buy a cheap gaming laptop that you can get for a $1000 on sales which you will own and then will still be able to sell, rather than this scam of a software. Unlike a stupid subscription, where you own nothing. I wouldn't even buy Parallels if it was just a single price of $30
@@TheAsdasd6699 no to gaming laptops, they are a bigger scam than apple. It’s better to just get a custom built desktop. Cheaper, better, and you don’t end up with two laptops.

Although I’m purely high end Mac user and don’t play much, I’ve got rid of these attempts to run games on Mac and just got cheap Lenovo Thinkcentre SFF. Inserted SATA SSD I had unused, bought RX 6400 (now waiting for Nvidia A2000 to replace it, but that RX is quite nice cheap card) and done with it.
Share all the specs please. And how much it was.
If you can really afford high end Mac, definitely get a separate gaming setup.
I installed this 2 hours ago using your video took like 20 minutes. Tried to install 6 games 4 worked 2 didn't. Assassin's creed 3,4, revelations and rogue work. Ghost recon wildlands and valorant didn't. Slightly laggy very much playable. But considering this is free, it's amazing.
old comment but, valorant will never work on VM, its their anti cheat system which doesn't let you run on a vm so you did have good success there with the other titles
@@yade1234 yes other titles worked great. I have base m1 MBP. except for ghost recon and valorant. Problem with both is easy anti cheat system. If we still had bootcamp it would have worked for sure. But VM is virtualised os. And in easy anti cheat goes deep like kernel level security. And VM does not have access to that. Atleast that's what I found when I did my Google search for solution to this.

Could you maybe make an update on running TOTK on mac m1’s? Theres been so many more versions of Ryujinx and different mods floating around it would be good to see the absolute best version available.
Right now I believe there is only 1 or 2 official Ryujinx releases for mac. At least last time I checked it’s been the same version for a few months. It is harder to develop switch emul software on mac, as ryujinx is pretty recent itself, so the official releases will be much slower than windows counterparts
Totk worked perfectly on my m2 macbook air, until I upgraded to macos Sonoma beta. Then it's performance reduced by half.
I believe getting your hands on a safe Rom is the bigger issue now since Nintendo issued a bunch of dmcas

It's worth noting that Windows ARM edition won't run a LOT of your favourite programs. Parallels still has a massive edge by using Rosetta natively to translate x86 to ARM, that lets you run nearly every Windows app (except high-end games). So I'll wait until VMWare produces something closer to Parallelsm because the whole reason to run a VM is to have something as close as possible to x64 Windows (for me). It's good to see progress though.

Andrew does such a great job in each video for us.
This is very impressive and is bringing me one step closer to not having to use a PC to game on. I wish there was Vulken acceleration for Linux VMs in VMware as I normally game on Linux and it might work better using rosetta to translate from x86 to arm.
PC is still a far far better option.

This is actually very impressive. Normally hardware must be made available to the VM through either sharing or passthrough.
CPUs offer sharing. This means the host and VM can use the same CPU directly without overhead but both sides need drivers - which they pretty much always do for CPUs.
Passthrough completely unplugs a device from the host and plugs it into the guest this means either the VM uses the GPU or the host, but not both. This is how we do VM based GPU stuff today and normally you need two GPUs for this, one for the guest and one for the host, and you need GPU drivers. This is because GPUs don't support "virtualization technology" like CPUs do.
In the case where you want to share a GPU but don't have access to hardware sharing and can't use passthrough because you only have 1 GPU - you do what parallels does.
That is; create a fake GPU in the guest, write a custom driver for that GPU then translate calls to the virtual card across into the host. This isn't as fast as hardware enabled sharing, but it works. Virtio on Linux is another example of this and now it seems VMware are making their own implementation!
Is 'creating a fake GPU' the same implementation used by Parallels?
@@spiderbite7849 correct, yes. The guest (Windows VM) sees the custom "Parallels" GPU. When the GPU is given instructions (via their custom driver), parallels forwards the instructions to the real GPU on the host, which maps to the equivalent commands for that host GPU.
This system is great for allowing VMs to use GPU acceleration on any host GPU, as long as the host side can map correctly. Both Nvidia and AMD make this very hard.
This is called paravirtualization and it's super impressive that VMWare are doing it and offering it for free

Is it possible to passthrough an egpu on macbook m1 ? ( I know that the egpu cannot be used for the macbook m1 itself but if it is just recognized by the system and then we are able to passthrough it to a vm would be insane because with a windows vm you could play many more games with no problem and with high fps.

Some competition against Parallels seems very welcome, as Parallels is way too expensive for gamers.
Just get ROG Zephyrus and ditch Macbook. Or if you're rich, get good specced macbook, gaming laptop and a PC.

@@Slurkz What? I ditched Macbook Air after realizing it can't game the way I want AT ALL! It's not like it can game the way I want.. Mouse acceleration stuff, resolution stuff, refresh rates. Would you really suffer that much because some e-waste? It was purposefully designed without support for such basic things. Even a 10 year old Windows laptop for 20 times less the price could solidly run old games, that's a huge difference.
Meanwhile you want to reduce e-waste as the conference at which rich people flew with tens of business jets suggested everyone to do. Like it could have been online or they could have ditched the private jets at least, but no, they're elite and you are merely obeying insect for them.
Thanks for putting this tutorial together. I had a few hiccups along the way, but I finally got it to work. I'm glad there is another alternative now to Parallels. Hope VMWare Fusion continues to be free for personal use.

So it's a crutch for a crutch. Not really impressive. Too far from playable. Maybe we could play 20 year old game like Deus Ex 1 on it, that would be impressive.
You're forgetting the fact that Control requires 8GB RAM MINIMUM to run, which Andrew set the VM up in this video with 4GB of RAM.
Not only that but the unified memory will have to also be allocated for the GPU VRAM, which the minimum spec requires a GTX 780 with 3GB of VRAM.
In a nutshell, Andrew didn't pick a good machine to demonstrate the capabilities of this virtual machine.

If you're just looking to run Minecraft Bedrock on Mac there's a launcher that emulates the Android version of Bedrock and runs very well. It's made for both Linux and Mac and runs really great on my M3 MacBook Pro. It uses Bluestacks if I'm not mistaken and all you need is to have purchased the Android version of Minecraft on the Google Play Store and then you just log into your Google account when you open the launcher and you'll be able to download the latest version of the game.
Super easy to set up and runs probably better than the Windows version since Android is more efficient (to emulate).

When I get to step 5:25, I gave it accessability permissions but I just keep getting an error where is says "no file found" but with no window to select a file. Very annoying!
The lag spikes you got during video game testing, is likely due to the 4GB given to the VM :)

Don't expect better performance from an older device especially without active cooling. JUST DON'T BOTHER GAMING ON MAC. Or use Geforce Now, but there are issues in all solutions to game on Mac!

How does the Windows work under Wm Ware in comparison to UTM?
Also, does this solution consumes less resources for general usage (not games)?
UTM is using QEMU and it's using a lot of CPU (sometimes 200%+ for light tasks)
UTM doesn't have ANY graphical acceleration on Windows, thus making any graphical work/3D/gaming impossible.

I love that game at 0:19 seconds. Played it for years and disappointed that it died on the Mac with the 32-bit rapture that happened a few years ago. We can use the Windows version on our Macs with VMWare.

Anyone having this problem? I'm on an M1 Max Studio and followed instructions to the best of my knowledge. Windows boots up and everything works. Downloaded steam.. no problem. But if I launch any of my games, they crash. I've tested it with a few older games. Haven't had a chance to test newer ones yet. Hoping to get this figured out. Thanks!

Does each of these services (Parallels, VMWare Fusion, Crossover) have different performance for games? And does one run faster than the other. Are their DirectX implementations different from each other? Which one should I get for maximum compatibility with my games?
Crossover is best
Yes, however if you want to play disk based games Crossover won’t work. You need Parallels of Fusion.
@DonBureq So old games that run off CDs or DVD’s, I have an original DVD copy of Crysis, it won’t install using Crossover as it lacks the ability to run disk games. It only works with digital games. So for disk games the only solution is to buy the game again digitally or use Parallels or VMWare.

@@Caleb_725 Yes, it worked but I think my MacBook is not powerful enough or that VMWare reduces its performance greatly because during the battle tutorial the characters didn't appear at all, I could only see the dialogue window unfortunately...

The windows x86 emulation on arm is actually notoriously bad. I suspect no matter how much parallels or even vmware improve, they can't control that. Windows hasn't invested nearly as much into their translation layer as apple did in rosetta 2 (cause they didn't really have to. arm isn't replacing x86 any time soon in that market share). This is a neat trick to run some windows software that isn't well suited for game porting toolkit or the like, but gaming, it'll never compete with wine based solution until windows improves x86 on arm emulation in windows.

thanks! was able to use this and get it running. was able to load into oblivion and runs at high at 60fps on my m1 macbook air. only issue is i can’t get anti aliasing to work or the game freezes on load. could be n issue that can be fixed with the game though. i’ll keep trying it ran awesome on parallels but i was only using the trial.

It literally says that you don't have an ISO file of Windows 11, actually you can download a Windows 11 ISO from anywhere you want

left for dead 2 runs pretty smooth on medium settings this is amazing and i do hope the develpment gets better and unlike utm you can transfer big file sizes without having to split and Concatenate them

Do you think it’s possible to use Game Porting Toolkit or Crossover to enable GPU rendering in pro 3D software like Maya? Maya got ported to Apple Silicon recently, but the Arnold render engine only supports CPU rendering on macOS. I’m sure it would be far from as fast as native support, but I imagine it might still beat out CPU rendering. I have no idea what’s possible though, I’m just curious. The difference between a game and other software is kind of a made up distinction, isn’t it?
The toolkit is for DirectX only. Unfortunately render engines are usually proprietary and not realtime graphics APIs, although Blender does support Metal based rendering and DX12 does support raytracing. I'd recommend, and I'm not saying this to be a smarty and I'm not even saying it because of Mac support, but if you haven't developed your setup/workflow around Maya yet I wouldn't even bother and just go Blender instead 🙃

Minecraft bedrock is playable on M1 Mac's without a VM, it uses a highly experimental project called MCPE launcher, which uses a lot of jank to get the Android version of bedrock running as native as possible

Thank you for the tutorial. I've just tested VMWare fusion, and it does support an external GPU with an Intel CPU. Did you have to buy the activation key?
Do you have to go through this long process everytime you want to run a Windows VM, or is it a one time setup, and it will be easily accessible next times?
This is not the only way to play with other.players on console if you have a plug in server you can do the same thing but using any version you want i have it setup to do exactly that

Funny… Although coherence mode seems a killer feature; in practice I hardly use it and I get annoyed when I do.
Followed the steps, but I get to the point where it asks for license, and it's saying that the license has expired and gives me the option to buy one or register for a free non-comersial for personal use license, which is what I did, but then the license that it gives is only for the non tech preview version, thus it's rejected by the tech preview installer.

@@frankpap2672 No, I even contacted vmware for that, but they told me something like, because this is a preview version, they are not providing any licensing for it.

@Andytizer it just doesnt run Grand Prix 3 like I can on Parallels, basically because of only one reason: VMWare SVGA driver does not have 8 bit color. Same happened to me on Intel Macs with VMWare Fusion. 8 bit color is needed for Hardware mode on Grand Prix 3, otherwise I can only run the game in Software mode (poor graphics). Other than that, games like Grand Prix 4 runs well. Parallels let me run both games just fine and buttery smooth.

I'd like to take a run at this, but my 2013/2014 Macs have joke hardware and ram sizes. I guess running a joke level installer would fit right in.
I am handy its useful on M processor macs, or high end intel models.

Been running RE 2 . Not perfect. Direct x 11 . But crossover and whiskey have not yet been able to run the remakes of these excellent Capcom titles. As of yet.
UPDATE: Crossover 22 with CX Patcher V.3.6 + Gstreamer runs RE remakes .

I'm running an x64 executable (a mod installer for a game) and it gives me an error message telling me i'm on a 32-bit OS which is unsupported, but i know that Windows 11 ARM has x64 and x86 emulation capabilities. In the emulation settings, all i see is force x86, but not the inverse. Any ideas?

To other future cheapskates: I unzipped like a normal human (not using terminal) and it was fine. I had to register for a key which was free.
Hello, my hard drive is stuck at 64GB even if I enlarge it in the vm settings, how I can change ?
I am getting a lot of black screen flickering in mine when running Xbox app for gamepass, if I switch monitors or resize the window it will go away for a bit but then comes back. If I manage to close the Xbox app then all back to normal. Up to date with Windows update and on 22H2. Update: this seems to be on my Retina screen with Use full resolution for Retina display switched on. If I turn that off then it works okay.

Doesn't look too great. I've got Parallels on my 16 core M1 Pro machine and it runs games like a dream. Left 4 dead 2 at max resolution/settings at almost 100 fps and it runs so cool too. Even my PC with a GTX 1070 struggles to do that without stuttering.
Isn't Left For Dead 2 game for laptop integrated graphics nowadays?
i am using a MacBook 14 m2 pro with 32gb of RAM and installed successfully win11. I wanted to play deep rock galactic on the Mac BUT when I click on play I get this notification:
d3d11 compatible gpu feature level 11.0 shader model 5.0 is required to run the engine
I really tried everything but it doesn't want to work and I don't actually understand why. do you maybe have an answer?
You can use following command to run setup script while installing Vmware tools
powershell -ep bypass and then run setup.ps1 script
does it works on intel macbooks? Can I run windows xp or lower versions?
Dont want to create a second bootable drive with bootcamp(windows) if i can run all my games (bc im not shure if intel macbooks are running them natively on macos) or emulate them in macos without issues. It would be easier to start windows xp 10 and so on in macos, would help to know if you recommend it.
vmware fusion pro is completely free now since broadcom bought vmware, so yes you can run any windows/linux OS on your intel macbook.
what do I do if it says "operation not permitted" after I choose e for the enterprise version? Once it says that it asks for my language however it doesn't pull up the list and typing "en-us" does nothing
could anyone tell me how does Minecraft work on this virtual machines, what kinda settings do I need to set in order to get a better gaming experience with my friends.
