Those singers would fall flat without that talented band behind them. It's not just the music, not just the lyrics,it's when you put them together and how smoothly they blend together that makes them so iconic
My favorite thing about this song is how it builds with each verse, starting off super pared-down with just one low-key voice and a single guitar with a little percussion. By the end, everyone is just wailing and jamming!!! So cool!
I remeber when this came out. Love just about everthing by them. They were the top band for 5 years in a row beating out the Beatles. If you get the chance give "Eli's Coming" a listen the live version. Their vocals will blow you away.
It was composed by Hoyt Axton- an actor and musician. he was from Oklahoma. He was touring w/ 3 DN at the time. He also wrote, "Joy to the world", also done by 3 DN. :P
“Joy to the World.” Yes, it did bring a lot of joy! I was eight when it came out and it was such a fun song for kids to sing. Both songs are great from start to finish.
Between 1969-1974 no group had more top 10 hits, Sold more Albums, also Sold More Concert tickets than Three Dog Night! Much Love from Oregon, Chuy ☮️🫶🏼🤙🏽👍🏽😎🎼🎸🎤
I always loved the song. Born in OK..Been to England, love the Beatles..When my dad and stepmother moved to Spain..so finally I went there...Las Islas Canarias..las mujeres son bonitas. That's my anthem!
This is another great song from Hoyt Axton, and it's a great cover by Three Dog Night. For me it says that wherever you are is a good place to be, and so are the places you've never been. Life is an adventure to look forward to.
I always thought a “three dog night” meant it was an extra cold night, hence sleeping with three dogs to stay warm. This group is ridiculously talented!
Wife here..These guys were HUGE back in the day.. This is my FAVORITE Three Dog Night song..!!! ..Ms.Asia.., you NAILED the meaning of this.."Heaven on Earth"..Very well stated BJ..Thank you for the insightful and intelligent insight into this song!!!
That reminds me of John Denver’s “Country Roads.” I lived in Virginia for about twenty five years and when he sang “Almost heaven, West Virginia” I would think, “Yeah, because you’re almost to Virginia.” 😁
Three Dog Night is an American-Irish rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. Hope you check out some more of their music. Some other great songs are "One", "Just An Old fashioned Love Song", Eli's Coming", Shambala", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Joy To The World", Try A Little Tenderness", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On" etc.
Per Wikipedia the lyrics consist of the narrator ruminating about overseas locales that he has never visited, but about which he feels he has some proxy experience, primarily via the music but also due to other presumed highlights found there. He loosely compares his own actual travels to these more worldly spots. In the final verse, he observes that while he has "never been to heaven", he has "been to Oklahoma", where he was told he was born, thus implying a kinship between the two places. Hoyt Axton, who was born in Oklahoma, explained that he originally wrote, "...in Oklahoma, born in a coma...." However, it was considered inappropriate; thus, the lyrics were changed to "not Arizona".
I was a roadie back in the day and loved working with these guys. Cory Wells was a huge loss. I always felt he was saying just because haven't been to a certain place doesn't mean that you can't appreciate the culture anyway. If your observant you can enjoy talent and beauty from a place even if you haven't gotten to witness it firsthand.
Elvis did a killer live version of this song. He didn't have as many hits in the 70s but he took songs like this, 'My Way' (written for Frank Sinatra) and others and made them his own live. And the mother of the guy who wrote this song (Hoyt Axton, who really was born in OK) wrote 'Heartbreak Hotel' for Elvis in the 50s. Circle of music life lol.
I was raised in NEEDLES CA. where 120+ temps in summer cause travelers to over heat and Vegas is 120 miles away.. hence they broke down in little town of Needles on their way to Vegas... and this song was very popular in our stage band in the 70's lol
This song has always resonated with me because my father was born and grew up in Oklahoma. I'm from Chicago (my father came here in his early twenties) but we used to go there every year on vacation to stay with my aunt and uncle from the time I was a baby until I turned 18. I have fond memories of that time. I agree you need to do "Eli's Coming" and I also love "An Old Fashioned Love Song".
I remember when this one came out. I was in grammar school and was an instant favorite of mine! I liked it so much. I loved the lyrics, but never gave any real thought to their meaning, to this day up until now. I think you two are spot on. Thanks for doing the brain work for me. 😊
One of the greatest groups for about 8 years. 3 great singers, songwriters, band members, the whole ball of wax. Cory Welles lead killed the cover of Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding. Worth checking out.
One of my favs! You can't go wrong with Three Dog Night! Other folks have mentioned that this was written by Hoyt Axton, who is in the songwriter's hall of fame, but his mother, Mae Axton is also in the hall of fame as well. She wrote a lot of hits in Nashville, including co-writing Elvis's Heartbreak Hotel. Also, I think the Hard Rock Casino in Tulsa has the "I've never been to heaven but I've been to Oklahoma" lyrics still above one of the main doors in the lobby.
This song was written by country star Hoyt Axton. He also wrote their number one song Joy to the World, the NoNo song for Ringo Star, and tunes for Steppinwolf, Elvis Presley, and more...
I love Three Dog Night, ever since I was in Grade School, and I love this song, but you really need to hear Elvis's live performance of it in 1972. It's magnificent!!
Money cant by you REAL Happy ness ; My Youth in the 70s did , My family was close, I lived in Kodiak Alaska By a very pretty lake,I Fished rain bow trout and Doly vardoin often ,The seafood was OUT STANDING. Born in Baer county, San Antonio. We moved to Anchorage Alaska when I was 9 months old. I can relate to the song. Both coast but in Omaha 43 years. You 2 always make me smile when you react to music I've known all my life. Keep it up!

Next up ‘Eli’s Coming’ Got to see three dog night twice in the early 70s, and they were a hot group at a time and did some great songs this is just one of them
3 Dog Nite is good rabbit hole. Great music from them in late 60's and through the 70's: Celebrate, Out in the Country, Just another love song, Mama told me not to come (kind of a whimsical tune). Great harmonies-3 part harmony is what they were known for.
Cory Welles took the lead on this, great singer! What made this group even better was 3 great singers. Cory, Chuck Negron and Danny Hutton. Many great songs,! Very successful late 60s to mud 70s. Cory did a phenomenal job covering Try a little Tenderness by Otis Redding. One of my favorite groups ever
Saw them live in 1978, again in 1991, both times AWESOME! this is the music reminds me of my highschool years, so many great memories, and even after all this time, this music is STILL Great. My children and NOW my grandchildren LOVE this music. I love how ya'll get into all kinds of music.!
Great song by Three Dog Night. Now for more travel on a more dangerous level. Glenn Frey will learn you the meaning of the SMUGGLERS BLUES. This single was made into an episode of Miami Vice during its first season andce exploded in popularity. The same episode was repeated several times and introduced Michael Mann to an audience made for modern tomes in the 198o's. But the video is self-explanatory. Wrapped around a great song watch and learn the lesson of the perilous world of the SMUGGLERS BLUES.
Yea with this old stuff it's more about how talented them bands were and how awesome they sound vocaly and musicaly. It truly was a golden time to be in. Wish everyone could have been there
Three Dog Night was one of the biggest groups of the 70s. They had so many Number 1 songs... and it wasn't the content it was the Vocals. They had 3 very very talented Lead Singers. Their music was all about the vocals, harmonies, bluesy soul sound. They have quite a few LIVE performance videos on YT that you should check out. Their performances are EPIC. They were true performers and singers. Shambala, Eli's Coming, lots of good songs. They are from California.
3 Dog Night has so many great songs. A word of advice. Listen to their studio versions instead of live versions. They tend to get silly live & you'll miss the lyrics & how great the songs really are. " Try A Little Tenderness", "One", "Eli's Comin'". Many, many to choose from! They were my 1st concert. I was so bummed cuz they were sick, stoned, & goofing around. But I loved them anyways. As a teenager, I was in love with Chuck Negron, the one with the great long hair & great mustache.
Went to see these guys twice in concert. They were outstanding live. Don't overthink the song. Just enjoy a great song that will always put a smile on your face.
Exactly "What does it matter" like the lead singer said. There's also a lot of sarcasm here. see Oklahoma or Arizona. I get your postcard reference. I have travelled around the country a bit. I did send postcards back home and saved them. Three Dog Night always a great choice. Have you sampled "Try A Little Tenderness"? They do a great version of Otis classic
As to how they got their name; Aboriginal Australians, in the Australian Outback, explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night". They are from the U.S......the west coast, I think.
Yes! I am from Texas , an this has been on my road trip playlist for many years. Its great diving across the High Plains at sun rise with this playing.
Hi Asia & BJ, Three Dog Night always bring some soulful harmonies to the table & they never disappoint, so please keep on reacting to them!!! I'm here for it!!!
We would listen to Three Dog Night while playing cards at my best friend's (RIP) house and this is one of the songs we stopped and sang along to. It helped that we had tea spiked with Spearmint Schnapps and got loose. LOL
Like a ton of great musicians, Hoyt Axton, who wrote the song, was born in Oklahoma. Being a Texan but spent lots of time for business in OK, It's a pretty great place, for the most part. Kinda like Texas with a short winter, as opposed to 10 days of cold weather.
Elvis Presley covered this song live. Great performance. These guys were the original recording artists. Elvis blew it out of the park with his take on it. Check it out when you can. Great reaction. Take care.
Yes, Eli's Coming, definitely. However, best to stick to the studio version with this one. Another reactor couple did this song not too long ago, and they're in Oklahoma. Watching their faces when that line was sung was priceless.
How about a reaction to the great Tony Bennet on his 96th Birthday. Try "I wanna be around" or "Who can I turn too" or"I left my heart in San Francisco" Happy Birthday Mr. Bennet. No duets please, just Tony
You should do some reactions to the writer of this song, and jarahamia was a bull frog and many more. Hoyt Wayne Axton Axtons mom also wrote for Elvis Presley.✌️❤️🙏🙏
Three dog night one of the best bands of their time! You want to hear something beautiful from them listen to Pieces of April! You will put it on your play list I promise...
Anything TDN! Grew up listening to them. Met Chuck Negron about 6 years ago on a 70's themed cruise. Such a great band! Definitely check out Eli's Coming. One of their best!
Deffo road tripper song. I agree with Oklahoma being like heaven because that's my home. B.J. is right, wherever you were born and raised is your slice of heaven. The place you long for if gone for too long. Great vid brother and sister. Rock on.
Well, if u really want to hear Chuck Negron from the Group, Three dog night, sing his heart out, then u must listen to the song, Easy to be hard. It will blow u away.
You’ve reacted to songs by each of the 3 lead singers, so how about a song where they each take a verse: “Family of Man” or “Celebrate.” You’ll really be able to hear the differences in their voices.
I was able see these guys in person and they were just so smooth and creative back in the day... good to see the younger peeps enjoying the music when music was an event!
I hope 50 years from now you guys are listening to this just like most of us from back in the day..TDN are MONSTER composers and their music will last forever I hope...
You basically had three lead singers in this group. The harmonies are otherworldly. So good!

So cool!

Hoyt Axton ,the songwriter is from Oklahoma ..He wrote ''Joy To The World''' also that they made famous as well ...
To me, thins song is about enjoying where you're at and living in the moment.
woooow to the point FANTASTIC

Anything TDN! Grew up listening to them. Met Chuck Negron about 6 years ago on a 70's themed cruise. Such a great band! Definitely check out Eli's Coming. One of their best!
Another great song as usual from a special time in music. Asia and Bj are awesome. God Bless.
Deffo road tripper song. I agree with Oklahoma being like heaven because that's my home. B.J. is right, wherever you were born and raised is your slice of heaven. The place you long for if gone for too long. Great vid brother and sister. Rock on.
I love everything they do. Great band.
Jeremiah was a bull frog is a fun song of theirs.
Well, if u really want to hear Chuck Negron from the Group, Three dog night, sing his heart out, then u must listen to the song, Easy to be hard. It will blow u away.
Thank you love this song. You all do a great job. Thanks again from Maryland
Elvis had a good take on this song as well.
One of my FAVORITE songs ever!!!
