  • I really, really should have listened to this sooner. I like Hawkwind a lot, it's just I've never seemed to have got round to listening to an album in it's entirety.

    been a hawkwind fan since i was 11, im 56 now and still going to their gigs and still buying everything theyve put out on vinyl, its a very deep and seemingly never ending rabbit hole

    Another shout out for the album Levitation - I think you would enjoy that one. Tim Blake from Gong on keyboards, Ginger Baker (yes that Ginger Baker) on drums and Huw Lloyd-Langton from the original Hawkwind album returns for lots of excellent guitar work

    Reefer Madness and Steppenwolf are Rob Calvert's majestic take on two wonderful classic novels. Read them and it all slots into place. This is such an amazing album bridging the early 70s wall of sound and the punky Quark Strangeness and Time and subsequent Hawklords albums. The wayward genius Mr Calvert(RIP)'s pen was waxing lyrical at this point.

    Give their brand new album "The Future Never Waits" a listen. If you want that spacey, laid back thing, you'll love it. Seriously any band that has been around for 54 years that can make an album that good is truly remarkable.

    The original album had an inner sleeve printed with adverts like the ones from '60s comic books and science fiction magazines - x-ray specs, toy cannons, sea-monkeys and suchlike. They hid names of the band in the adverts like easter eggs in a video game. "Monseur Nik" had an impressive line of conical brassieres for sale.

    Big Hawking fan here, been following them since very early 70's and particularly the free concert put on by Harlow Council in the town park (1973). Also many appearances at the Cambridge Corn Exchange.

    @Jim Newstead Now Jim, Hawkwind were the very, VERY first group I saw in concert. 30th August 1973 @ Truro City Hall. Ironically they played there at the refurbished Hall just the other week. Got all their albums back then throughout the 70's. Brilliant stuff. Something you must listen to is the 1974 album "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters" by Robert Calvert. He was the vocalist for Hawkwind through a lot of the 70's on and off. Little known facts, he co wrote Silver Machine and his vocals were on a Round House recording of Silver Machine that were overdubbed by Lemmy to produce the Silver Machine that we know and love on the single back in 1972.

      tbh this is honestly a Tier 2 album of theirs, most of the previous output was better, subsequent album was better too.

    AHHHH Jim...once again back to my college days (daze). My experience with Hawkwind involves 2 albums both of which I played to death for a while. The first one is The Hall of the Mountain Grill (1974 I believe) and then the release after called Warrior at the Edge of Time! If you are not familiar with either I recommend! They are both more "Space Rock". This album is excellent but not space rock.

    • @clansome
      @clansome ปีที่แล้ว

      Their best 2 albums I think, although most of their early 70's stuff was.

  • @xlerb_again_to_music7908
    @xlerb_again_to_music7908 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great choice, Jim! :)
    And I can report they have some very different, awesome records @ this quality level out there with special mention to Warrior on the Edge of Time and Quark, Strangeness and Charm - think both have been remixed by the prog doyen himself, Steve Wilson. Many many others... Masters of the Universe, more... think they are even still touring.
    Certainly a worthy band to explore; very rewarding!

      David Gilmour did produce The Pretty Things which has a connection to Hawkwind, Dick Taylor produced the debut Hawkwind album and The Pretty Things influenced David Gilmour. Irony!!!

    The title and artwork were inspired by the groundbreaking 1930s magazine Astounding Stories of Super Science.
    This is actually, for me anyway, one of their weakest 70s lps. It’s more ‘sophisticated’ than their earlier lps which isn’t necessarily a good thing as it loses the really manic energy and random squiggly swoops and bleeps. Do Re Mi, Mountain Grill, Warrior on the Edge of Time I personally like much more. Actually though, the next lp Quark Strangeness and Charm gets the balance just right and is fantastic 🤔

      All great albums, me im more of the 80's area. Love their early albums from that era. "Choose your masque", "Church of Hawkwind", "Sonic Attack", "Chronicle of the Black Sword" (Live version especially), and then "Live Seventy Nine" :)

    • @clansome
      @clansome ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would totally agree all 4 that you quote are great although you have to add In Search of Space and the live Space Ritual to the pile. I'm one of those who believes it should be Xin Search of Space as that is on my original United Artist's interlocking cover.

      @@clansomemy fave track of all is Space is Deep, especially when the bass comes in, the acoustics fade and it builds up and up until we have lift off and orbit is attained. That track could go on all day as far as i’m concerned ❤️

    As you say, the classic Hawkwind sound, perhaps the more Krautrocky end of that sound, but not their most exciting or risk-taking album - even the sax and violin sound 'safe' when we know that the players can and would jump off a cliff on other albums. Still good though.

    Good evening Jim,
    Only know one song, silver machine, very well including the live version.
    I very poorly remember seen one full live concert. I mostly remember the bodypainted female danser 😋. (I’m talking about about 45 years ago)
    The Astounding was a (pulp) magazine with short SF stories. Many of the great SF writers started in Astounding. The logo on the album cover is identical to the magazine logo.
    Hawkwind always has been very into SF. And yes, I’m a big SF and Fantasy fan.
    The music isn’t bad at all, very much like it. I wouldn’t listen to more than one album side in one go though.

    Hawkwind, nice. Been one of my fav band (in the rock/electro mix genre) for a long time. I do prefer their 80's stuff like: Choose your masque, Church of Hawkwind, Sonic Attack, Chronicle of the Black Sword (Especially the live album), and the "Live Seventy Nine" is pretty good.
    But i do love their earlier stuff as well, but mostly from live sets later in 80's 90's and songs put in compilation albums later and re-recorded or remixed
