Has someone noticed that the piano cadence and melody in the background at the end of him singing "...makes me dissapear" that keeps going till "in the great below!", is the same we can listen in the chorrus of the song "And all that could have been"???

@@iximusic of course is not a coincidence!! He use to do this a lot... repeting melodies in different songs like some kind of leitmotif.
Since I first heard "and all that could have been" got the feeling that those 2 song were related in more ways than the title (part of the great below lyrics)....when I realized it was moving and inspiring!

Not sure if anyone has chimed in on this yes, but this song carries the sorrowful theme about the loss of his grandmother, who cared for him during much of his life, hence the lines: "all the world has closed her eyes" - obvious metaphor of his grandmother dying and "all of this for you.... spoils of a wasted life...all of this for you" for just one more moment back with her.

This is my favourite track from The Fragile and it's wonderful to see your analysis.
I've always thought of it as a tale of someone contemplating suicide by drowning in the ocean but then moving on.
The "I descend from grace" line is probably one of the most powerful lines I've ever heard and the way he delivers it is amazing. I'm surprised you didn't mention it.

I didn't think such a dark song could be analysed in this fun and accessible a way! It's so nice to see Trent's pre-film score music being taken seriously as the work of a real composer. The soundscapes he makes are so meticulous and evocative: the attention to detail in the instrumentals, the intricate layering of sample over sample over sample. If you ever wanted to, I think you could do a phenomenal analysis of 'La Mer' and 'Adrift & At Peace' together, since he considers them companion pieces. Thank you for all of your fascinating videos and best of luck with your channel.

I love the violins in this song. I feel like they slowly build suspense like in a scary movie. Almost as if they are warning the Listener "Warning! Danger". It all crescendos when he sings that he will take is position in the great below. Then the music turns comforting and easy. Then his lyrics I can still feel you even so far away seems to go give comfort to someone that has lost a loved one. As one does when they are depressed it feels good to dwell in sad music. This is one of those songs. As you noted this song ended the first disc. I always find hope that the second disc starts with The way out is Through. The opening lyric is "All I've undergone I will keep on". He put these songs together on purpose. Suicide and then offers hope. Thanks Trent. Then comes Into the Void and it brings ya right back down. Lol. Roller Coaster.

I read on songmeanings that The Great Below was created by Reznor after the death of his grandmother, whom he was very close to. That explains the sad, haunting, and deep, yet beautiful, hopeful, and surrender type of feeling that this song encompasses.

Hi, great job analyzing the most visceral and powerful song (for me) they've played in a 2000 live show back then. Your channel is the NIN version of Rick Beato, and it's quite addictive. I've been a dedicated fan ever since NIN released the 'march of the pigs' video. I know theory, but I adore the way your content refreshes my memory of what I had forgotten with time, plus also makes me discover much new things for me as well, and that really feels good. Ever since I've binge watched your videos, my love and passion for my all-time favorite artist has been brought back, stronger than ever. Thank you, sincerely.
Something tells me that chatting with you would be great, yet I really don't wanna come in too strong with that, respectfully. I know mixing and production, especially in wild unorthodox ways, so maybe I too could share knowledge as well. Just a wish, no pressure because I'm quite fine just watching your content. Again and again haha
    Fn' having a blast here.
Have a good day from Canada!

It's interesting that even on more keyboard-heavy/less "noisy" NIN songs, hearing parts stripped down to your piano and vocal takes makes it much easier to pick out the intervals and understand what's going on harmonically.

as far as i know, alternating major and minor 3rd is borrowed from blues, where you start in major tonic and then you go to major 4th with flat 7th, which flattens the 3rd of the tonic. ... and you substitute and get non-blues sound in the same harmonic situation

Nice work, now I want to hear a piano/vocals cover version of this song from you 😄. Also the effect you’re mentioning on his voice is probably phasing. It’s a natural effect that feels very unnatural like it’s coming from inside your head or you’re under water. One exemple is when you walk from a speaker to another that plays the same sound on a big PA system, there’s a specific point where the sound is out of phase and it feels like your brain is turning upside down. Never consciously realized Trent used this effect on this song for that « in your head » feeling until you mentioned it and it’s brilliant!

Picture me, 18 year-old goth, newly arrived at the University in Glasgow. My first purchase was the, then brand new, epic album 'The Fragile,' I was blown away. I also had just discovered the epic Glasgow Necropolis (check it out, truly amazing place,) I remember just lying on the hill overlooking the crypts and the city, listening to this on my portable CD player, absolutely entranced...

Of course you mentioned it. To think I worried that you wouldn't. That little element of hope or sweetness. Because if you truly want to write music that rips people's guts out, you have to have a moment where it seems possible to climb out of the hole, and then destroy that hope. It's just beautiful, and awful. Beautifully awful. I couldn't love it any more than I do.

My English was not really good (it's my 3rd language), yet mood created by the music was spot on. I would not say it felt suicidal, more like a wish to dissolve in waves, to let that dark, eternal mass carry me away. Sometimes one doesn't wish for death, but can't live any longer either. And yes, there was still some hope in it too.
So... 1999 then, both the best and the worst (at least so far) year in my life. Now _starring at the sea_ I don't just long for that long lost love (no tragedy, our feelings just were not mutual) and _things that could have been,_ when we were looking at a sunset together, now it's different, because now I know those waves hold some of her ashes, cancer took her several years ago.

I love that you love The Fragile as much as I do. I seem to remember reading that Trent said it was his least favorite album and he didn’t have much to say, thus all the empty spaces and it was put out more to fulfill a contract. It makes me question how much of a fan I am because I love it and find it so colorful. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Check out the live version of this off the DVD. The visuals are stunning; he filmed a figure diving into a pool and reversed it to look as if they were ascending. His live visuals are always compelling. Interesting analysis.
