Of course she did it. The movie never says so definitively, but it strongly suggests it. It is not a mere coincidence that Ambrose and Philip experience the same illness and then Philip finds the poisonous seeds in Rachel's drawer. Rachel is very knowledgeable about plants and herbs (at least in the novel) and would know how dangerous those seeds were - for what other reason would she have them in her drawer? This movie isn't just a dark period piece love story, it is about a women who was trying to break free of being dependent upon a man during a time period where a woman's social and financial status relied pretty exclusively upon the man that she married. She even says as much when she yells at Philip "Why can I not be an independent women making my way in the world as I see fit?"
Neither the movie nor the book suggests that she did it definitively. Yes there are strong hints left to the reader but they are misleading. If you read between the lines you will realised there is always given a reason as to why she might have done what she did. Like the seeds can be explained to her deep interest in gardening. She might be studying them. As readers we are biased towards our lead character as he is the narrator too and we see the world as he sees it. When she died her last words were "Ambrose" which suggests she might as well have been innocent.
Usually I am not a fan of pop sings mixed with period dramas but I will allow this exception. This video is magnificent. I was inspired to buy the DVD.
Rachel could not ride. That is clear in the book. Philip leads her on an old horse called Solomon. She fell on an unsafe new bridge that Philip omitted to warn her about. And it was a pearl collar, not a necklace like that one, that Rachel wore at Christmas and on Philip's birthday.
I love the book, and thought that I had seen all the film versions, but I do not know this one!!! I love the bluebell scene but if that strand of pearls is supposed to be "the pearl collar," please watch the original b and w film with Richard Burton and see the real thing! (Please note, I did NOT say movie!!!)
In the movies, Italians often play Jews, and vice versa. Here we have a British-Jewish woman playing a British-Italian woman, and she's absolutely perfect in the role.
This soundtrack is the spoiler. How inappropriate and contrived. Please use period appropriate music please. This version is not like the book, there is no marriage, kids, etc. in Daphne Dumaurier's novel. And Rachel Weisz is no Olivia DeHavilland.
