    For some reason, this moved something so deep inside me. A man speaking to astronauts 254 miles above him with what most would consider obsolete technology, and them responding so casually; it truly is a microcosm of something really beautiful. Like maybe, in the extreme chaos and hate of the world around us, passion breeds genuine interest, and subsequently love.

    Wow, to an uninitiated person like me that just happened to run to this video, that is totally awesome! But then considering the ISS is only 400km high with no obstacles in between, it's not that unbelievable. My question is how do they know they have a call and from whom that call is? Isn't every amature radio enthusiast in the world trying to contact them, and if yes, why do they even bother to answer?

      I'd like to add, the lesson learned is that for hams wishing to make contact with the ISS, go ahead and program in the ISS uplink (144.490 MHz) and downlink (145.800 MHz) frequency on your rig and store it to memory as a split memory. Do this for your base station and mobile rig. I happened to have my base rig on scan and just happened to pick the ISS up as they flew over and were making contacts.. Like you, I worked them with a vertical antenna and 50w of power.

    • @ornessarhithfaeron3576
      @ornessarhithfaeron3576 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They would get a "cold" only if there were bacteria and viruses up there. So the most they would get is what they already had with them already.

    Is this illegal? Did you have allowance from like NASA? 😂 just wondering

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes, this is legal if you have a ham radio license. Many of the astronauts also have their ham radio license and these are the ones that go on the air in their free time or during scheduled contacts with ham radio stations set up at schools to answer questions for a group of school kids.

    • @richardradzinsky2755
      @richardradzinsky2755 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RadioHamGuy I don't believe ham licensing is applicable to astronauts aboard the ISS.

    • @tylerdean980
      @tylerdean980 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Radzinsky many of them are licensed, you can look it up for yourself. It is not mandatory, but many choose to get the license.

    • @richardradzinsky2755
      @richardradzinsky2755 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tylerdean980 All I am saying is that all of the astronauts have the right to use the communication equipment including frequencies allocated for ham radio use regardless of whether the are licensed.
      The queen of England travels without a passport. She could issue herself a passport but chooses not to.
      The ham licensing is only applicable to terrestrial and in some cases airborne use. Space is owned by no country so no countries licensing matters.
