  • The bulk of my training history, and how mental barriers affected it.
    Article: www.strengtheor...
    Steroids and placebo effect: www.strengtheor...
    Edit: The meet where I broke records and realized I was good at lifting was actually my second meet. The first meet I just showed up and lifted - I found out several months after the fact that I set a few records there too.

    Great video man, really nailed it with the fish pond analogy. I could see the same effects when training in a more hardcore gym. Commercial gyms are crappy usually, luckily we live in a time with all these TH-cam videos to keep connected to what is actually possible. Thanks for making these!

    Just starting working out at the gym with multiple national and international champions in IPF, and I have to say the energy I get from them has given me more results than anything else could. They made me realise how strong you can really get drug free, also not being to strongest guy in the gym is really important mentally for me.
    Went from 190kg-200kg bench and from 122,5kg-130kg OHP simply because I broke the mental barriers thanks to the other lifters at the gym. I didn't have time for "strenght" gains and I didn't chance anything in training, 100% mental gains

    The big pond thing is something that I try to create by watching a lot of footage of guys like Coan, and other top Powerlifters and Strongmen but it would definitely be nice to have a crew around. Great video Greg / Hi Oswald!

    Really enjoying the videos. It's fun to read your articles but sometimes a video is just more practical. This video helped me a lot.

    This is a great video.
    And I believe the applicability of this approach to mental barriers extends far beyond training stress.

    Great video! First vid I've seen from your channel and definitely sub'd. I was expecting that the article 'unleash your superhero' would also be in the description.

    I'm at a 300 squat 240 bench 400 dl right now and i'm 19 and 165lb, 5'6. Lol.

      I checked back at the meet results. It was actually a 365 squat, 285 bench, and 420 deadlift. If you go here www.worldpowerliftingcongress.com/Records/record.htm and click on APF North Carolina Records it'll come up.

    What would you suggest somebody do to overcome the mental barriers, and to become stronger mentally?

    • @strongerbyscience
      @strongerbyscience  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Jonathan Lwowski There's not one single way. The two strategies I've found that work best for most people (depending on the person, because they're basically opposite):
      1) put yourself in positions where you're constantly successful, so you just get used to it. Stay at the edge of your comfort zone so that you're challenging yourself, but never put yourself in a position where you'e fail. The build up confidence by teaching you to always expect success.
      2) never shy away from anything where you may fail, and fail enough that you get comfortable with it, and learn that failure really just isn't that big of a deal. Sort of like a vaccine - inoculate yourself with little failures so you won't be afraid of big failures.

    You said there were no physiological changes just mental. So is it not possible that an altered mental state, or perception, would change something physiologically?

    • @strongerbyscience
      @strongerbyscience  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. But it's not direct one way causation. If this subject interests you, you may like reading about the field of psychoneuroimmunology (how all of this interacts): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoneuroimmunology

    it all works as a whole, mentality and phisiology, both need to be working together to produce results
