Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade' for orchestra and solo violin, composed in 1888.
00:00 1. The Sea and Sinbad's Ship
09:54 2. The Kalendar Prince
22:05 3. The Young Prince and the Young Princess
32:46 4. The Festival at Baghdad
Performed live by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor: Alan Gilbert
The score used in this video is the Eulenberg edition. It is in the public domain, and was downloaded from imslp.org.
While I was preparing for this video, I noticed that the pdf scan was a little messy (after all, it is 12 years old!) so I created a new 'processed' version on Scheherazade's IMSLP page, with much of the white space removed, and systems deskewed. (Just a little biproduct of this video, if you are interested!)
The audio used is from a recording released by the New York Philharmonic to commemorate their 175th anniversary, in 2017. It is still protected by copyright, however reuse has been fully licensed through TH-cam's Content ID system. As such, you may see advertisements on this video, with any revenue going directly and automatically to the copyright holder.

This you, this helps a lot! I like to have the sheet music for music I listen to, so I can easily reference details in parts I enjoy.
The repeated motifs imitate the fury of the waves of the ocean! Hang on! Prepare for a shipwreck! Yikes!
I love how Rimsky-Korsakov repeated the motifs again and again but delivered them in different ways. What a great demonstration of motif manipulation and orchestration.
He's the best orchestrator man, I swear, and up there for best composer.
In terms of expressing themes and bringing them home, experimenting with them in pleasing ways, I've never heard his better.
You could argue Holst, but he's obviously not as thematic; he's the textural/surrealist counterpart to RK perhaps.
Like wagner
That first violin solo practically resolves you to tears in about 10 seconds
Indeed

"Hey! I’m a music student who designs these videos in my little free time to help my studies, and hopefully to help you too." They sure do. Thanks for your effort and for sharing!
Hands down one of the best orchestral works of art ever conceived by mankind.
i miss segerstam's screams but i still wholeheartedly enjoy coming back to this piece after a year :)
It's almost unpalatable without the shouts, (almost). I wish there were some composers who put random aesthetic things like this in their sheet music.
When I think about great melodists in classical music, usually Schubert, Chopin or Dvořák come to my mind. I finally realise that Rimsky-Korsakov also belongs to the masters of melodic articulation and phrasing as he shows us in 00:42 with the solo violin or in 10:36 with the bassoon. I am also impressed by the development of familiar themes throughout the four movements of this masterpiece.
This is in my top 10 pieces of all time!
Maybe thats a bit of an exaggeration - its not that good
@@aldoringo439 Its subjective lol

@@aldoringo439 y mía también, y NO es exagerado y podría ser la primera, porqué no? Por qué tú lo dices?

Fortuneatly in this version the trombone and the tuba doubling is complete (whereas, in the score, the quavers are omitted)
Yeah, I noticed that while listening along. Do you know what that's about? Did Rimsky-Korsakov not intend for them to play it like that, and if so, why do most recordings play it differently

Don't know the eras of any composers, but I hear similarities to Shostakovich, Bizet, Bartók, and Tchaikovsky in those solos
Rimsky-Korsakov was a pioneer of these timbral textural combinations of course having borrowed loads from the greats of that time.
Rimsky-Korsakov was slightly earlier than Shostakovich or Bartok, a similar time to Tchaikovsky. This piece was written in 1888, 18 years before Shostakovich was born in 1906. However, Rimsky was certainly a pioneer and a great teacher (he taught many great composers, Stravinsky and Respighi included) and some of his ideas were ahead of their time.

As far as I can tell, the NY Philharmonic didn't name their soloist in this recording - I can't be certain, but I'd assume it would be their concertmaster, Frank Huang, but this could be wrong - sorry I can't be of more help!
The recording is from a live concert in their 2016-17 season, and there's a little more info about it here if you're interested: nyphil.org/about-us/general-information/newsroom/press-releases/press-release?item=1617/gilbert-kozena-final
