Sicilian Defence, Smith-Morra Gambit Accepted - Standard chess #12

  • I played a standard chess game as black with time controls set at 15 minutes with a 2 second increment. The opening played was the Sicilian Defence, Smith-Morra Gambit Accepted. As is typical with accepting a gambit, black in this case accepts a pawn plus in exchange for accentuating white's development. Black's glaring weakness on d5 is one that can be occupied by multiple white pieces, however white's d4 square is also a soft spot due to the pressure on white's f3 knight. Who can make better use of the central weaknesses, and calculate better through a key tactical sequence?

    I loved this one! I am a super fan of the Smith-Morra. Very cool the way you commented on it. You said many interesting ideas, and you were actually being pretty unusual. Accepting a gambit, going for sacrificies, refusing a Queen exchange :v Excelent game. Thank you very much. I hope we can see more gambits in the future, but still is amaizing how you hold up in positional play, avoiding tactics =)

  • @yrrahyrrah

    Great game. Nice to see you find accurate moves in the opening and the reasoning behind them. When white ran out of natural moves, they didn't really know how to keep the pressure up being a pawn down and finally they crumbled. I really enjoy these longer games the most, if I have the time to watch them.

    Super instructive! That analysis of tactical options on move 14 where you're contemplating bishop takes knight on f3...it's a great example of how a good player thinks during a game. I'll play this on day 1 of my summer chess camp for middle schoolers coming up in July.

    Really enjoyed this particular game and commentary; wonderful to see you get a little "daring" to some level and succeed. My question is, after the analysis, do you think you would have lost the gambit if your opponent hadn't missed some of the moves stock fish showed?

  • @arthurmellinger985

    I wouldn't trust lichess's engine so much. Sometimes it can't evaluate the opening correctly (I noticed he calls 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2 c5 5.dxc5 Na6 inaccurate) or it finds what it thinks are winning lines in drawn endings.

    Nc6 e6 a6 Nf6 Bg4 - the Evans defense - is imo the most solid defense which takes away the possibility for the e5 attack of black - which is usually the backbone of the white attack

    I love your speed chess videos, but these are also very interesting! I think you have, by far, the most accessible commentary I've seen. Many masters are either explaining things on a level that's still well above my level, or they are just far too dry. You always make the games seem interesting and exciting.
    Have you ever considered doing a video with even longer time controls? You had some very interesting calculations in this game, but it felt like 15m was only enough to explore a few positions before the game was close to bullet. I'd love to see your commentary on a 60 or 90m game, where you have the opportunity to really calculate at every stage.

      +Christopher Smith Thanks for the compliment Christopher. Honestly I haven't given much thought at all to a longer time control. 45 minutes is already pushing it for many viewers I imagine. I really want to try and keep it under 1 hour.

    I had an idea for white (with no moves) at 17:39 by trading down the exchange.. then accidentally exited the browser so I have to re-write it. =/
    Bg5 allowing the queen to cover the e4 pawn duty to mobilize the c3 knight, then as you said this allows black to go Nd4. Rxd4, then exd4, doubling up blacks pawns on the e-file and creating a weak pawn for white to scoop up with his 2nd rook eventually or doubling up queen and rook on the E-file for a potential pawn break on the isolated central (pawn island) black D6 pawn.
    After exd4, the white knight is hit, so Nd5 and if F-Nxd5 then Bxe7, and Qxe7, then white bxe5 attacking the b7 square now guarded by the queen on e7 for black.
    Unfortunately however for a second I lost track of pieces and I thought that if Bxe7, Knight can proceed to Nxc3 (a 2nd ghost knight which already moved), then if Bxd8, Nxe2+ .. but actually the white knight already moved :p.
    BUt I guess the threat of Nxe2+ would still make that knight move the best?? so white would have to re-capture bxc3 because the knight would have the pawn on d4 to protect from Rook capture......and now that doesn't look as good, and u give the pawn back.
    Lol!!! I just continued watching the video and you point out the exchange as an option.. I really didn't see that part.

  • @pnachtwey
    @pnachtwey ปีที่แล้ว

    Black avoided a lot of pain and agony by castling early. There are may YT videos where white crushes black but that happen when black wastes time instead of protecting his king. Stockfish will win as black by protecting the king and then just grinding white down with its pawn advantage. I have done a lot of analyzing this opening with Stockfish.

    For Black it turned out that Smith-Mora was abbreviated S-M and we can see why: without Stockfish and with time dropping, White committed the errors in defense and offense as outlined. I'm too much of a Novice to play this and win as Eric did, but yet I think I learned something about the overall concepts of some of the positions that i can actually remember and take with me. Who knows? Down the road I shoulda, coulda, woulda play this Gambit a few times and see what happens. Nice job Eric.

    Why is the dark square bishop the more valuable of the two bishops? I hear that a lot but I'm just now learning about theory and don't know why

    • @nofanfelani6924
      @nofanfelani6924 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      when you play as white, usually dark square bishop is an important piece to attack the black king. on the opposite, light square bishop is more valuable for black because of the same reason. for the example, notice how his attack was started by moving his light square bishop to pin the opponents knight

    • @JoseTorres-tr6od
      @JoseTorres-tr6od 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general the pawn structure decides the good/bad bishops. Often when one side has it's pawns on light squares the other side will have its pawns in dark squares specially if the pawns are fixed.
      The good bishop is the one with the color opposite to your own pawns structure.
      This is because it allows your bishop to reposition within your own structure (on your side of the board) with ease, while often keeping an eye on the opponents pawns in case of any weakness created that allows pawn capture.
      It is good practice to deploy the bad bishop outside of your own pawn structure and not staring directly into a shut unbreakable enemy pawn chain.
      The recognition of the exceptions to this rules is what makes players good.
