Watching Sparks makes me marvel at the sheer genius of acting absolutely psychotic in public for half of a century and getting paid to do it.

Well Grace Jones does the same. But they've the talent to be characters and act out their songs. Anyway, Slagdonna doesn't just PLAY a slag-IS a slag, the biggest one, plus a petty, attention-seeking, narrow-minded, self-absorbed gold-digger-AND SHEALWAYS gets away with it-and WORSE-is defended AND worshipped for it, mainly by those that insist the nasty bitch ISN'T this way! Jesus Christ, the old bastard ain't that good an actor and has never hidden it well, but then as the majority of people are mind-numbingly easy in their ability to be brainwashed and controlled by an evil dictator, that clearly doesn't matter!

This is a good video. In 3.5 mins they created a special vignette with timeless qualities. The horses are wooden, which adds a quirky Sparks touch, but the rest has a sentimental quality, both happy and sad. Implying the happiness of young love. The girl, what a darling with those eyes and smiles. I wonder who she is. Ron hasn't found his special one yet, however he still shows smiles and charm, which itself is touching and endearing. The adventure during the day morphs into a camp under the stars. Ron does a touching dance, and Russell follows with wholesome bravado, and struts some moves, as the haunting synth riff melts away into the stars. They all wave at us. Very poignant. The director captured beautiful facial shots of each of them, a balance of counterpoint - happy and serious. There are some nice extended mixes on youtube. Russell has said that this was written as a more mainstream piece to have wider appeal. I think the way it turned out, it is actually romantic and poignant. Even though the Sparks are known for their quirks and hilarious lyrics, titles and sentiments, Sparks fans know that a romantic thread underpins their work.

    1990 interview by Ira Robbins:
Russell: Another one of our slower tunes. We thought this could have been really successful commercially. It sounds like the type of thing that could get played on the radio, but for whatever reasons it didn’t get played a lot. Even the stations that would support us thought it was too soft-sounding. For once in our career, Ron tried to make a song acceptable for an American mass audience - not being overly clever, trying to make them real palatable. The lyrics aren’t humorous or quirky, but they’re still well written. It had a real nice video, a fantasy western motif with us rocking on two real fake horses. The video went counter to the song’s seriousness.
Ron: We wanted to do a song that had all the irony removed and was just a song song. That was what we came up with. I really like it, but people look for the motive behind it and then we can’t get accepted. People are waiting for the punchline, and there isn’t any.

@@michaelmoratto Yes but most taste is bad (certainly since the 90s and even in the 80s when there was so much brilliance to choose from, most people just picked the shit) and continues to be. Proof why the lousy US didn't go for this, and the UK too. Yet the likes of slagdonna, Wham!, Madness, Weller, Sting, Pill Collins, Minogue, Houston, Tina Turner etc. churn out the same crap to everyone's orgasms. Effing sad and then some.

It's a while since you wrote, but anyway.
Now with the documentary (by Edgar Wright, premiered a few days ago at the virtual Sundance Festival 2021) perhaps that'll change! 😁
I haven't had the chance to watch it yet, but when reading comments and reviews I understand it is as fantastic as we hoped for!! 🤩🤩🤩!
I have seen a large number of people writing that they barely knew about, or never heard of Sparks, being deeply moved, more or less converted to fans just by watching the film.
Edgar Wright compared being a Sparks fan to being a member to a secret society, with a secret "handshake" 😂, but after 80 celebrities confessed their love and admiration, maybe having the infection of the Sparks bug will be a more common thing. And that they FINALLY will have all recognition they so endlessly deserve 💖💖💖💖💖🥰😍
I have a little idea, can't we exchange this Co-shit bug with a Sparks bug??😃
      What a wonderful world! 😁 🤩💞

I have been looking for this video since 1984. I pretty much forgot about my love for Sparks, since I mostly listen to rumba or biguine when I'm not being obsessed with jazz the last three decades or more.
This sounds like a French song, Ron may have wanted to write an American pop hit but its almost pure 1980's French pop musique.
This is one if my all time favourite videos - so camp with such a beautiful song. I love the words - this and Fashion's Love Shadow are the only two ballads I liked in the synth genre.
Glad to see them still playing - and finally getting the respect worldwide they should have

The very first time I had seen this video was in a dance club in Milwaukee back in the early 80's on some random Saturday night, hanging out with my college buddies, getting our weekly drunk-on for that weekend.....it was shown on some big video screen next to the D.J.'s booth by the dance floor, and I was pretty loaded by the time the D.J. rolled this video, and I couldn't get over how goofy that skinny dude with the mustache kept acting in the video. I had never heard of The Sparks before then

Why this was not all over alternative video shows and even MTV is beyond me. It sounds better than a lot of the more popular side of new wave/alternative in 1984. It is surreal seeing it now, as if the fates kept Sparks hidden from me in alternative parallel universe. I feel deprived of past opportunities to enjoy them--but now having seen more of them in 2021, I am making up for lost time. My twin sis and I would have been huge fans had we the gift of more exposure to them at the time! Much love to Sparks!

I know that they practicly never go back to old material, but perhaps as a live version, I wish they could give this song a more serious framework, like they did to 'Ride 'em Cowboy'. To, as with the latter, fit the lyrics better.
Of course it's a question about how you interpret the lyrics. Is it a happy homage, fear to be left alone or an early 'Johnny Delusional'.
I think the melody is so beautiful, but the song can't decide on which side of the emotional scale it stands. Everything is smooth, sweet and gentle, it's flat and plain. It lacks EMOTIONS.
Which I find most annoying when I know that they can (and could) do so much better, without being theatrical.
It took me a while to appreciate this song, trying to make a connection between the words and the performance. But, as I said, the melody is so beautiful and Russell sings so sweet and charming that I couldn't resist. It is a lovely song.
I can't stop thinking on how 'All That' is made. 🤔
A little touch of the feelings in 'All That' and 'Ride 'em Cowboy'.
      My opinions.
I do understand that people love the song as it is. It IS lovely!

    • @camtyto0777
      @camtyto0777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@annabackman3028 i like hearing your perspectives! but if it adds anything, the way i personally interpreted it, i felt it made sense.
lyrically, the first half is a more generic romantic sentiment, and maybe a bit over the top; all righteously willing to fight for and support their partner. (this is all i took away from the song after my first watch; it fits more with the video).
in the second half he reveals his insecurities, that he's worried they'll leave him & that he's not just fighting to protect them, but to keep them together at all.
but, presuming the singer is this macho cowboy type, he doesn't feel he can express that explicitly. so i interpreted lack of noticably moving across an emotional scale (musically) as him trying to smooth over these feelings.
i do still think the video is a bit goofy for being one of the much less humorous sparks songs >_> but, technically it elaborates upon that theorized red herring of "haha what, no i'm not divulging something deeply sad and personal, everything's great here :')"

all the main patches are so harsh and shrill it detracts from the beauty of the song - and the lyrics!!
Russell's pretty much in tune but the harshness of the sounds forces the voice to be sharp to compensate!

01:07 That is what I call an eye-roll!!!🙄
Must have been an idea from R/R, not the director of this video...

No, I hadn't, but took a short look at Google now.

Bit of a roll reversal going on here, Ron looks kind of hot, poor old Russell looks like a poodle. Still sounds great, although the extended version is much better.
