I initially thought Josh Hartnett's acting was pretty weak in this, trying to be a tough guy just didn't come off at all.
Then, it turns out he IS actually supposed to be playing someone who just TRIES to act tough but isn't really, then it all makes sense.
    Very good! Very good indeed!

He is one of the few good things in the whole movie, to the point you think he's good to have something of a character arch after all. And then he dies.

This film was filmed at least partly with Ritchie directing via Zoom cause he was stranded in London, which explains some of the perfunctory elements of it.

Just watched this film. Genuinely surprised how good it was. Had a Michael Mann feel to it. No stupid humour to spoil like like most modern films do. I agree with Kermode on the ending though. A massive build up, and then it just ends! But how else was it going to end to be fair. Its a revenge movie

The dialogue was so contrived. Banter button set to warp speed, in a
totally unrealistic, forced kind of way. The greatest plot flaw for me was that you have some potential mileage out of not knowing the identity of the inside man. Some suspense could’ve been drawn out of that scenario but it was written that he just sits down next to the Stath and confesses. Very lame, very lazy writing.

I found this one to be a genuine surprise as someone who was going in with really low expectations and nothing else to watch at the theater that day. I was expecting another hired-hand project akin to "Aladdin" and while it's still not quite as stylish as Guy usually is, I though it made up for it very well by being surprisingly level-headed. It's not overly dark, had some memorable action scenes and even made all the more engaging by the end by having learned of both sides of the depo and criminals just enough to make that final charge tense. Much like "Raging Fire" as well, they both gave just that little bit extra to keep themselves from being completely boring and expendable with the other potential throw away thrillers this year.

Who'd have thunk Guy Ritchie would be rejuvenated after messing around with a big blue Disney monstrosity. He's in the best form of his career since the early 00s. This is a hard-edge crime thriller that takes no prisoners & delivers some intense action sequences.
Wrath Of Man represents a notable gear shift in
Guy Ritchie's repertoire. He's taking less from Tarantino or Scorsese, this is more of a Michael Mann joint. In fact there's feck all humour or goofing around like usual.
Also Jason Statham gives one of his best performances.

I rather liked this one. I went in with limited expectations, though I am a fan of both Statham and Ritchie, and rooting for them. This was a pleasant surprise for me. Some of the dialog was cringey and awful, but I still liked the movie despite that.

I find the normal Ritchie tone to have gone quite stale, so I did enjoy this more than expected. Although it does have Ritchie nicknames and some other staples, it was very different in tone. Although it's nothing groundbreaking, it did a decent job with tension and worldbuilding, and Statham did sorta seem menacing. The biggest plus was definitely the score and seeing Josh Hartnett on screen again.

I liked it. It's darker than Guy Richie movies usually are. I like how the story takes it's time and makes us wonder what Statham's mission really is (unless you watched the trailer).
Also, Scott Eastwood is GREAT as a villain. He looks so much like his father I'm not entirely convinced Clint didn't just clone himself.

Having watched and enjoyed Guy Ritchie’s films in the past, repeat viewing Lock Stock, Snatch and The Gentlemen, I was pleased to see this one pop up on Amazon yesterday evening and tuned in immediately, despite it being 119 minutes long and already just gone 11.
    How I wish I hadn’t bothered.
It has nothing of his usual pacing, humour or plot characteristics and was a gossamer thin, dreary two hours.
Where in all the mentioned movies, the dialogue fair crackles and there are ample laugh out loud moments, here the script feels like a disaffected student’s half-baked homework assignment that got him thrown out of film school.
Sloppy action sequences, phoned-in performances and Andy Garcia’s stilted cameo offering more proof, were any needed, that he has all the acting skills of a flaccid cabbage.
The best thing about the entire movie was the name of Ritchie’s production company - Toff Guy, which amused me. Oh, and Eddie Marsan bringing out his rhotic r's was a mild highlight for the fractions of a second he was in the movie.
1.5 out of 10 - and that’s being absurdly generous.

The fight in the depot at the end was such a letdown. For a film called "Wrath of Man", I was expecting the finale to just be Statham going into full rage mode and unleashing hell on the robbers with no regard for self-preservation. I thought he was going to take them all out but die in the process. That would've been more satisfying, in my opinion.

@TheBotleyBoy I think the ending could have felt better, but at least the thesis stayed consistent. The ending you're asking for would break the main character, or rather symbol on legs (since there isnt much character development). Hill is not the type to be a loose cannon and self-preservation is his 1st rule. Every punishment is executed swiftly, steadfast, and perfunctorily towards a higher motive. The consequences of violence are carefully weighed for the job... except of course when you must suffer for the moral collateral. He never goes for the money, he just does his job.

I'm not sure what to make of this. I found that this movie just felt flat. As with After Earth and Will Smith, they stripped away Statham's personality and charisma and just had him pull the same stoney face for the whole film. The violence is grounded and brutal and the whole tone is very sombre. This does make sense considering why and what H is trying to achieve, but this is at odds with the initial shoot out from the trailer which drew me in. The nicknames and banter are painful, some of the acting is awful, even Josh Hartnett looks like it's his first movie and can't act. I also don't buy that that much hard cash is floating around on Black Friday. 😂

I agree, it's a pretty pointless movie. Criminal is wronged, kills other criminals who wronged him. So what? It was like someone tried to mash Heat with The Limey and filtered the result through Tarantino. But none of the characters had any depth to them, beyond basic motivation, and the action was less than captivating. Statham CAN do better - some of his scenes in the Transporter movies are indelibly inked onto my retinas. I actually checked the news during the climactic gunfight in this film. Even The Gentleman had Hugh Grant putting out a career-defyingly great performance. I can barely remember anyone's lines in Wrath of Man.

It's not a bad movie at all. though I think Mark's right that it's in no way a challenge for either Ritchie or Statham to turn this sort of movie out as a weekend hobby.
It's not exactly the most intellectually challenging movie you're ever going to watch, and I don't know if the influence of the French original had must to do with this, but there are a few scenes and aspects of the film where if this were the traditional Hollywood cop/heist/revenge thriller things would have been very plainly telegraphed and spoken V E R Y S L O W L Y to make sure the popcorn munchers got it. But they let you figure the majority of it out yourself. It did get a bit "Just in case you weren't playing attention THIS is what's been going on..." toward the end, but this could have been a much worse film if they had taken that "Lowest common denominator" approach that the mainstream movie makers tend to apply.

Jason Statham has four or five acting facial expressions, Roger Moore style. He used only one throughout this whole film. Still entertaining though.

Disappointing overall. Or am I missing a trick being unable to accept that H is bullet proof or go along with the implausible ending?

Every conversation between each character felt unnatural and over staged. What a shame! watched Hummingbird recently and that was good, Stathom’s a T800 in this film

I disagree 100% When this started I was ready for a rather mindless movie and I had time to kill but by the end of it, I honestly had a good time. Watched it again on amazon yesterday and it is even better. This is one of Guy Ritchie's best work.

Utterly humourless and unnecessarily convoluted - I was hoping for a fun, violent Ritchie/Statham mash up, but this was glum and extremely dreary.

I thought it was a good cast; however, the movie left me cold. I got the definite impression that the main role was supposed to be a threatening bogeyman, like John Wick; unfortunately it did land for me. It reminded me more of Layer Cake. For a better armoured car heist movie, I'll recommend "The Money Movers" from 1978.

Mark has become a movie snob and cant abide the fact “perfunctory” = entertainment- not everything has to cerebral.
I have avoided Guy Ritchie like the plague for most of his career, but caught this by accident and it had me grinning throughout.
Yes a by the numbers crime caper, but a VERY accomplished one and i get a bit fed up with being told by critics that that isnt good enough and so equals awful.

Bad things out of the way, so many of the accents were shaky at best and laughable at worst. His kids accent was the worst attempt at RP I’ve ever heard. Even Marsen’s accent, for someone who has such a high pedigree as an actor, was embarrassingly wayward. Perhaps having British people (all local boys he’s worked with before) playing Americans and vice-versa wasn’t the best way to tell this story.
The Actor playing Bullet sounded like he was reading lines off a script, and I’m pretty sure he was for the first 5 minutes of the film (look at the clipboard). Made me laugh out loud how robotic he was.
However the score and Cinematography were highlights, creating a cold, tense atmosphere (violin strikes and quick cuts will do that to you, just ask Hitchcock). Statham always oozes cool-ness with every outing, even if he plays the same character every time. Him and Neeson are becoming very good at that.
    All-in-all: 5 gruff “Yeh’s” out of 10.

Found it a rather unpleasant film to watch.
Needlessly brutal, unlikable characters, bad dialogues…
It seems like it wants to say something about the nature of violence in a macho culture, but it also wants to have Statham to be the badass, violent macho-hero.
    And unpleasant mess.

I've literally just finished watching it 10 minutes ago ... I kind of agree with MK, it felt like more like a drawn out episode of a TV cop show than a big movie ... definitely watchable, but just not memorable.

Couldn’t tell if this movie was homophobic or homoerotic with the gay jokes the characters were doing to each other every 5 seconds. Like we get it, you guys are so straight and cool you would never secretly think about kissing each other all the time. The only thing I took away from this movie is that Guy Ritchie must be going through a mid life crisis and is having some confusing feelings about his sexuality that came out in the script or something 🤷‍♂️

@@KyleAButler Hahaha, give it a go I guess. I turned it off after half an hour because the film was just Jason Statham walking around a police precinct being introduced to 30 different men with nicknames and engaging in homoerotic banter. Like do I need to know all these people?!? They had less characters on Game of Thrones ffs! 😅
