    Cute, and informative, for beginners, I am in college and in an Advanced class. I have been doing this since 2006. And pottery since 1986 at UCI. I am now an Emeritus learner & in slipcasting. still I appreciated your video as it is very informative for beginners.

    I'm also an art teacher that uses the majolica technique with my students. What low fire white base glaze do you use? Amaco used to sell a gallon sized container of low fire white dipping glaze, but they have discontinued it. I have been purchasing white glaze by the pint and watering it down to dipping consistency. I am curious to see if you know of a better product to use in the classroom.

      We use Amaco TP (Teacher’s Palette) glazes on top of the TC (Teacher’s Choice) TC-11 white base glaze- I have a more recent video featuring those, as I no longer use the majolica line, as I couldn't find them anymore! Here is the newer video! th-cam.com/video/FeSSLHTfTDQh/w-d-xo.htmlttps://th-cam.com/video/FeSSLHTfTDQ/w-d-xo.html

    Did you bisque fire the clay before the majolica ? Is that necessary

      I always bisque fire my kids work prior to them glazing unless they do sgraffito with underglaze. Honestly, I’m not sure if you’d have to. I prefer to as there is less chance of gassing off during glaze firing.

    Thank you. What clay body do you like best? Are these items food safe?

      Hi- the materials description of what I used are in the video description. Yep, these glazes are food safe when properly fired! I happen to use Standard 103 without grog for this project with my beginning students because it is easy for them to work with. My personal favorite clay is Laugna Bmix with grog, cone 5. That is what I use for my personal pottery on my Etsy site! :-)

      @@KaransPotsAndGlass If you are using a cone 5 clay and firing it at a low fire range will the clay be fully vitrificated? Is that a concern for the durability of the finished product?

    If the outside surface will be totally covered with the colorful glazes, why do you use the white glaze underneath?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass

      Hi Teresa, you put the white glaze on because that is how majolica is historically done. Google majolica pottery and you’ll see examples what I’m talking about. It has a white tin-based glaze underneath. Also, when we put in the white on first it helps the glazes to be brighter than when it’s on red earth earthenware alone. Of course, you wouldn’t have to put the white base glaze on- you could just do the colors, but I’m trying to teach my kids about the historical nature of majolica as an art form. :)

    If I were to try this on porcelain would I just ignore the white glaze part?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sean- Porcelain is a high fire glaze, and majolica is low fire, so those to in combination don't work. But, you could use something like high fire underglaze on porcelain, bisque the underglaze then clear glaze. More like the technique I show on the sgraffito pots... just minus the carving! :) . Here is the one where I apply the underglaze- but you can be painterly, and do designs of course. th-cam.com/video/f9hzPyewwAY/w-d-xo.html . and, here is the follow up of the sgraffito carving. th-cam.com/video/4Ust2g6Mjhc/w-d-xo.html . Sorry for focus issues, I am remaking both of those!
