  • His Majesty Aliki Chief Yostaro David (b. 1939, 77 years old) narrates the legend of Utamatua, Kapingamarangi Atoll. According to this legend, Utamatua, the founder of Kapingamarangi people, originated from "Tamana" (possibly Tamana Atoll in Kiribati), sailed to "Nukuhetau" (possibly Nukufetau Atoll in Tuvalu) and arrived at Kapingamarangi. Please, please, I entreat you - do furnish this clip with English subtitles. In this wise this most valuable folklore material will be made available for a wide and grateful international audience.

Thank you very much for your interest in our videos! At this moment, we don't have enough monetary resources to do so unfortunately, but hope to do it in the near future. Meanwhile, you can access to this particular legends and others of Kapingamarangi in: Emory, Kenneth (1965). Kapingamarangi: Social and Religious Life of a Polynesian Atoll. Bernice P. He mainly lives on the atoll. If you have an account on FB, there are several groups of the Kapingamarangi people. You can leave your inquiry there and we believe someone can help you.

Dimo polo goe! This is probably the most important legend for Kapingamarangi people. Your grandpa is very knowledgeable and we hope to record more stories from him later this year...
