Me too! I was a surfer who snuck past his Marine Guard to surf Trestles on multiple occasions in the 60's. When LBJ found out about this he said, "I'll get those bastards" and promptly put out the "draft" order, (with no numbers) in 65'. My whole graduating class of 64' (1,500 of us) was taken (along with 100,000 other kids in the first draft), and sent to Vietnam as a cover for his Air America drug running operation inherited from the French. 58,000 of us gave our lives because of this bastard. God rest their souls.
I remember during Vietnam he would address the nation. My dad would say what's this SOB up to now. He would say my fellow Americans I come to you with a heavy heart. I'm sending an additional 50,000 troops to Vietnam. Every night on the daily news we would see all the body bags come home.
He was a f'n liar and a corrupt SOB. He would say he was sending an additional 100 thousand troops to Vietnam and then send "only" 50 thousand. Fifty thousand was what he was going to send all along.

It’s not just his three packs a day; it’s the fact that he had heart problems and doctors told him that smoking would kill him. He also became an alcoholic and started overeating, becoming obese. He wanted to die.
I dont know how my dad did it but he smoked 4-6 packs a day for decades, caught me trying to smoke a cigarette when I was about 4 "just like you Da", then quit smoking cold turkey right after that.
Very good job on most of this. I was in the army 1954 - 1975 and had first hand experience of LBJ as Commander in Chief. I have notes I'm using to write about my army career for my family and this article made me go back and look again at some of the things I wrote about LBJ. This guy was next to evil. Here are just some of those notes: 1st Cav Div. An Khe, Viet Nam Oct 1965-Sep 1966 . The Viet Nam conflict (in my opinion) was like a slow torture process for our military, the bonds of constraint were just now in place and the tightening process would be slow; not enough at first to render hopeless but just enough that keeps it struggling. I know we didn't want to give the North Vietnamese government cause to have China repeat the Korean event but would not it have been better to confront China then than 60 years later? Short term action to protect political parties or people in office is not in the best interests of the nation and that is true today more so than then. Why were we flying F-100s to bomb North Viet Nam targets? The army had artillery and missile batteries with range to keep the Ho Chi Minh trail under constant threat with little risk to pilots or loss of aircraft. Did the Administration or command see use of missiles an escalation that would bring Russian or Chinese missiles into the conflict? If that was the case, could they match the US with quantity and quality without putting their economy at risk? Perhaps President Johnson's position to spend money on social items and not the military made the piece meal, non-escalation policy necessary to avoid political opposition. Maintaining the status quo that would produce a long term failure was the default policy. Sometime I recall pieces of quotes from LBJ such as: "My fellow 'mericans", "My heart is heavy", "We can, we must and we will...", "Let there be no doubt”, "Our 'merican boys". This politician from Texas in only one full term would lead the country into national debt and malaise, a demoralized military, and a broken divided society that would take more than 20 years to change, let alone correct.

Titled " Dereliction of Duty", the- then active duty officer in this work outlines how Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and Pres. Johnson, in conjunction with the Joint Chiefs, expanded the Vietnam War into the greatest disaster of the 1960s and '70s. Both men and the Chiefs boldly lied to the American people, and caused the deaths of more than 58, 600 members of our Armed Services. I received now- Lieutenant General McMaster's book, " Battlegrounds", as a Christmas present. It is a work that will pull You into the General' s brilliant analyses of our country from Vietnam to the present danger. Very much worth reading, it is fascinating. Again, may God Bless You, Sir! Johnson’s biggest blunder was to keep Robert McNamara secretary of defense! McNamara kept telling Johnson that victory in Vietnam was a reality until years later he told Johnson No military victory could be had!
Yeah basically the sole reason he failed. That sole reason not being McNamara but the Democrats as a whole believing in the Destiny. Jimmy Carter peaked that false belief. Democracy and American values are not to be forcefully enforced on other countries. Your take on LBJ is far different than others I’ve heard. I don’t think the man was a virtuous as you make him out. Kennedy was trying to pull out of Viet Nam when LBJ took over and escalated that horrible war. Not only that, you do’t mention the animosity between RFK and Johnson which was actually hateful. I don’t think JFK liked him much either.
JFK was not about to pull out of Vietnam; he even said such a move would result in the whole of East Asia falling to communism during his Ft. Worth speech the day he was killed. Also, check out JFK's talk with Cronkite two months before his death - which was oh so maliciously perverted and cut by Oliver Stone - in which he literally says that he DISAGREES with the people who said the US should withdraw. Rather unusual for a science professor. Thank you. I remember that I was first on the list to be drafted for Vietnam when President Nixon stopped the draft but I was too young to follow much about LBJ.

My younger brother, born Sept. 1953, had a #18 on the draft lottery, in 1972, but was saved by Nixon's elimination of the draft! You must be about the same age! ( I enlisted in the Nat'l Guard at 17 in 1963 & avoided the draft!)
49 years ago today he suffered his last heart attack. At the time I recall it being on the sudden side as not many knew that his heart was really as bad as it was. He quit smoking after his 1955 heart attack but started it again after he left office. May have been karma for causing 58,000 US troops to be killed in Vietnam.

In my opinion, good and evil coexisted within Lyndon Johnson and he was a complicated person. In many ways he was little different from the heads of large companies, not shy to twist arms, but he was a political rather than a business boss. He frequently got his way. Kennedy lacked Johnson's ability to get things done in Congress. His stance on Vietnam was not very different from that of other hard-bitten men who'd been tested in World War II and/or the Cold War. And though he began as a segregationist from Texas, in time he came to believe the racial problems were holding back his native region of the South and extended himself to change things for the better. It is hard to accurately characterize Lyndon Johnson.

LBJ was the most skilled politician to ever do it. He knew how to get things done, that's for sure. The compassion he had for the black community is second to only Lincoln himself. He might have been hard to understand to some people, but the things he was able to accomplish (especially in those days) can not be forgotten. Only a president could have had enough sway to accomplish what he was trying to accomplish. If he didn't push for black rights, it might not have gotten done until well into the 21st century.

The south was still electing tons of democrats up into the 90s. A majority of southern senators were democratic until 1995 I think. The South had started flirting with voting Republican in 1920. Warren G Harding was the first Republican presidential candidate to carry a state of the former Confederacy since Reconstruction. Herbert Hoover Carried Texas, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia in 1928. The Great Depression knocked the wind out of the GOP in the South for the next 20 years. In 1952, Dwight Eisenhower carried a good chunk of the South and did even better in 1956. Looking at the state by state numbers starting in 1952, you kinda realize that Democrats slowly lost a greater and greater share of the White southern vote in each Election between 1952 and 2000. Democrats continued to do well at the state level until 1994. The modern 2 party ideological alignments started taking shape in 1920 when the GOP became the Conservative party in America and then in 1932 when the Democratic party became the more liberal. Until the election of of 2000 both parties had liberal, moderate and conservative wings that kept them centered. I personally think that the two party system is obsolete and honestly unnecessary. I also think that it's pathetic that we live in the most diverse nation on Earth but are stuck with a simple Conservative or Liberal mindset. I'm a liberal who votes 3rd party because I think the 2 party system is owned by international corporations.

I'm probably getting in over my head here, but the way I understand it, terrorism is not as much a reaction to wars, but rather the product of strategic interference and funding from intelligence agencies. Aren't all of these groups CIA-manufactured?

The CIA and the U.S. in general has definitely indirectly and a few times directly supported some of these groups but to say they were CIA manufactured is a little too strong. Still, while the death toll from Vietnam is still probably higher, you could argue that the political and economic ramifications of these wars make it more destabilizing than Vietnam.
One thing I would like to mention here, while LBJ did sign the civil rights act of 1964, it was not what moved the Republicans to get control of the south. In fact the south started becoming more Republican starting in the 1920s and the 1950s as a result of more industry moving further south. Republicans not start getting a dominant force on southern electoral votes until the 1980s and the 1990s and southern congressional seats and not go Republican on average until 1994. Contrary to popular believe there was no southern strategy with Republicans to gain racist voters In the south

The fatal flaw in the FDR New Deal is that it maintained and actually greatly strengthened segregation, in order to keep the southern Democrats in the party. It was inevitable that if you give them red lining of mortgages (thus creating urban ghettoization) in order to get the votes to create Social Security, minimum wages, and the right to form labor unions, you set a time bomb ticking. The Nixon and Reagan forces portrayed rising crime and urban riots as consequences of liberal policies, when in truth they were the consequences of the New Deal and Great Society not really being liberal.
I think history has proven the New Deal was far more effective, lasting set of economic, socio-political policies that while far from perfect, did keep confidence in our political and economic systems going while other nations experimented with fascism or like in the case of UK and France had large far-right fascist movements (Oswell's Blackshirts, "Blueshirts" in France), a monarchp-fascist regime took hold with Franco's Nationalists after winning the Spanish Civil War in 1939. The German-American Bund, KKK,.and Silver Shirts were little more then annoying, fringe groups in 1930's America. The biggest problem with Great Society wasnt it social liberalism or any specific idealogy attached to it, it was that it wasn't well-funded, and therefore, not as effective as Atlee's UK nationalization and "welfare state" post-WWII. When you have tens of millions of dollars being poured into a quagmire in Vietnam instead of funding Medicare, Medicaid, Job Corps, Truth and Lending Act, anti-poverty programs, and CRA and VRA gave African-Americans political.power, the riots of the mid-late 60's were more about lack of economic power, or disparity, issues that can't necessarily be solved so easily with laws, it's more of a deeply-entrenched systemic of issues, concepts LBJ and his admininistration ever really understood. Plus, you had younger segments of urban, poor African-Americans that began to reject MLK's non-violent civil disobedience, believing it was too slow to create change, hypocritical, and some civil-rights activists even by 1962-63, like Stokely Carmichael, had begun to question the logic of getting beat up and assaulted by racist, angry KKK or White Citizens Councils showing up or burning Freedom Marchers buses. They began listening to more radical, easier to digest ideals, doctrines pushed by Malcolm X, and later on, the Black Panthers, who were essentially a far-left, secular, socialist group whose core ideals were mostly borrowed from Malcolm X and European "New Left" radical groups.
He was always looking for acceptance, and love from people. Since we have the advantage of hindsight, we look at his Presidential term much more differently now. '72 was the first election I could vote in. I was raised Republican in Massachusetts. I wasn't going to vote for McGovern. The only question was, would I vote for Nixon. He said he would get us out of Nam. Well, he had four years to do it and didn't. I left the ballot blank.

Yes, he did, but it's fantasy to think he had anything to do with the assassination. Here are two books you should read: "Reclaiming History," by Vincent Bugliosi, and "Oswald's Game," by Jean Davies. If the Bugliosi book is too heavy a dose for you ( it's 1,500 pages long ), then Gerald Posner's "Case Closed" is excellent. Jean Davies' book is one of the most fascinating things I've ever read. Her book is a biography, a psychological biography, really, of Oswald. If you read just her book and still think it was a Johnson conspiracy, I pity you.
Good story there were a few things I found out later if they are true or not am not quite sure but here goes might get some backlash but oh well. The Southern Strategy was a gradual, piecemeal approach to win over disaffected, former white Democratic voters to the GOP and it was never meant to be successful all at once. Overall poor education in context. A lot of folks just don’t know/understand how to go about the process of thinking and evaluating sources of information. It’s a hot mess. I think future generations will look at the 2016-2020 era as a grotesque time. I hope they will. If not, then the US may not be a democracy at that point in time.

I was a surfer who snuck past his Marine Guard to surf Trestles on multiple occasions in the 60's. When LBJ found out about this he said, "I'll get those bastards" and promptly put out the "draft" order, (with no numbers) in 65'. My whole graduating class of 64' (1,500 of us) was taken (along with 100,000 other kids in the first draft), and sent to Vietnam as a cover for his Air America drug running operation inherited from the French. 58,000 of us gave our lives because of this bastard. God rest their souls.
I remember during Vietnam he would address the nation. My dad would say what's this SOB up to now. He would say my fellow Americans I come to you with a heavy heart. I'm sending an additional 50,000 troops to Vietnam. Every night on the daily news we would see all the body bags come home.
The only heavy heart he had was due to the big Texas steak he had for dinner.
During WW2, men joined up without complaint. Sad, by the 60s, men were already becoming feminized. Hard to win wars this way.

It’s not just his three packs a day; it’s the fact that he had heart problems and doctors told him that smoking would kill him. He also became an alcoholic and started overeating, becoming obese. He wanted to die.
My father did. He did quit but the damage was done and he passed five years later, barely able to breathe on his own.
I dont know how my dad did it but he smoked 4-6 packs a day for decades, caught me trying to smoke a cigarette when I was about 4 "just like you Da", then quit smoking cold turkey right after that.

Very good job on most of this. I was in the army 1954 - 1975 and had first hand experience of LBJ as Commander in Chief. I have notes I'm using to write about my army career for my family and this article made me go back and look again at some of the things I wrote about LBJ. This guy was next to evil. I know we didn't want to give the North Vietnamese government cause to have China repeat the Korean event but would not it have been better to confront China then than 60 years later? Short term action to protect political parties or people in office is not in the best interests of the nation and that is true today more so than then. Why were we flying F-100s to bomb North Viet Nam targets? The army had artillery and missile batteries with range to keep the Ho Chi Minh trail under constant threat with little risk to pilots or loss of aircraft. Did the Administration or command see use of missiles an escalation that would bring Russian or Chinese missiles into the conflict? If that was the case, could they match the US with quantity and quality without putting their economy at risk? Perhaps President Johnson's position to spend money on social items and not the military made the piece meal, non-escalation policy necessary to avoid political opposition. Maintaining the status quo that would produce a long term failure was the default policy. Sometime I recall pieces of quotes from LBJ such as: "My fellow 'mericans", "My heart is heavy", "We can, we must and we will...", "Let there be no doubt”, "Our 'merican boys". This politician from Texas in only one full term would lead the country into national debt and malaise, a demoralized military, and a broken divided society that would take more than 20 years to change, let alone correct.

In my opinion, good and evil coexisted within Lyndon Johnson and he was a complicated person. In many ways he was little different from the heads of large companies, not shy to twist arms, but he was a political rather than a business boss. He frequently got his way. Kennedy lacked Johnson's ability to get things done in Congress. His stance on Vietnam was not very different from that of other hard-bitten men who'd been tested in World War II and/or the Cold War. And though he began as a segregationist from Texas, in time he came to believe the racial problems were holding back his native region of the South and extended himself to change things for the better. It is hard to accurately characterize Lyndon Johnson.

Only a president could have had enough sway to accomplish what he was trying to accomplish. If he didn't push for black rights, it might not have gotten done until well into the 21st century.

His actions in the Vietnam War were every bit as bad as Bush and by extension worse then Trump. The Gulf of Tonkin incident was entirely fabricated by the Johnson administration so he could expand the war. Then there was "McNamara's Morons" aka Project 100,000 which was when his administration fudged the minimum requirements for the draft so he could help "solve" poverty while also expanding the Vietnam War by drafting tons of uneducated poor people where they suffered a significantly higher casualty rate then other draftees or volunteers (especially since they disproportionately sent to the frontlines).
We cant know his personal thoughts but a major reason for his obsession with the Vietnam War was likely simple partisan politics. The Republicans were rabidly anti-communist in the 40s, 50s, and 60s to a larger degree then the Democrats (who werent pro communist or anything just not as anti communist). The loss of China to the CCP helped win Eisenhower and the GOP the 1952 election after 20 years of continuous Democrat rule and the GOP won in part thanks to blaming the Democrats for not supporting the Nationalists enough in the Chinese Civil War. When JFK/LBJ won by an extremely narrow margin in 1960 (around 0.2% of the popular vote) he knew he needed to take a strong anti-communist stance and the failure of the Bay of Pigs and the following Cuban Missile Crisis could have tanked his career if he didnt take a strong stance so he invented an excuse to expand the war and make a show of force. That backfired of course and cost his party in 1968 but it probably seemed like a good idea in 1964.

This idea that the CRA and VRA pushed the south right into the Republicans’ arms is completely false.
The South had started flirting with voting Republican in 1920. Warren G Harding was the first Republican presidential candidate to carry a state of the former Confederacy since Reconstruction. Herbert Hoover Carried Texas, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia in 1928.
The Great Depression knocked the wind out of the GOP in the South for the next 20 years. In 1952, Dwight Eisenhower carried a good chunk of the South and did even better in 1956.
Looking at the state by state numbers starting in 1952, you kinda realize that Democrats slowly lost a greater and greater share of the White southern vote in each Election between 1952 and 2000.
Democrats continued to do well at the state level until 1994.
The modern 2 party ideological alignments started taking shape in 1920 when the GOP became the Conservative party in America and then in 1932 when the Democratic party became the more liberal. Until the election of of 2000 both parties had liberal, moderate and conservative wings that kept them centered.
I personally think that the two party system is obsolete and honestly unnecessary. I also think that it's pathetic that we live in the most diverse nation on Earth but are stuck with a simple Conservative or Liberal mindset. I'm a liberal who votes 3rd party because I think the 2 party system is owned by international corporations.

The CIA and the U.S. in general has definitely indirectly and a few times directly supported some of these groups but to say they were CIA manufactured is a little too strong. Still, while the death toll from Vietnam is still probably higher, you could argue that the political and economic ramifications of these wars make it more destabilizing than Vietnam.

One thing I would like to mention here, while LBJ did sign the civil rights act of 1964, it was not what moved the Republicans to get control of the south. In fact the south started becoming more Republican starting in the 1920s and the 1950s as a result of more industry moving further south. Republicans not start getting a dominant force on southern electoral votes until the 1980s and the 1990s and southern congressional seats and not go Republican on average until 1994. The fatal flaw in the FDR New Deal is that it maintained and actually greatly strengthened segregation, in order to keep the southern Democrats in the party. It was inevitable that if you give them red lining of mortgages (thus creating urban ghettoization) in order to get the votes to create Social Security, minimum wages, and the right to form labor unions, you set a time bomb ticking.
The Nixon and Reagan forces portrayed rising crime and urban riots as consequences of liberal policies, when in truth they were the consequences of the New Deal and Great Society not really being liberal.
I think history has proven the New Deal was far more effective, lasting set of economic, socio-political policies that while far from perfect, did keep confidence in our political and economic systems going while other nations experimented with fascism or like in the case of UK and France had large far-right fascist movements (Oswell's Blackshirts, "Blueshirts" in France), a monarchp-fascist regime took hold with Franco's Nationalists after winning the Spanish Civil War in 1939. The German-American Bund, KKK,.and Silver Shirts were little more then annoying, fringe groups in 1930's America.
The biggest problem with Great Society wasnt it social liberalism or any specific idealogy attached to it, it was that it wasn't well-funded, and therefore, not as effective as Atlee's UK nationalization and "welfare state" post-WWII. When you have tens of millions of dollars being poured into a quagmire in Vietnam instead of funding Medicare, Medicaid, Job Corps, Truth and Lending Act, anti-poverty programs, and CRA and VRA gave African-Americans political.power, the riots of the mid-late 60's were more about lack of economic power, or disparity, issues that can't necessarily be solved so easily with laws, it's more of a deeply-entrenched systemic of issues, concepts LBJ and his admininistration ever really understood. Plus, you had younger segments of urban, poor African-Americans that began to reject MLK's non-violent civil disobedience, believing it was too slow to create change, hypocritical, and some civil-rights activists even by 1962-63, like Stokely Carmichael, had begun to question the logic of getting beat up and assaulted by racist, angry KKK or White Citizens Councils showing up or burning Freedom Marchers buses. They began listening to more radical, easier to digest ideals, doctrines pushed by Malcolm X, and later on, the Black Panthers, who were essentially a far-left, secular, socialist group whose core ideals were mostly borrowed from Malcolm X and European "New Left" radical groups.

Yes, he did, but it's fantasy to think he had anything to do with the assassination. Here are two books you should read: "Reclaiming History," by Vincent Bugliosi, and "Oswald's Game," by Jean Davies. If the Bugliosi book is too heavy a dose for you ( it's 1,500 pages long ), then Gerald Posner's "Case Closed" is excellent. Jean Davies' book is one of the most fascinating things I've ever read. Her book is a biography, a psychological biography, really, of Oswald. If you read just her book and still think it was a Johnson conspiracy, I pity you.

The Southern Strategy was a gradual, piecemeal approach to win over disaffected, former white Democratic voters to the GOP and it was never meant to be successful all at once.
