The official Dolce Gusto website recommends descaling at least every 3-4 months.

In today's video we do an unboxing and demonstration for the DOLCE GUSTO GENIO S. We look at how to make coffee with the Dolce Gusto coffee machine Starbucks standard espresso machine. We also take a brief look at the Dolche Gusto coffee machine descaling.

I've just bought mine, and being a lover of milkshake I bought the Nesquik.
According to the little booklet that comes with the machine, it says "Nesquik, the unique cocoa pleasure of hot chocolate Nesquik"
It's a really nice hot bedtime drink.

Use distilled, reverseosmosis, or clean mineral rich mountain water it makes a big difference in taste.Municipal tap water is toxic crap.

The annoying thing I find with the dolce gusto machines is the cheapest ones (£30) don't come with a water setting so you have to guess. All tassimo machines, cheap or expensive have intelibrew auto shut off. A pod machine like the local xs where you have to guess the water you want is pointless. You might as well use a kettle. However, the one you have is pretty expensive.

Thank you for the reply. That does sound annoying. Fortunately ours does have a level which is good.
Which of the coffees do you prefer?

@@thehaydonfamily6513 I didn't mean to say local xs. I meant to say piccolo xs. I have a Tassimo happy which I just bought the other day for hot chocolate, although I have just bought a pack of green tea T discs on Amazon to try. There are a few hot chocolates I would like to try on Dolci gusto though, I might get one soon, or I might stick with tassimo it just depends.

For hot chocolate we really like the look of the velvetiser from hotel Chocolat

I just bought a Dolce Gusto Genio S to sit alongside my tassimo. From a device quality perspective this is not an upgrade. All Tassimo models have intelibrew and with all the DG models you have to set it yourself if you have the option. Secondly, all Tassimo models know how much water is in it and will refuse to start if not enough. The DG just boils dry and sucks air in if it runs out of water. I find the build quality of Tassimo devices superior. However, the hot chocolates on DG are 10x better.

The Dolce Gusto is the best out of all the pod machines for choice. Yes the features are lacking a little compared to the Tassimo but as long as you buy an automatic such as the Genio S plus, mini me or one of the newer touch models you should be fine.
The biggest issue with Tassimo is the proprietary T Discs and the fact there is no compatibles available.
The Nespresso (original) has big issues with temperature and produce luke warm Coffee unless you buy the top end sage machines and the Virtuo machines have the same lack of compatibility as Tassimo.
The Dolce Gusto though has a great selection of compatible pods from most supermarkets including Aldi & Lidl and there is lots of online retailers offering compatible options.
There is all the option of a Nespresso-Dolce Gusto adapter allowing you to use all the Nespresso original (and compatible) pods that are available also. Sure the outlay for the adapter is about £20 but it opens up your Dolce Gusto to the world of Nespresso original but without the issue of Luke warm espresso, add a decent milk frother and you are set for a great world of coffee all from a Dolce Gusto machine.
Here is the adapter for the Piccolo and Genio S & Plus (it fits all 3) and it’s well worth the investment.

I find it very annoying when making a coffee that it just stops as there is not enough water.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I am impressed with your knowledge. I much much prefer this to my Tassimo. The choice is soooooo much better.
