Get them as close to the strings as possible without them being in the way of your playing. Get the 1st string closer than the 6th. That's it. No need to get too technically accurate.
To give you a better idea, the pickup on this guitar is 2.5mm to the bottom of the strings. But it will be different for different guitars. I think the strings on this made the biggest difference. They are D'Addario XS 9-46.
Thank you for the kind comments. I plan to modify some guitars. This one I wanted to keep original, although I have considered upgrading the scratchplate to a black abalone.
