  • Why do we drive on only one side of the road? Why don’t we sing in libraries? Why wear a swimsuit?
For professor of organizational behavior Michele Gelfand, it all comes down to culture. As a cross-cultural psychologist, Gelfand is fascinated by social environments and their effects on human behavior, particularly, how strictly people adhere to social norms.
In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Gelfand joins host and lecturer of strategic communications Matt Abrahams to explain why some cultures are “tight” and “have strict social norms,” while others are “loose,” with “more permissibility of behavior.”

The episode is published on TH-cam much sooner than on the Podcast, so I am sticking to the TH-cam version.

I dont think she is expertise in civilization culture. She mention several issues tha I don't agree. Included regarding from Brazil. First of all people of Brasil has differents culture from North to South social, religion, education, location. They are individualy without groups. Their environment has everything by the origens, heritage and family. In Brazil people are freedon, free mind, carismatic without think in the future because they live the present. They are not patriotic. They are idolatra, passionate for futeboll, artists, Friday etc.. They make justice by hands and don't agree in politics. Even Ásia and África countries. Every muslim country are not similar, even they have the same religion. In África the culture diversification is the key of mind, family religion and environment.

Dr. Gelfand clearly stated more than once that all cultures have elements of both loose and tight . The "norm" is the broader overarching view.
