If I recall, the original purpose of goldfish was to be a fun shaped version of those mini crackers people put in their soups. It has always been a favorite of mine because they have a certain salty-buttery flavor to them other crackers don't. While the cheese flavored ones are iconic, they also tend to gum up and get stuck in your teeth far more, along with being far more noticeable due to its neon orange color.
In other words, the Original might not taste as good on it's own, but isn't intended strictly to be consumed that way, instead falling into the same food "genre" as croutons, saltines, and the like.
