David Alvarez is amazing. He's not given enough credit for how great he is in this film.

Mike's riff is perfect!!! But the script literally diminished the Bernardo character!!!
However the central love story gets completely overshadowed by Ariana DeBose and David Alvarez as Anita and Bernardo

America is one of those songs that brings tears to my eyes every time I hear the orchestral break. I can't explain it, but the energy just hits me without fail.

JUST WOW!!! I wasn't sure if I was going to like a new version, but Spielberg outdid himself, in bringing out the best in these fine, young actors/dancers/singers/musicians. I'm so glad SS took this opportunity so late in his career. He seemed so moved by what had come together. Love these kinds of behind-the-scenes stories.

Somewhere should have been sung by Maria when Tony was dying as in the original movie! The lyrics were done specifically for that moment!
tony kushner the screenwriter actually believed that if maria were to sing somewhere she wouldn’t believe the words coming out of her mouth, which i agree with in the context of her character arc in the film. i think tonight was a much better choice and choked me up just as much.
Tony and Maria did not sing Somewhere in the original Broadway show.
@@gregglaughlin8625 Yeah iirc Spielberg said he was mainly trying to adapt and put his spin on the Broadway show VS remake the original film. Like One Hand One Heart and Cool got placed back in an order similar to the Broadway show + I Feel Pretty is back to after the Rumble. Spielberg did keep similar changes to America that the 1961 did, and Sondheim changed the opening lyrics for the 2021 America like he did with the 1961 version compared to the Broadway show
I thought the change was fine. Re-watch the original movie if you want to see Somewhere sung by Maria!
Wrong--they were not written specifically for that. In the Broadway show, the song is sung offstage to a ballet going on onstage. The 1961 film put it in Maria and Tony's mouths.
