For KU to go from a very, very good coach like Ted Owens to 3 consecutive Naismith Hall of Fame coaches like Larry Brown, Roy Williams, and Bill Self is quite extraordinary. And of course, I’m mostly talking about the more “recent” years of 1983 to 2024. In fact, there’s never been a trifecta of successive coaches like Brown, Williams, and Self at any other blue blood program. Just look at the coaches over the last 40 years at Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, UCLA, Indiana, and UConn. The jury’s still out on Duke. Kentucky, UNC, Indiana, and UCLA all stumbled significantly after each school’s HOF coach left the program. Let’s just hope KU finds another gem whenever Self retires…..hopefully no sooner than 2038. 😉
Everything turned out alright with Carolina & Kansas with regards to Roy leaving Kansas for UNC. Kansas ended up with Bill Self, and the rest is history.
Love Coach Williams-he's a wonderful person. But let's be honest, with all the great teams and players he had in 15 years while at KU, he should've had at least 1 national championship.
True. That 1997 team was probably the best Jayhawk team ever assembled. That loss to Arizona (eventual National Champions that year) was a hard one to swallow.
1997 was great. Raef and Paul were unstoppable. But in my opinion the 2003 team with Nick Collison and Kirk Heinrich was the best Roy Williams team ever. Carmelo Anthony absolutely ripped my heart out.
Roy Williams 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003. 1996, 1997, 1991, 1993, 1995, I mean all these teams were talented enough to win the national championship and none of them did.
Out of Roy’s 15 years at KU, KU was a legit national championship contender probably every year but maybe 2. The 1996-97 team was beyond a doubt the best team in the country and was ranked No. 1 in both major polls every week of the season except one. They were 34-1 heading into the game versus Arizona. Their only loss was to an excellent Missouri team at Missouri by 2 points in OT. They lost by only 3 points to Arizona despite the fact that Jacque Vaughn was playing with the flu and Jerod Haase (our best defender) tried to play with a basically broken wrist. Haase played only 2 minutes I believe. As good as that Arizona team was (eventual champs), KU with a healthy Vaughn and Haase would have won that game and gone onto win the title….no doubt in my mind.
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Kansas Jayhawks Basketball isn't what they are today without Roy Williams. He made us a Powerhouse in the Modern Era of College Basketball. Lol I was 11yrs old last time KU didn't play in the NCAA Tournament. (1989.) Only because we had a 1yr ban cuz Larry Brown bought a plane ticket for one his players Grandma died. We would've made that 89 Tournament as a #4-#2seed.
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Roy Williams got Kansas Jayhawks to the National Title gm in his 3rd season as HC. We just didn't know then we were facing a epic/legendary Duke squad. Lolololol I remember how excited we were when Duke beat that GOAT UNLV team. We thought we had our 2nd Chip in 4yrs LOCKED DOWN. Cuz going into that 91 Title game? "Duke wasn't DUKE yet......" * BTW? Roy & Kansas beat that great UNLV team too the season they won National Championship by 30pts. Unranked Kansas Jayhawks in Preseason 1989 NIT Tournament beat #1UNLV & #2LSU in a 48hr period. LSU had Shaq.
Love Roy but I think UNC & Duke/NIKE bout get hammered by the NCAA. Seriously u watch Roy & CoachK it's like a forced retirement to save their legacys (8 combined National Titles!) Both Roy & K look like they could go another 5-7yrs..
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Idk....maybe. I LOVE Roy too but he was the head coach. Just like Self is ours and that former Adidas rep. We're either gonna lose our 18 FF or 1yr Postseason Ban. I'd rather give up the 18 FF even though we beat that ridiculously LOADED Duke team who's starting5 were all Drafted 1stRd. 7 total players were Drafted off that 2017-18 Duke team. Lol then insane part is 5* Billy Preston never played a sec for Kansas. The minute Self heard "possible issues" on him benched him for season. Not recording a single min played. DeSousa was benched until NCAA cleared him to play. Then DeSousa was playing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament! With Tennessee-Chatt. It's all ridiculous imo. DeSousa was a potential Lottery pick if NCAA didn't F with him. I heard NCAA president that handed Self the 2022 National Championship Trophy has stepped dwn. You do know Arizona literally $tole DeAndre Ayton fr us at last sec. Also I heard Zion was dwn to KU & Duke. (Nike or Adidas.) He took Nike $$$. I personally think CoachK retired cuz Duke is nxt on getting slammed. Think bout it? Decade ago all sudden Duke turns into "UK type" one&done school virtually overnight. To last 5-7yrs? Duke is the now #1 one & done school. Duke been snagging 3-4 tp10 Recruits every season last decade! I think CoachK saw Calipari early success at UK with one & dones. Imo? I think it's hurt Duke more than helped cuz CoachK can actually coach/make In-Game adjustments unlike Calipari. Lol then Sean Miller ten straight seasons had a tp3-tp5 recruiting classes. 0 FFs/3 NCAA misses. Miller CANNOT coach but he's a good analyst. Seen his take b4 2022 NCAA Tournament? He took Kansas. DeAndre & Zion/Marvin Bagley were all over FBI tapes but yet Sean Miller & CoachK CONTINUED to play all 3. While our coach benched Preston and DeSousa immediately. Kind of like Kansas Jayhawks "stopping play on UNC dwn injured player on what was arguably the biggest fastbreak in Self's tenure." Under 1min to go up just 1pt in the National Title gm...... Lol I'm not gonna lie I was like "wtf! Go get that bucket! Get up 3pts!" Cuz UNC actually didn't stop play on almost exact same situation vs Baylor the week b4. Baylor player was dwn same way in a big possession for UNC after blowing 26pt lead.
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT DeSousa played in10gms b4 2018 BigXII Conference Tournament. Then he was a key factor in winning BigXII Conference Tournament & FF run. Yeah we will be back behind UK in all-time wins most likely if they take away all gms DeSousa plyd. But we'll catch them again and UK fans are dumb. "Talking bout firing Calipari." After Loss St. Peters? That's insane. Lol who the F u gonna replace Calipari with? Yes he's not best X's & O's Head Coach but Cal has passion for the gm and he can reel in the tp5 recruiting classes. I mean does UK fans not remember life b4 Cal that decade after their last Natty in 98 b4 Cal? Billy Gillespie? Anyways even if we have give up 12-15wins? We'll catch UK again by 2024. Maybe 23 lol never know with Cal & UK. We did the best thing we could've done b4 they hand dwn our punishment. Won the whole f'ing thing! We good for min. But now Selfs' won #2/Kansas #4? Doesn't "Self #3/Kansas #5" have such a nicer ring to it? I ACTUALLY believe we will win another Natty within nxt 3 Tournaments. (Just laws of average fr all our shattering losses since 04 in NCAA Tournament. Plus no more Roy/CoachK or Wright? Self is literally in a class by himself of current active coaches.)
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT I do get you're point. Maybe in our case? Taking a Postseason ban in 2024 would be best thing. Or 2023. You're right. I'd rather have 16FFs/#1 alltime wins in NCAA history/14 straight Conf Titles streak all still in tack. Yep just sucks cuz like I said I was literally 11yrs old last time KU didn't play in NCAA Tournament. I'll be 45 in June. We are ABSOLUTELY SPOILED as Kansas fans. Lolololol...... Selection Sunday? Been my fav 40mins in sports last +30yrs. But we HAVE TOO MUCH to lose vacating wins/FF. You would THINK Covid-19 cancelled Tournament "punished" KU fans by far the most of any fanbase outside Bay/Day. I truly BELIEVE at worse we make 2020 FF and either KU or Bay wins it all.
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT IDK on Self "knowing." Didn't know about the Duke Thomas thing. 2010/2011? KU should won b2b. (Plus add in fact weak AF FFs in 2010/2011. Butler was in the National Title gm b2b.) 2009-11 Kansas Jayhawks were 2 best teams in Self's tenure imo. Lol we were stupid deep. Our bench off those teams made 2012 National Title gm.
You're a class act Coach! So glad you came back!! Praying the knee surgery goes well!
KU and NC were privileged to have Coach Williams wear their colors. Love you Coach!
We love you coach
That was awesome. 15 great years when Roy was a Jayhawk
I love him he was a great coach
You will always be a Jayhawk, Coach! Welcome back anytime!! You are loved by TRUE fans!!!
Kansas is fortunate to have had such great , class act Coaches. Coach Williams, thank you!
Hard not to like Coach Williams. Awesome he was able to come back.
Love you always Coach Williams! You are one of the greatest.
UNC will always miss and love Roy Williams… a great coach and a great man as well.
Love you coach! RCJH!
I love coach Williams
2022 CHAMPS!!! RCJH KU!!!
LEGEND !!!
Thanks Coach!!!
RCJH, Coach!
Kansas coaching history for mens basketball is an anomaly. Nothing like it out there

love it!!
Aw!! Rock Chalk HCRW!!!
Rock Chalk FOREVER Coach!!!

God misses Roy no offensive to self
Such SWEET IRONY! 3months after this Kansas beats Roy's former team UNC in 2022 National Title game!
Just what a season!
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Kansas Jayhawks Basketball isn't what they are today without Roy Williams.

@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Yeah I was saying "UNLV won the National Title that yr by 30pts." Not Kansas beat them by 30.
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Downtown Terry Brown!
Those early 90s Kansas white jerseys my fav
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Yep I also remember dropping 150pts on Kentucky.
Remember watching it with my Aunt. I was so young.
1984 KU vs.OKLAHOMA Calvin Thompson 40ft.jumper to send into OT
Before the three point rule. Calvin Thompson had a season of those shots. 2 pts each.
Love Roy but I think UNC & Duke/NIKE bout get hammered by the NCAA.
Seriously u watch Roy & CoachK it's like a forced retirement to save their legacys (8 combined National Titles!)
Both Roy & K look like they could go another 5-7yrs..
Droopy I thought we never replace him but coach self is a bit better I think phenomenal records
Yeah Self is now just 1 Championship fr tying Roy (3!)
Even if 2 of Roy's 2005/2009 Chips should ABSOLUTELY be vacated.
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Idk....maybe. I LOVE Roy too but he was the head coach.
Just like Self is ours and that former Adidas rep.
