  • Sometimes the most fun experiences in life are the ones you don't see coming. On July 20th, 2016, Southwest Airlines suffered its largest computer failure in company history, causing over 1,000 cancellations and stranding passengers across the nation. I was traveling from San Antonio, TX to Detroit, MI and spent a couple more hours in Dallas than I had planned on, but I consider myself lucky that I made it out of there. I've never seen so many people packed into one terminal! Ground agents did their best to re-accommodate as many passengers as they could, but everywhere I went people were making plans to bolt for DFW. I stayed in Dallas and made it to Detroit about two hours late, none the worse for wear.
    I hope you enjoy this trip report of an unconventional day in air travel, and if you do, please stay tuned to my channel, drop a like, or subscribe! My return from Detroit was just as eventful, I know you'll enjoy that video ;)

    I was going to Tampa from Rochester, NY on the 21st and I almost didn't make my flight because of the failure... So much for Southwest...

      Thank you, I always appreciate your comments :) this trip was all kinds of crazy, from this debacle to a diversion on the return leg and an unplanned night in Atlanta.

    Woah, sorry about the rough trip, and I just escaped it because my flight route was SAT - STL - PHL on 7/18, two days before

    I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was scheduled to fly out of Kansas City on my birthday and our flight was canceled. It was hectic.

    What was it about low ceilings was so damn fascinating to architects in the 60's? Every airport in that era kept ceilings low, spaces dark? Terrific job on the videos.

    Interesting gate maneuver at DTW--looks like the captain was directed to go one gate over judging from his stopping briefly,then making a left turn,moving a few feet,then slipping into his berth.

    I was flying Dallas to Atlanta the next day (21st). When I heard about this I really wasn't worried at first. (Keep in mind this is my first experience with southwest, never flown them before). I figured that it would smooth out by the morning. When I woke up the next day and checked southwest website and it was still down, I literally shit my pants. My flight was at 6:15 in the morning and when I pulled up to the Airport a line of people was out the door on the drop off area. I really started to get nervous when I saw that. The strangest thing was, there were no personnel at all. No one at the ticket counter, no flight crews just passengers. Fortunately after about 20 min the lines were moving and the staff at Love field did a fantastic job of moving maybe 200-300 passengers in a relatively short amount of time! I escaped tragedy and proceeded on time and had a great trip! I dont know what happened that morning, but everyone did their part and we lucked out lol!

      That's great to hear! As bad as the problems were on the 20th, I can't say Southwest didn't give their best effort trying to sort out the problem. Obviously something like this had never happened to them before.

    You were definitely lucky to get in and out of there. We got stuck at Midway that day and waited all night without any sort of announcement that the systems were down (not sure why they wouldn't acknowledge that), just told to keep waiting. Gave up around midnight, nearest hotel with vacancy was downtown, and had no choice but to find something out of O'Hare late the next day.

    Awesome video. First time I have seen any videos from your channel. I enjoyed this very much! Especially since I live in San Antonio. It was very neat to see that Cessna 172 landing on 12L as you were taking off from San Antonio. It's sad that they're retiring the 300's :( Thanks for the amazing content !

    I was traveling out of Salt Lake City on this same day, headed back to St. Louis via DEN on United. Things were really bad at the Southwest gates in SLC - the line for customer service stretched almost all the way down the concourse. I went to check out the Southwest gates at DEN as well and they were surprisingly empty. Just about every flight on the board was delayed or cancelled, so I expected more chaos. Either way, I really lucked out. Back when I booked the flight, my 2 options were Southwest or United via DEN, and I picked United because of the better schedule.

      You did luck out, my friend. I was almost unable to board my connection in DAL because I hadn't printed any paper boarding passes back at SAT. All I had were electronic passes with a QR code, and their scanners weren't reading those. The line to get paper passes was easily 80 people long, but eventually I got one of those good old-fashioned handwritten tickets from so long ago. Didn't know they still kept those around.

      On my return from Detroit, I was scheduled on a flight to Atlanta that was diverted to Greenville. I spent the night in Atlanta, with a flight the next day to TPA and then SAT. Long story short, after a lot of stress, I ended up flying ATL-HOU-SAT.

    It looks like they turned into the wrong gate at DTW (D21) and they ended up parking at D23. Did they push back or was there enough space to turn?

    • @AmericanAirDFW
      @AmericanAirDFW  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, they did make a mistake parking. There was still enough room to turn and head to D23, but I don't know why they tried 21. Every flight status update I looked at showed D23 as the arrival gate.

      I am hit and miss with SWA for pricing, they are either more expensive than everyone else or a lot cheaper.

    • @jmhobson1
      @jmhobson1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Price hack: Around midnight Eastern time, enter your desired itinerary and refresh the page every few seconds. Sometimes as the prices are recalculated for the new day they'll drop off way more than intended, but only for a couple of minutes, and you'll get a price error if you try to buy them. Now call SWA and have a screenshot of the lower price handy and they'll honor it. It saved me $108 bucks per ticket, and supposedly happens once in awhile, possibly due to the transition to new booking servers. It's worth a try!

    Kinda lousy seat you're in on that 700. But that's just my opinion some people like sitting way in the back.

    • @AmericanAirDFW
      @AmericanAirDFW  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't like it much either. I was the last person on the plane because their computers wouldn't scan my boarding pass. I wouldn't have even had a window seat if the person sitting there wasn't kind enough to trade.

    San Antonio Airport looks as if it's where old MD-83's go to die. Southwest's story as well as Delta's make no sense. How can backup equipment costing 10s of millions fail completely in both cases? That was 1 long takeoff roll, were you getting a little nervous? Did both airlines simply buy the technology, hire IT people to run the system without ever testing the backup?

    • @richardfleer1905
      @richardfleer1905 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In most cases, neither is tested. I was stuck in the same outage going from BOS to MDW. Why do you think the airline would be interested in having things work correctly? They exist solely to make money.

    Dude have you ever heard of Etihad Airways it's the coolest plane that I have never been on
    And have you heard of every airline I like because when I watch the planes sometimes they
    have TV's on the seats Sometimes They don't have TV's on the seats because
    every time I sit in the seat they make my bottom feel soft and make my
    head feel cushy.
