    Wow what a historical treasure those vintage slides are mate! My grandmother emigrated from Vienna, Austria to the U.S. in the late 1930’s and I now have all the slides she took with my grandfather when she went back to Europe in the 1980’s and revisited all the sites she knew as a child. I really want to get them digitally saved so I can share them with my cousins who are all scattered across the globe now.

    "I'm not that old." That cracks me up. I've been a professional photographer for 33 years, shot film until 2002. I still have much of that film, in the form of slides and 2-1/4" and 4x5" transparencies. Film is still around, I know some that still use it. I couldn't wait to go digital, I bought my first digital camera in 2000 and first DSLR in 2001. All that said, I love your reviews, they've been very helpful in learning more about the options for archiving my first dozen years of photography.

    "Obviously, I don't own any slides; I'm not that old." Ouch! My Epson V550 Photo scanner has been busy converting a small portion of many years of travel / family slides, negatives, and prints. Although the quality is quite good, it is slow. Life is a trade-off. Notwithstanding the age comment, I thoroughly enjoy your presentations. Stay safe and well.

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Bob, Using a flatbed scanner is very slow, the nice part about the PowerslideX is you can leave it alone to scan the slides and by the looks of the few slides I have scanned it has done a really nice job. Sorry about age comment, its the British Sense of Humour 🤪

    Great reviews of the PowerSlide X scanner, but now a little out-of-date. Have you had a chance to look at the newer PowerSlide X Plus? (I haven't found a single review of this newer model.) Other than the increased scanning speed (over that of the PowerSlide X), do you know what specific improvements might have been made on "Plus" model? Has the newer model addressed user complaints about slides jamming during batch scanning? Why should a potential user pay $500 more for the PowerSlide X Plus?
    Thanks

    After testing a few things, it turns out that it is critical to use a USB 2.0 port instead of a USB 3.0 or 3.1. For some reason the scans just quit scanning after a minute or so, but when I switched to a different usb port it fixed the issue. Also, the faster your computers cpu, the better. The after scan processing takes about 30% of the cpu and that's on a 4 core 8 thread machine (core i5 9300h at 4GHz).

    A more technical comparison on line shows that the resolution of this scanner compared to an Epson V700 is about the same, with contrast favoring the Epson. This means that the fantastic claim of 10,000 dpi resolution is in fact a major misrepresentation as the Epson, on its best day, get to about 2,850 dpi. This consistent with the fact that the very best 35mm scanners from Nikon and Minolta reached 5,000 and 5,400 dpi respectively and at a significantly higher price. It is just my opinion, but I think that when considering a purchase of a scanner like this, you should seriously down-rate scanners where the maker just plain lies about its performance.

    Any automatic 35 mm slides scanner that requires the user to place the slides one by one in a slotted rack is a very bad purchase, when it is at that price point!
    Imagine if you bought a laser printer and had to put each page of blank paper one by one in a paper holder tray that is able to only hold 50 pages because the holder is "slotted" to accept only 1 single page of paper per slot.
    For 1300$ (the current amazon price) I expect to have a scanner with a slides holding rack that is able to hold and auto-scan a solid 200 slides ***WITHOUT*** needing to "slot them" in the holder. Just put them all one behind the other, push a little something to hold them in place, put the holder in the machine, push a button and there it goes.
    Sure the slides manipulation machinery would need to be more precise and more complex. So what it's a dang 1300 high volume high end machine not a 99.95$ Walmart thingy for when you have only a few slides! I'm talking about scanning 75000 slides, not 250!
    Requiring slotting slides one per one is a stupidly slow way to setup a digitizing task.
    If you have a "REAL MEN"(TM)'s batch slides scanner in mind, then please let us know!
