Baltic MR-01: Worth the Hype? Did a Microbrand Perfect the Dress Watch?

  • A Discussion around Baltic Watches and their most recent release of the MR-01. A watch that many are saying is a standout and a fresh look at how the dress watch is envisioned. In order to understand the success of their new release, we can study the Aquascaphe and make sense of how the brands design language and approach has been formed over time. Both watches manage to show us that good design is about looking at the details and that using less brings an idea forward much more effectively.

    I do really enjoy the aesthetic of my salmon dial MR01 on a chocolate brown gator strap. The movement is a little noisy though but I’m aware of what it is and temper my expectations of it accordingly. Loved my blue Aquascaphe as well before it was replaced by a BB58. Baltic is going places, their customer support is brilliant and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

      I'm definitely going to try and slip my name down for a salmon dial (if they ever manage to meet the demand) But it's great to hear that you're enjoying it Benjamin and thank you for the feedback brother!

    Thank you for such a thoughtful and insightful review as always! This is a brand that has recently come into my periphery and the first half of the last century is definitely my favorite era regarding watch designs. There’s just something authentic and alluring that always attracts me to watches of this period and watches that carefully and tastefully draw upon that inspiration. Well done!!

    Great show and you provided a very cogent and insightful design discussion and critique as always. You being on cam is spot on (right down to the humor/research). As to the Baltic, I do love the numerals and can completely agree on most of your points, but I’m a fluted DJ41 kind of guy, so find these 36mm Baltics a bit twee, but you helped me appreciate it. How delightful to watch YT watch content that is actually about watches!

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot as always Dave, I really appreciate everything you've said. It's great to have content about watches, right? I was worried that the "Me" part would take up too much of the presentation, so it's been a learning process making it feel more about the watch and less about the person (still don't know if I've gotten it right yet) And these Baltics are really impressive. They wouldn't hold up next to your treasured fluted DJ, but in that sub-1k category with so many cool elements going for it, ah, they're a treat!

    This is a watch I'd wear to a wedding...a fancy dinner...and a Sunday afternoon barbeque. Great-looking dial, and the slightly beefier lugs really does it for me (not too keen with ultra thin lugs on a dress watch).

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm hoping, hoping to get one in hand one day soon and give it a proper review. But it does ride that line of Casual and Dress well! Maybe it's because of the beefier bezel and lugs that tone it down a bit more? Great point brother!

    The MR01 also reminds me of the VC Americain and it just gives me a peace when i see it, is like a rugged, peaceful, yet classic dress piece at a nice price, especially for us who, sadly, don’t go to many dressy events often, yet it could make even going to the store a dress event when worn. It’s just beautiful

    The MR01 is a gorgeous piece and I appreciate that, while the seven-thirty subdial does at first glance break the symmetry, they did apparently pay attention to how it interacts with the 6 and 9 numerals. Very commendable attention to detail, and also means it avoids aping that Patek too closely, and instead taking the inspiration and doing something a bit different with it, and bringing a classic design into the present day. Excellent video! Subbed.

    An outstanding review regarding Baltic's major watches. I need to pay more attention to this brand. The fact that you remain unwilling to modify the design - excepting design-house names - speaks well to their approach. I must say, the MR-01 is gorgeous. Any thoughts on whether Baltic should evolve it to a sports piece with lime in all the right places and possible different numerals?
    By the way, maybe you should spice the channel up by reviewing Scotch and Whiskey.
    Keep educating and entertaining us sir.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Does speak volumes that whatever I do to the designs, there's not much I can add. So great seeing a brand pay that kind of attention to their products! And the evolution of sport models from them. It looks like their motto is "vintage inspired watches" so it's anyones guess where they could go with them ;) What's funny Reed? I had a whole segment I wanted to start (before the face reveal) that you've just reminded me about! Something I'll definitely add in future videos with a bit of a watch / whisky review twist ;)

    I'm a fan love the design. been looking for a dressier piece that won't break the bank to go along with my BB58. blue & IWC pilot 36. The movement accuracy seems to be getting a lot of stick at the price point when Seiko are knocking out models with a 6r35 with similar variations for double the money. I think it's more the country of origin than the accuracy that putts people off🤷🏻‍♂️.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for this Paul, I didn't know that many had reservations around the price v movement. But then, me and my superficiality, the aesthetics are what always wins my heart ;) It's always the case when these brands are introducing new models that they dip around with prices etc and maybe as these become more successful so we'll see changes? What a cool addition this would be next to your BB58 and IWC though... very, very tempting!

    • @paulrichardson2247
      @paulrichardson2247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ID-Guy Thanks 100% agree while a nice movement is a bonus. It's aesthetics that draws me to a watch every time. Micro brands have to tread a fine line, if they'd sourced a Swiss made micro rotor they'd likely be charging double the money or more and people would be throwing up alternatives from more established brands at that price point. In my view they've nailed it with design and finish at an affordable price.

    • @mannyfernandez1713
      @mannyfernandez1713 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plus if it is a dressy piece, that you’ll use once in a while, for three days at most, accuracy is not a big issue, as long as it’s not loosing/gaining an outrageous amount of minutes it’ll be fine. Hope you can get it, plus envy your collection dude

    Very interesting IDGuy. Baltic as a brand has been circling my radar for a while but so far has not been on it. I've seen a few reviews of the Aquascaphe that have been interesting but I'm not sure I need another dive watch. Once I'd seen the Longines Sector dial 3 hand with the small seconds at six just worked for me. If I recall you may have made a video about it. The sector versions by Baltic are new to me and are definitely worth a look and maybe a purchase at some point. The MR-01 is definitely a bit 'out there' in its design language but again in a Picasso sort of way it just works, I had the same view on the Bigeye and my feelings changed from meh to I would really like one. Hey Mr. IDGuy! Great video as always. One of the best if not THE best watch channel out there in my opinion. Now I really like Baltic and their design and quality for the price point in general. This new release im not so sure. Maybe a bit pricey and from the pictures ivé seen numerals on the dial and the small second feels too big and spacing between each number is too small. I felt this the minute I saw the release and for me it just became more evident when you compare with the Patek in this video.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point around this. Maybe it's just me who's more of a "bigger is better" fan when it comes to Breguet numerals. I'm really hoping to get hands-on with one for a review when the next batch is brought through. From what I've been seeing from reviews etc. those larger numerals and hands are what is keeping the dial from looking "vacant" if you know what I mean? But maybe that's all down to how the watch plays in different lights too. Really hope to bring more to this talk if one arrives in my lap one day soon but thank you for bringing up these points, Waingro! Especially about the spacing between the numerals (I never looked at it that way) ;)

    for a little more i’d advise to check out the doxa sub200, black dial. Got one out of curiosity but it really grew on me. The BOR bracelet, minimal font and dial layout, not minute markers on the bezel, running +2 a day (lucky Sellita?), cheap clasp (reminds me of my 5513), the dome sapphire is amazing- it’s a different character on every angle, in a good and legible way, it’s speedmaster case! And hey it’s a Doxa.

    The MR01 is a 9/10 for me. In my view it could use slightly smaller numbers, a smaller small seconds, and two round indices at the 7 and 8 markers to provide better balance. I think the balance is a bit off otherwise.

I have actively been looking for a dress watch with Breguet numerals and this comes close, though I can’t get past the contrast with the blocky logo font and letter spacing. I bought this watch with the silver dial. I thought it was beautiful and elegant in the photos. However, when I received it I was far less impressed. The whole composition was very flat. That bezel was very wide and I was expecting a high domed crystal, but it was really more of boxed crystal, which just added to the flat feel of the watch. As you mentioned, IDGuy, the lugs are kinda wide, and the numerals are kinda big. All in all I did not like it very much in person, so I sold it. I also should mention that the micorotor was noticeably audible in a quiet room. I don't know if that is true of all microrotor watches, but it is quite a bit louder than my 2824 automatic.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the feedback on the piece Joel! I've been seeing that they do present as very "flat" in profile (because of the the bezel) - silver on silver is always a dangerous combo too. @@ID-Guy It could be that the silver dial reads more flat than the others. This watch just stood out to me as one of those great watches on paper but but not in person. Or as the great Yogi Berra once said "In theory there is no difference between theory and practice - in practice there is."

      After thinking about it a little more I wanted to add a disclaimer. I have very little experience with vintage watches and hesalite crystals. In my mind the watch was refined and curvaceous. It had a much flatter feel and much more masculine feel. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not what I was looking for. Also I don't have a lot of experience with lower grade movements, and this one might be very on par with typical rotor noise from a Seiko or something. All I have to compare it to is a 2824 and 2892
