@@rigovalentine English major here. The thing that helped me the most with writing, in a general sense, was reading. Understanding common uses of rhetorical structure, how to incorporate them effortlessly, and overall creating a better flow all came from that. In terms of making them longer, it's going to depend on what the thesis is / topic of your essay. I suggest following a detailed outline, incorporating research information and personal knowledge into all of your paragraphs. Some topics are more difficult to write about compared to others depending on how detailed they are. One thing that helped me when I was writing a psychology essay was to expand my thesis. If you are finding it difficult to create enough points in your essay, expand the thesis to a more broad topic/statement. For example, if you have an essay on Hamlet, and your thesis directly relates to his soliloquies, maybe expand that thesis to encompass the soliloquies as well as other pieces of the story that relate to the overall purpose, or, if you don't have one, create an entirely new purpose. If your essay is very restrictive, I suggest rigorously outlining everything, thinking outside the box in terms of what you can utilize, and expanding your vocabulary in order to better articulate what you are trying to say. Your paragraphs will sound a lot more appealing to your teacher/professor. TL;DR: Expand your thesis to a more broad topic, still including its original purpose. Rigorously outline how you want to write the essay and incorporate a balance of research and personal knowledge (make sure to reference everything). Read books and other essays regularly in order to pick up techniques. You won't even realize as you naturally begin to use more rhetorical structures when you write. Lastly, if you're going to be doing a lot of reading, be sure to pick things that you are interested in. There is not point in reading if it is not something you are interested in or passionate about. Most people in that case end up skim-reading and not retaining any information or knowledge that they may have gathered otherwise. Good luck!
