    Love fatwood as firestarter.

    I have yet to find such rich fatwood in the recovering forests here in the northeast. I haven't looked exhaustively though, but it seems that in general for readily available fires in wet weather here, dry rot wood might be more available. I'll have to play around more I guess. Great editing here, and positive vibes are a good indication of what all the time in nature can elicit. Keep up the fine work, you guys are tops!
    Edit: I was considering how we have an abundance of dying birch here, its bark is highly flammable and we typically start our wood stove with it. While not as dense as fatwood, I suspect with decent processing ot may well be a good wet weather starter. I'll have to give it a go on a windy/rainy day and see if it can be a decent spark accepting substitute for fatwood (or perhaps in tandom with small shavings of what fatwood can be located, even if less saturated with resin).

      Yeah it's consistently great. I don't know why this channel hasn't got 100x the number of subscribers.

    Why do you use the edge of your knife, instead of a 90° edge on the back of a knife?

    • @wildernessstrong6131
      @wildernessstrong6131  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We actually do both. Many knives have a sharp enough spine for throwing nice spark onto the tinder and we frequently do that with tinders that are more flammable, but the knife used in a few of our videos does not have a suitable spine for striking, but the blade on this knife is incredible. We’ve used it for 60 years for this exact purpose and it rarely dulls but we also keep a small sharpening stone handy which quickly makes it sharp enough for any cutting task. But even that stone is rarely needed.
      We use a couple techniques for fire steels, and one of them (in the top tinder fire video) involves a charring method which is meant for stubborn tinders that won't ignite by throwing sparks down from above. These tinders can still be lit by using this specific charring technique and that technique involves quite a bit of control, finesse, and practice. Using the blade on this particular knife gives us that reliable control and good degree of spark, but if someone can achieve the same control and spark using the spine of a knife that's great too. We've just never come across a knife spine that can achieve the same control and steadiness as our old classic blade/striker. But to each their own...I'm sure there are some knives with spines that can produce the same results and control.
