  • Located on the shores of Moyie Lake, the town of Moyie BC was once famous for the huge St. Eugene Mine, which can still be seen from the highway.
In the 1890s a valuable deposit of Lead and Silver ore was discovered on the slopes above the south end of the lake. Soon a mine and not long after a town was established at this location. The ore was discovered by a native fellow, who was encouraged to search for this type of material by a local Catholic Priest (from the St. Eugene Mission - hence the mine's name). The claims here were staked by and were owned by the church for a short time before the property was sold to a mining syndicate under the name St. Eugene Consolidated Mining Company Limited. Later the giant Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Cominco - now called Teck) bought the property.

A stop at the Moyie museum is a good place to learn the history of the mine and town. Summer hours are posted or ask at the store. Jessie is often at the museum when it is open and is an excellent source of knowledge if you are lucky enough to connect with him.

It was such a random stop - I saw it driving by and had no idea was it was! Was happy that I was able to dig up some history on it. As much as I like exploring random remains, it's that much more fascinating if you can learn a little about where they came from!

A wonderful stop, even if there isn't much left to see. I'm guilty of only passing through Moyie en route to elsewhere, and despite how lovely the lake is haven't yet stopped to explore.

I have a house on the other side of this lake, I ride my quad over and up further that mountain and there is a ton of only mining stuff up there. Thousands of never ending mine shafts still carts in the mines. Many old artifacts like pic axes food cans and clothing. It’s very cool spot!

I have been searching for a year now at least once a week for an entrance. Do you have any recollection as too what stope there is an entrance near? All I have found is a breather, straight down drop more than 100ft

No offense, but the fact there are no signs such as ``no trespassing`` or ``private property``, doesnt meant its a free invitation. However, I love doing this too, as long as Im not trespassing.

This obviously depends on the area, but according to BC Law:
Enclosed land is defined as: Surrounded by a lawful fence defined under the Trespass Act; surrounded by a lawful fence and a natural boundary or by a natural boundary alone; or
posted with signs prohibiting trespass according to the Act.
Without these criteria anyone entering would not legally be considered as trespassing. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't still be respectful of the land and it's owners wishes.
