    A lot of people don't understand that you do this not just to impress other people. You do it because it takes discipline, almost always improves your career, your choices and the amount of respect you command. People see the effort you put into your presentation and it is the effort that people respect and it builds your self-respect.

      It depends, they sure wouldnt be able to tell if you spent 1k 10k or 100k for it and will be able to make guesses only based on your salary and whether it says "Rolex" on it. But if you are wearing either some extraordinary watches like Perrelet Turbine or moon phase watches they will notice even if they think you "spent good chunk of money on them, like 500 or even 1k"

    • @charlesstratford1612
      @charlesstratford1612 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, this is a true statement but then again those who do notice the nice watch gets you into 'that club' so to speak where the watch is the password. Also, those who don't recognize a fine watch are the same people who do not know a fine bottle of wine or do not appreciate a fine pair of shoes etc. You know, birds of a feather tend to stick with what is comfortable for them and would likely not be found following these videos either. I am trying not to sound pompous by the by

      That’s why there are so many middle class people who are deeply in debt up to their eyeballs just to live in McMansions, drive German luxury cars; such as, Audi, BMW, Mercedes; wear designer brand clothings and Rolex watches, and send their children to Ivy League universities. A truly wealthy person can instantly recognize a fake rich from a mile away.

    I see all these people complaining about how superficial and shallow one must be to care about these society-made status symbols, and I feel the same way myself. However, that doesn't change that +200k people have clicked on this video with an interest in the subject, so even though people want to get rid of this system, it just lies in many people's nature to see themselves relative to those around them. You can hate on this as much as you want, but it won't change the fact that stereotyping, social value, and a competitive world perception is a part of human nature in one way or another. I personally think that the ultimate status to reach, is the personal status where you are happy and just don't care about other people's judging opinions. Still that doesn't change that as long as you view yourself and your self worth relative to others around you, the social hierarchy will exist.

    *Having a strong conviction* is a definite status symbol, and demonstrates confidence. But in this culture of *social justice* and *constantly offended* that we have in the *world* , how in the *world* can a man *openly expresses* his convictions without getting his *livelihood* threatened?
    Hell, even his own belief in himself can be taken as *misogynistic* these days.

    • @darkzerk7
      @darkzerk7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The answer is, you can't. It's sad but true. If your strong conviction is politically incorrect, you simply cannot demonstrate it or you could not only lose your livelihood, it could open you to physical attacks or legal trouble.

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a quote about being able to entertain two ideas at the same time, you know.... Either way, a strong conviction can be held at the deepest level, but you lack self-control if you cannot avoid expressing them outwardly.

    • @jessstuart7495
      @jessstuart7495 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most people do not have the self restraint to distinguish between an idea and the person saying it. It's like they never learned that you can disagree with someone and still get along with them.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having a strong conviction means beeing close-minded. Saying "I am convicted that..." in other words means "I don't want to confront my opinion with reality". In some parts of USA might be in to be a Christian fanatic, but in Europe that would instantly disqualify from civilized society. There's a big difference between personal belief and strong conviction. ISIS guys have strong conviction, yet their social status equals to pigshit.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Flinch I don't know about authoritative definitions of conviction and faith. From my perspective, conviction is just a poor excuse of lack of thinking. Certainly one can not "proove" 2+2=4 by conviction. It is defined by axioms of Abelian group of Natural numbers. Anyone can choose to agree with them or not (i.e. with reasoning that quantity can not be separated from quality). There are algebraic groups where "4" is not defined. Rational beliefs are adjusted with experience, but convicted believers - these guys just don't want to hear about theory of groups, they just chose to be ignorant, so I see conviction as a vice, not a virtue. Perharps the better word here would be "devotion", i.e. to devote one's life to family, traveling, studies, service, sport, art, fight...

  • @deadbutmoving

    I used to think these things were shallow and useless. But after 30 years of life experience I'm beginning to appreciate what this is about.
    First impressions are very important. Not because we want to impress people who are shallow, nor because we value such people. But because we live in a world where not everyone you meet for the first time is gonna know who you are and what you are about. People who don't know you are gonna judge you by the most shallow methods, that's human nature.
    Having style and trying to establish status symbols is not about impressing people you already know, its about making your life more convenient when you are around people you don't know.
    I have no doubt that if I spend some time with someone, I can impress them and show them that I am an interesting and intelligent person, worth their time and effort. But that's where the problem starts and ends. If you don't have good first impressions, you will never get that opportunity to begin with.

I don't like the way our world works, but it's completely useless to fight against it. It's not something we can revolutionize or 'do away with'. It just doesn't work like that. While it is true that society has become materialistic, that does not mean it is an excuse to let yourself go as a way to "rebel" against it. People will look more favorably upon a well dressed man than a sloppily dressed man.

      The essence of what you are saying is correct. Materialism can be taken to extremes of course.
      But it is incumbent on a man to look good, Dress well , keep him-self clean, smelling nice, look after his skin and hair, exercise, be good mannered, kind and charitable.. That is all that women look for, and if he keeps up those high standards she will do the same for him... It is all very basic ... And most of all, as my Jewish mother would always say < You may not marry the one you love, but love the one you marry , and you will have a long happy life together > ( and without the drama that can lead to all kinds of problems that can make one poor )

    • @generalaccount6531
      @generalaccount6531 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This video is meant to guide people who appreciate a somewhat materialistic lifestyle. No one forces you to live and behave this way. This is neither a monopolistic nor a dominant way of living that everyone on earth follows. Saying that "this is what life is now" is simply ridiculous. A materialistic lifestyle has certainly been there for the last thousands of year and was not just invented in the late 2010s by some conspicuous business moguls.
      Videos for all kind of lifestyles could easily be found available on youtube, whether it's religious, athletic, artistic, solitudinous or adventurous. You can search for one that suits your preference and worldview. You live your life and others live theirs. There's reason to get sad at all my friend.
      Unless you are upset because your way of living is not the one that everybody follows, which I hope is not a case.

    • @julzmax956
      @julzmax956 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the lifestyle that I found to be sad but rather the fact that this IS how people will judge you. That is life for the most part. It doesn't matter how successful you are, you will be judged by these mentioned categories in life. I find nothing wrong with someone living a materialistic lifestyle after all it is their life.

    In my opinion the best status symbol is your body. It stays with you at all times and shows you put in hard work and dedication to get where you are. Unfortunately this symbol is often neglected when people are to busy chasing "things". They say there is no time to workout and eat healthy, so they just grab cheeseburgers for lunch and dinner and snore in their sofa after work.

    You have no idea how clothes impact. I am in a wheel chair and as an experiment I dressed in cutoffs, tee shirt, flipflops, etc and rode the escalators in the subways in DC. I ride the escalators which put me in close proximity to people, forcing people to interact with me. The result, people treated me like a street person and were rude, impersonal, disdainful. Then I switched to a nice suit, shoes, watch and people treated me like royalty, opening doors, giving me right of way, waited patiently and were courteous, made eye contact, etc. So I pay attention to dress when I'm out in public. Thank you nice blog. Watch; old school duel time Bulova.

      Actually I think RMRS is correct when he talks about presentation. The same is true for the chair. It is important to smile, make eye contact, be assertive , clean, articulate and refined. My chair is spotless! What I find is that then people are people, some get it some do not. You will always find those that do not like people that are different, and if I were to be honest I think that is the minority of folks. Well and that is why I subscribe to this blog is that I am always looking or little ways to make it easier for people to approach me and get to know me.

    Dear sir, thank you very much for the video. I find your videos very interesting and they teach me a lot. I'm happy to see that you've addressed the intangible properties of 'style' in this video. Indeed it is not only about what car you drive or what watch you're wearing, but it is also HOW you drive that car and HOW you wear that watch. Drive in style. (most of the time that means decent: Drive properly, like a 'chauffeur'). Wear the watches you mentioned with style: it'll do that particular brand good and will do you even better! Looking forward to more videos. Greetings from The Netherlands

    I rarely comment on these videos but in this case i have some real world experience to bring to conversation. Not too many years ago, I was obsessed with collecting every high end toy. I had one the biggest boats at my marina, a new v8 Ferrari, and Mercedes Sl , among others. What it got me was two faced attention. Everyone wanted to pretend to others as if they knew me but meanwhile all I heard about was all tha resentment everyone had towards me. Not admiration. I was someone trying to mind his own business at the marina and had all this attention from people and very little of it was sincere or positve. Turth is most people are clueless as well. Status is all illusion. If you apsire to luxury , do it for yourself alone . Forget about the "status". It isn't real.

    I think this is good advise that applies to people that want to live a superficial life style. We shouldn't have to spend our entire paycheck to appear something we are not. Today, most good people don't care about watches or shoes or clothing. Friends at parties may admire your car if it is something special, but in the professional world this just means reliable transportation. The only people that care about what kind of car you drive, are people interested in getting money out of you. Wealthy people are actually trying to not look rich and wear watches and clothing obtained at Ross or Marshalls because in most places you might get unwanted behavior from others. BETTER advise : Dress for the particular place accordingly to your intentions (blend in or stand out), and speak accordingly to the audience. Be confident, be fun, be humble, be honest, be positive, speak and ask smart questions or be a good listener. This will get you a lot further.

You can say that this is all for superficial ppl and stuff but the truth is that your appearance does make a difference. Wheter you like it or not we don't live in a world of 'Beauty lies inside' and 'Be who you want'. Although I agree with both of them, appearance still has a huge impact on how people treat you. Like the guy in the comment section says. Dressing in a suit will get u treated like a king and dressing like a hobo will well...

    I'm a little confused by #5. You've repeatedly said your truck is 20 years old unless I'm mistaken. Aaron also drives a (I believe) 2007 Infiniti, which, granted it's a good vehicle, doesn't necessarily scream "money". So from these videos I got the impression, and I don't hold you to it, that the vehicle you use isn't really all that important, as long as you care about it (clean it, keep it in good condition etc.)? I'd love for you to elaborate on this, unless it's too much of a hassle. And as is customary, I must ask: How was your day, Antonio? Cheers and keep up the great videos.

      Great point - neither of us are ever seen in our vehicles by people we need to make an impression on. If I were a realtor selling 500K to Million dollar plus homes in Atlanta......you bet what I drive to show potential buyers these houses would matter. If I had a business in lawn care - the truck and the way my supplies looked could affect the price I can charge. For me - I live in a farming town of 1000 people - my truck is inconspicuous and functional works great for my needs!

However, I wouldn't take it out on someone attempting to provide insight & information. Observation is a primary element of existence and navigating everyday life. Subtle (or blatant) cues communicate, whether we like it or not. Attitude and individuality are so valuable, but that doesn't eradicate the programming we're attuned to. Music is very powerful. I'm short, stocky, have a weird lazy eye, not stylishly dressed but neat and clean and I'm pretty reserved in social settings. however, if I'm in a room with a piano, it doesn't matter if that room is full of handsome models, the biggest extroverts or millionaires. When I sit down and play that piano, I don't have to speak a word to anyone and that room is mine in ten minutes. I start with light jazz, followed by some bach preludes, then, a Chopin nocturne or two and I wait until a small crowd gathers until inevitably someone asks me to play something fast. As soon as I break into an etude by Liszt, Rachmaninov or Chopin, I have all eyes and ears on me.
    Music can be atomic social power for an introvert.

      They are mental health indicators, not status symbols.

    Hi Antonio,
    Great video. Still you have missed some of of the most important status lifters:
    1-sophisticated (yet humble) mastery of own language/speech (incl. non verbal)
    2-good /above average general knowledge of science, philosophy, history, geography etc...
    3- having a reputation (= people who never met you know about you and have an opinion -good or bad)
    4-show grace under pressure
    In crowded Manhattan or London city non of your business partners will ever see your car and no watch under 25K impresses anyone anymore these days.
    You're right that clothing & shoes and grooming seem really be the most direct, powerful and quick acting status lifters. If those are not impeccable all other efforts won't help.
    I love your vids and find them quite helpful and entertaining.

    Its not about being shallow or materialistic. Its more about the fact that people take visual clues and try to make sense of that, its more or less something that happens automatically (part of evolutionary psychology) wither you are shallow or not. Its also very much relative to your environment. Humans are hardwired to make snap judgments. We don't have the time/resources to get to analyze every person around us in depth.

    I kinda prefer people who have a brain and have something interesting to say or some interesting hobbies than people with a bunch of bling.

      @Jon Bradfield I find your retort erroneous. Indeed in a minority of instances one's use of slang may be an indication of said person having a weak education, however grammatical correctness is far more taxing. To procure a grammatically correct sentence in a typical conversation could be taken by many, if not most people as a posh insult. As if they have yet to "rise above."

    I think there's a time and a place for using status symbols to impress people because, with certain things, first impressions make a huge difference. But I also see the need for avoiding status symbols at other times, and I mean intentionally, so you can accomplish certain things without attracting attention.
    For example, if I put on my best suit and roll up in a Rolls Royce Phantom, with a driver popping out to open my door (even though I can do that myself), there are certain things I can accomplish at certain places that I wouldn't be able to do wearing a t-shirt and jeans and driving up in say a Jeep Patriot. But even then, because I'm wearing a suit, the suits that greet me are still going to have their guard up and I'm either going to have to prep a lot more or invest a lot more time to get what I want which results in more time invested to accomplish the same end result.
    But if I put on sneakers, jeans and a t-shirt I can get in the back door and get a complete tour of the facility precisely because the guys in the back see me as one of them even if I'm far from it. They'll show you everything you wouldn't get to see even if you happened to get a tour from a suit up front.
    Pro-tip: I've had more "guided tours" of more businesses, seeing exactly how their facility is laid out and learning about their key customers, suppliers, operations, and even the personalities of their core staff and who really runs the show in reality and not just on paper learning far more than I would have had I went through the front door wearing a suit in far less time, than most people would ever suspect and I did it wearing cheap shoes, t-shirts and sometimes even shorts.
    So everything is relative to what you're doing, what you're trying to accomplish and why.
    A few months ago, I decided I wanted to do some biking for the day instead of my usual work routine. I knew that I could simply grab my cell phone and that I could get plenty of work done during the day while being out on a trail somewhere getting plenty of fresh air and exercise. So off I went.
    I got up early as usual and about mid morning decided to go grab a drink at a certain somewhere and sit, relax and get some work done while taking a break from literally biking around all day.
    While waiting in line, an older man commented to me that I must be unemployed or on welfare. Yes, he actually opened up by saying both of those things.
    I looked at him and recognized who he is as he owns a airplane business although he didn't recognize me. I said "what makes you say that?"
    He responded with "you clearly don't have a job you need to be at with the way you're dressed." I was wearing shorts, sneakers and maybe an exercise shirt. And it was a Tuesday.
    I responded, "I actually own several businesses but I don't have to kiss your ass and I certainly owe you no explanation especially given that you apparently lack the wisdom to avoid judging other people by appearances only and certainly at this stage in your life." He's past 70 without looking up his information.
    He decided to try the "do you know who I am" line on me and I said "yes, you're (first and last name) and you're value has gone down in my book because you seem to go around trying to put other people down, without getting to know them, based purely on first appearances and I now think of you about the same way I think of a turd." By the way, turds are useful but most people would only see that statement as an insult.
    He was surprised that I knew who he was and he asked me who I am and when I told him his non-verbal comm was all I needed to see to know that he was thinking oh shit, I said the wrong thing to the wrong person this morning.
    So, sometimes, using first impressions to size someone up is exactly the wrong thing to do. You have to be smart in life and sometimes people of exceptional means go around dressing like they are mediocre simply to not be recognized (a ball cap and cheap sunglasses can often make all the disguise you need) in order to stay grounded and in touch with reality. I like to sometimes sit at a fast food restaurant, getting some work done on my cell phone, and listen to some of the conversation taking place around me just to keep up with what random people are talking about.
    Back side of the story. I was looking for a certain airplane to purchase a couple of months following that encounter and I saw that the certain airplane that I was looking for was for sale through his company and since it's right in my hometown I decided to give him a call. I did meet with him to see the particular plane I was interested in and he expressed that he was sorry for the way he treated me when we incidentally bumped into one another in the above story.
    I ended up not buying that exact airplane because I found a better deal, less total time, same quality, better upgrades and a better price somewhere else. But I didn't give him another speech. I think the turd speech was more than clear enough.
    I just walked away and walking away I thought to myself that it's important to avoid making judgements about people based purely on appearances without at least making some observations about their character and what they bring to the table.
    Example: I've interviewed job applicants from all sorts of backgrounds including Ivy League and flagship University graduates to ordinary high school graduates and veterans. And I've noticed that I actually prefer the high school graduates and veterans I've hired who maybe went to a relatively unknown state university to the flagship or purportedly prestigious universities precisely because the people I hired outperformed the people who came from the flagship or otherwise more prestigious universities and family backgrounds and I'll bet on performance over propaganda any day of the week.
    I happen to know quite a few psychopaths who dress well and are in positions of prestige, power and influence. And I would rather do business with a person of mediocre means who isn't bent on dispensing a pack of lies, on a quest for domination over others including even psychological abuse along the way.
    Just food for thought for whatever someone chooses to walk away with.

    Addendum: Knowing the rules helps a man DECIDE the ways he gets status. As far as a mate goes I'd only be concerned with what's important to me, some of that would benefit my status and some wouldn't. Accepting that I would then need to compensate by focusing more in the other areas to gain status. Thanks again
