I started my career at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center working on the Space Station Flight Telerobotic Servicer program. Our ground test bed was a 7 axis robot, built by a small startup founded by engineers laid off by Cincinnati Milicron. It used synchro-resolvers for position control. They interfaced with a chip which generated a digital position output, and an analog velocity signal. Their engineer told me that the analog velocity output was very quiet, and accurate because it was derived from a PLL in the chip. The best description of the manipulator arm was that it was 2 meters long, and could throw a 160mph fastball with. 16lb bowling ball. Their patented(since expired) analog controller servoed torque measured at the output of the harmonic drive reducing gears, and then the velocity of the resolver via the analog signal from that chip. They could raise the gain on the velocity loop high enough that the arm, with NO counterweights would take 15-20 minutes to sag down 100mm when given a 0 velocity input. Impressive system.

That IS extremely impressive! I used to work for Monarch Machine tool very early in my career and I was always impressed with what machine tool CNC servos could do. That had to be awesome (and a little scary) to watch it do its thing. Thanks for the comment!

    Hiii sir
Can u explain why how sine cosine synchro resolvers measure angular displacement in tanks

The resolvers would be connected to gun elevation to provide feedback for the fire control "computer" for setting the range of the projectile.
