The song you used while trying to get that calf away from the mother killed me as it fit in so well with the mother trying to run you down.

@@farmdude It sounds like a chase theme or fight theme in my eyes whenever I listen to it.

I don't care how good of a calf a cow produces, if she might take someone, she goes to the sale. Of course with Herefords you rarely have to do that.

I have a few cows that are sentimental. I will keep them in their prime, but I'll ship em the first time they give me a reason lol

I’ll probably get rid of her in the next year or so. She always brings a calf home in the fall and that’s what it’s all about. At least until I can’t get out of the way. 🤣

@@farmdude Ya I hear ya. You certainly have a process to get the calf tagged. My concern would be a hospital bill someday lol

At the place I help out on, we do it differently; almost each and every damn time. Which of course works out differently most times,. I like this and like you said, it only looks rough and mean but anybody who thinks the calf 's hurt should watch them being born. Or the way some of the other mamas send them flying if they get too close. I saw a pretty small calf get butted into an iron pipe feeder so hard I figured it might be dead, but for sure have broken bones and by the time I could get over there, it was already back with it's mama, barely missing a step. M brother wants to build a cage, but we haven't yet. I have some ideas of my own, but that right there is the problem with that notion. And most of all, it's because calving's started early, "unexpected" as it ALWAYS is, EVERY winter so we weren't prepared and ready to go, and of course it'll be dark, muddy or snowy and maybe even brutally cold, so expect something to not start or get stuck, and this this little sweetie calves and meets you at the back of your truck, wanting to discuss and enthusiastic to show why she feels this way. And I guess we have jumped in the back of trucks a time or two to tag and vax, but guess what then, guess we why don't do THAT anymore? Non ranching folks might not know cows can't jump, but let's hear some stories from those of us who DO know just how well, and HIGH, a mad enough cow actually can. She must not know her secret cow power, because she never left the ground from what it looked like. But if she ever did get a hoof on something like the truck bed, she's going straight to the top. Well, not in a straight like, and you won't be the only thing all busted up, either. So how about you guys, how do you handle those cows? Oh, and was she BITING at him?? I've joked about biters and how they'd take the whole arm off if they did. But I've never seen an actual biter before, but now they might do exist. I'd have to have a pistol on at all times to feel half-way safe around there, and even that won't help much if the cow is scanning you for soft parts with its forehead, trying to gauge if it could mash you out flat and wide enough to dance on. The best mothers aren't the most common to come across, so I know why it can be worth keeping and dealing with them. But man oh man, I'd have to have been born and raised amongst cows to have the calm and cool demeanor you have.

Been there and done that enough.. Trust me, getting hurt by a cow isn't worth the sentiment. Sell the cow.

Why breed the crazy, when you can turn it into ground beef and get sane, gentle easy working cows?
