    Thanks for the information about cadmium. I've worked on these before, without actually thinking about such stuff. The one in my possession at the moment was so rusted and pitted that I had to totally disassemble it, strip the paint off, respray it etc. Even though its probably the lest "hi fi" of my decks, it has the most personality.

    Great job and as you say they are easy to restore by the way, you've got the spindle bearing on upside-down you always want the grease setting on the top so that as its use it lubricates the bearings upside-down it's simply rolls out

    We had the same deck in the radiogram I was brought up with. My parents had it as a wedding present in 1960. It was a Westminster model which I think was the brand name used by Curry's

    Just in case anyone watching this doesn't know, just be careful when dismantling the motor, as it's possible with some old motors of that type to refit the stator the wrong way up and if that happens it will run backwards when powered, I know 'cos it's happened to me before now, and the same thing can also happen with little low voltage DC cassette deck motors, they too will run backwards if you don't get the stator correctly refitted so if you strip one do mark the casing first across the join before removing the screws.

    I would advise any amateurs servicing anything like this record deck to take plenty of careful digital photos of the mechanism first before dismantling so you can see how it should all go back together especially as service manuals for these old decks can be well nigh impossible to obtain now.

    Thanks for this video! I just found one exactly the same and this will help tremendously in cleaning it.
    Where can I get cartridges and needles for this model? What type are they?

      Glad it might help.
      The cartridge is (from memory) a BSR TC8. There are some new, reproductions available on that well known aution site. Just be careful careful not to buy an old one....most of them are well past their best and have little or no output. Good luck 👍

    What about the tracking weight adjustment? I've just removed the an old knackered TC8 cartridge from one of these decks and fitted a BSR C1 in it's place with a new stylus, but it's miles lighter than the old cartridge so now it needs adjusting so have you made any other videos showing how to set the correct tracking weight, which as far as I know should be about 5 grams, which needs setting with a stylus balance scale and I have one of those but it's a very long time since I've worked on such an old deck, it must be somewhere around 40 years and I'm not quite sure now how to precisely adjust the tracking weight on one of these old BSR decks.

      It's done (very crudely) by adjusting the spring under the tone arm.

    • @majorpygge-phartt2643
      @majorpygge-phartt2643 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I've discovered that now, there's lots of little holes to hook the spring into but getting it to hook into the right one is a lot easier said than done, but I've done it now and it works, or at least it plays well but the auto switch off doesn't work, any ideas?@@vintagetvandwireless

      Well spotted Gary.
      I should have mentioned it in the video, but I forgot. On this one it was very free and not seized at all.

      @@vintagetvandwireless It probably belonged to non smokers for most of its life. Most of them that came in in the 60’s were gummed up with the horrible tar.
      Can you imagine the problems with Smokers if Scophony had succeeded and mass produced?

    • @vintagetvandwireless
      @vintagetvandwireless  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was one of the only ones I've seen that wasn't gummed up. It was so easy to move, you can hear it rattling when I move the large gear around!
      I'd forgotten about those Scophony receiver designs....yes, I think ciggy tar would have been a problem if they'd ever got off the ground.

      @@vintagetvandwireless I understand that Scophony did make tv receiver/projectors for cinemas-none known to survive [ie with rotating mirror drums/ultrasonic light cell etc]
