What sample size is required for accurate and confident estimates?

  • I answer this common question in a general sense to help people evaluate the research they might come across online or in the news. This question can be asked in a more sophisticated way in relation to statistical power, as well, which I hope to cover in a series of other videos one day!

    I would also like to add the ethical issue with oversampling, not only because of the cost, but also regarding the research ethics. In almost all studies (psychology) we use the time and effort from our participants, and especially in studies that have some risk for the participants there is an issue with oversampling because we expose the unnecessary number of participants to the risk. I really enjoy your videos and I am looking forward to statistical power story

    You mentioned sample data provided by computer programs; can you give a link to sample data online or by computer program one can use to practice statistics?

      I used R to generate the sample data. Specifically, I used the following commands:
      > set.seed(124)
      > sample10 summary(sample10)
