  • This film shows the first of a fleet of eight £1million (each) hydrogen fuel cell buses which entered service on 26th January 2011 and are being used on London's bus route RV1.
    RV1 is high-profile bus service which links Tower Gateway Docklands Light Railway station with Covent Garden, travelling via Tower Bridge, London Bridge station, City Hall, Waterloo Station, Aldwych and some areas which are popular with tourists.
    The buses are operating as part of the HyFLEET:CUTE project which is demonstrating, testing and developing hydrogen powered public transport buses and the supporting hydrogen production and distributing infrastructure in regular public service operation.
    The project is global in scope with buses being trialled in ten cities on three continents.
    The cities are:
    London (United Kingdom),
    Perth (Australia),
    Reykjavik (Iceland),
    Beijing (China),
    Amsterdam (Netherlands),
    Barcelona & Madrid (Spain),
    Berlin & Hamburg (Germany),
    and Luxembourg (Luxembourg).
    Funding for this hydrogen bus experiment has jointly come from Transport for London (TfL), the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the European Union via the Clean Hydrogen in Cities (CHIC) project.
    The original plans were for London to have 10 hydrogen buses, with five of them using internal combustion engines (ICE). However this was scaled back to reduce costs. Berlin will be trialling hydrogen ICE buses.
    The primary benefit of hydrogen as a fuel is that it does not pollute the local environment - ie: the streets in which we live. This is good news for human health!
    Instead of noxious gases hydrogen powered vehicles only emit water vapour.
    BUT
    At the present time sourcing and distributing the hydrogen is an extremely energy hungry process - so the global environment is still negatively impacted.
    It will probably only be after the 2012/3 events - and subsequent societal changes - that we finally solve the pollution conundrum.

    These buses were built by Wrightbus of N. Ireland using a specially modified version of its Pulsar 2 body structure on the VDL SB200 chassis.
    They feature ISE hybrid-electric drive and Ballard fuel-cell technologies.
    To help reduce overall energy consumption they regenerate their braking energy using ultracapacitors.
    12m in length these buses are 11' 2" / 3.4m high, they seat 34 passengers, have space for one wheelchair and weigh 11,597kg.
    The youtube still image shows the hydrogen fuel tanks on the buses' roof. Along with several other images of this bus it has been placed on the Wikipedia Encyclopeadia and made 'public domain / copyright free'.

    @collieultimo Thanks!
    The rattling did surprise me, I thought that much money had been invested in the bus building industry to try and eradicate this type of noise, as along with vibration and engine fumes it is seen as a negative feature which turns people off buses as a mode of transport.
    At least this bus has no unpleasent fumes! But one bus driver was somwhat unsure if he really wanted to be anywhere near a hydrogen bus; he was concerned about an explosion.

    Nice video of an interresting project.
    If I listen to the rattling, squeaking plastic, it sounds like German top quality, very familiar.

    @dazado75 Thanks for the additional and technical info.
    It does seem that whilst the 'New Bus For London' (NB4L) steals the limelight and takes flak for its cost, these even more expensive experimental buses are ignored.

    @moshoula (...continued) On the Tuesday & after seeing (at last!) the new buses mentioned on the Chic website I did consider re-editing the film to completely remove the references to HYFLEET:CUTE but decided to leave it as-is' as a testament to bureaucratic projects which do not keep their websites updated. Anyway, as I said before, they were conceived under HYFLEET:CUTE.
    btw, with advanced magnetics we could have pollution-free energy 'today'. The technology already exists!

    I also want to see regenerative braking systems fitted on all busses, today. This goal should have been attended to a decade ago.
    It does not matter if it is feeding into a resistor grid. Even diesel busses benefit from regenerative breaking. Hot brakes do not work too well on heavy vehicles. By keeping the brake temperature down, the safety and efficiency of those braking systems are increased. Look up the Voith fluid retarder; an accessory which mounts onto the vehicle's gearbox.
    As vehicle body producers become accustomed to installing these dynamos, they can gradually start storing power in the vehicles ignition and accessory battery systems. Finally, an advanced regenerative braking system can be fitted to this fuel cell vehicle, storing everything it generates 100% of the time.

      Andrew Sinclair on some buses, they can't do regenerative braking, on some Hybrids they can, but other buses (like the Dennis Trident) will not fit.

    @moshoula Hello and thanks; AIUI the buses were conceived under HyFLEET:CUTE but it was then decided to create a new project with a slightly different remit called Chic. I mention Chic near the end of the film.
    When researching this film my web searches gave very confusing results with the Chic site saying nothing about the new London buses (I think they were added on the Monday after the first bus entered service - whilst my film was made over the week before!)

    Like the sound of the Bus. It's quiet as a trolleybus. :) The FuelCell engine does produce electricity and the wheel are powered by electric motors right? But the Wright design looks strange with the FuelCell parts on the roof. great footage by the way.

    The technology is between the Americans a company called Ballard, who makes the fuel cell and Bluways from Belgium who make the U caps system the hydrogen itself comes from Holland from a company called Air Products and the route is run by First bus. but over all owned by TFL, latter this year the whole RV1 route will be hydrogen buses at the cost of £1 million each.
    half of the hydrogen tanks have been removed as it does not need them and this allows extra passengers.
    Each tank holds 350 bar

    @paulikxp The rattling noise has nothing to do with the roof load. It is simply the plastic and the way it is put together and how the surface is treated at the contact area to the next plastic part. Our company produce plastics for nearly all bus builder worldwide and all save money at this problem. Only in top class coaches they put PA foil between the PC/ABS parts, but for that you need extra money. In standard busses the spray silicon H10 at the contact areas and this soon disappears.

    The gear box is made by Siemens.
    It has two that are geared together on propshaft.
    I just started replacing the steering pressure relief valves as the drivers were complaining about the steering being to heavy.
    4 more are to be expected in June.
    What we have been told the buses will not run during the Olympics.
    These buses are not just about being green, the end of oil must be.

    Not a nice sound from the electric motor, but I’m sure that could be sorted with better sound insulation. But for me the worse noise is the sound of the seats and poles as the bus rolls over bumps etc.

  • @schmelzbrot

    @secondlifeundergroun I guess it's a fixed one, or that the bus does not even need a gearbox. There are no "shift" sounds as it accelerates.

  • @paulikxp
    @paulikxp 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @collieultimo The roof load does add some additional sidewise movement to the body and accelerates the rate the bus starts rattling. But even if not: what does this have to do with German quality? Compared to British built buses, the Citaro bendies don't rattle more than a Dennis Dart, Enviro 200 or whatever. When the garages are not able to close the roof haunches properly or to replace broken locks then it's no wonder that they are noisy. Bat thanks anyway for your reply.

  • @paulikxp
    @paulikxp 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @collieultimo Could you please tell me what this bus has to do with German top quality? This bus is Irish built, probably with German components. But those won't rattle themselves, noisy is the maybe flimsy construction, combined with a high roof load.

    if we want hydrogen in a large scale, then as of today we have to turn to coal again.. solar or other technologies such as nuclear fusion is still far away.. so i dont think this is going to change the way we travel anytime soon!! though it would provide some vital operational/logistical inputs that could be used to improve the system/hydrogen infrastructure..

    Alas not yet... most likely the technology will come from somewhere like Russia, China or another 'non-western' country as our leaders will squelch anything that does not use fossil fuels. The stock market stands to lose too much money! Trials using hydrogen fuel are only acceptable because it is not feasible at present.
    Wait a few more years - the technology will probably be available by the middle of this decade - after the 2011 / 2012 'events' and the 2013 onwards changes.

    Why can’t TFL and or the Company trialing these busses invest in a Electrolysis device?, they come in self contained Lorry containers, so one could be placed at one or both ends of the route, with a renewable energy Turbine to power it!. They can’t loose any money cos this is the way things are going anyway, and if TFL decide against HFC they can always sell the Electrolysis device and use the renewable energy turbine for the running of the depot.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are talking about a way to power the buses - recharge their batteries? Is the technology you describe being tested anywhere?
      I would be stunned to see TfL trial this at the present time. Its not just because TfL is in the midst of a financial crisis (partly because Crossrail is opening late) but also because TfL has just decided to not trial the OppCharge bus battery charging system which would work well with the electrolysis tech you describe.
      Are you aware of Brilliant Light Power as a possible new way to create electricity? I have also heard of a new way to generate electricity using magnetics that is being worked on - once perfected it will only need a small amount of power to start it going and then it will be self-powering.
