The attention to detail in this scene is magnificent. Cagney is of course excellent. But the orchestra, the singing, the perfection of the stage scene and even the lowering of the curtain at the beginning and the end are all top-notch to me. It's almost as if you are actually present in the theatre.

Johnny Boyle, the famous dance coach, had known Cohan well whereas Cagney had only met him once backstage. Boyle was hired to teach Jimmy Cohan's moves, though the stiff legs and cocky manner were something the two greats already had in common.

Is this the same bloodthirsty bastard who was on top of the world on that burning oil tank?
Was that snotty Punk coup faced off against his old friend the priest Pat O'Brien? Is this that sniffling good-for-nothing coward in the fighting 69th to grew a pair of the end and sacrificed himself to save his men? My God, versatility in the man was amazing. This was definitely is finest hour though, my personal favorite part was the Give My Regards to Broadway number I love when he danced down the stairs at the end. I just the one the whole movie, it's no Masterpiece and so was Cagney. An unbelievable talent I mean just boggles the mind how he could defy gravity and touch your heart yet make you sick and white heat or with you on a punch his lights out in the fighting 69th floor is this the jerk of the 9

A culture of an era gone by...who ever could or ever would have imagined that there will come a time when there'll be those choosing not to stand during the anthem at a football game or for that matter, burn American flags at demonstrations right here in America....who could of imagined. You can bet that never would have been considered as one of those swell things to do back then see, for you would've been off your nut for even thinking something like that and how...John L. would've flattened you with a good one !!

They sure don't write them like this any more, pity. Jack Warner was a perfectionist. If you're a fan of old films, listen to the sound track in one of Warner Brother's films. He used full orchestra and old school choruses to enrich your film viewing experience. Interesting aside, James Cagney didn't want to do the picture. During the time when they were trying to cast the picture, he was called up before the Senate Committee on Un-American Activities as a Commie! He was exonerated but the damage had been done to his career. THAT is when he decided to do the picture. It totally saved and re-energized his career. During the initial shooting of the film, Pearl Harbor was bombed. They decided then and there they'd do their damned best to make a great film. That may be why, to some degree, some of the numbers seem a bit over the top. The picture was immensely popular at the time of it's release, a shining success. Cohan's wonderful early twentieth century music shines in the spotlight here. Thanks for posting it, it's one of the greats.

Jimmy's brother William Cagney was his agent. William told Jimmy that portraying the legendary Broadway song and dance star from the Great War not only would suit his talents and personality but cement him in moviegoers' minds as an all-American patriot. Jack Warner approved, being acutely aware how many radicals the studio had employed to bolster its image of 'good citizenship', 'stories torn from today's headlines' and a penchant for 'social significance'. Wrapping itself in the Stars and Stripes as war clouds gathered again would disarm critics.
The film was a huge hit and led to Jimmy and William partnering as producers on some less popular efforts.

Notice the year this film was released- 1942. One year after Pearl harbor was attacked. The United States was at war on two fronts. The Military had first dibs on things like color film- which was used to photograph bombing targets both before and after raids as well as areas where ground attacks may soon take place. Back then, you either had to have special clearances or be filming things for the Military. Luxuries like this film didn't get any special treatments.
