  • In each kayaker's progression, there will be ups and downs. Sometimes the plateaus can be discouraging and frustrating. In this week's video, I discuss a different way to approach your kayaking. Boat Placement. This seemingly self explanatory concept is often the last thing on a paddler's mind in the middle of a rapid. However, it can, alone, determine success or failure in a rapid or river. I discuss how changing our focus while paddling will give us both the proper motivation to keep training, but also the mindset to get through difficult water without reverting to survival mode. come along as we discuss boat placement. Along the way, there are some first combat rolls, first rock spins, first 360 surfs, and many other fantastic moments! Amie, Jerry, Adam, Grant, Austin, Kevin and I had a great time making this one!
    We were kayaking the Haw River NC - Glencoe to Redslide at 12' and at 7'.

But through determination and grit he tasted real ("good times") "very good times" way to go guys. Thanks for the shares. Pete way to go with helping him all the way to the finish line.

      Thanks a ton for the kind words Steve! There are a ton of great instruction options around the NC area...and they are way better at it than me. Where do you live? If you are near NC area, look up ACE Kayaking School, H2O Dreams and perhaps the NOC as well as some independent instructors like Boyd Ruppelt. They are as good as they come and live and breathe this stuff!

    Interesting video. How long did it take you to get comfortable paddling until you felt good teaching newbies?

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I like teaching. Even as a beginner, I tried to help my friends learn to roll. Nowadays, it seems 90% of my time on the water is spent in that capacity. Not sure I can really define a moment where I became comfortable. You need to be able to take care of those that are in the water with you...as long as that can be effected share what you got with whoever needs it!

    • @RiverKingsKayak

      I am sure they are out there, but I dont know those rivers in that area. Look for some printed guide books. We have several for NC that list, describe in detail and even rate on several levels such as scenery, quality of water etc...Those were a tremendous help to me as I was getting started. Pete. Surfing..... I struggle so much because early on when I was learning to surf I got windowshaded and now I get lost in my head every time I try to surf causing me to not focus on what I'm doing. So from your videos I get the impression I need to go for a few swims to work on it. Correct?

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say, dont be afraid of the window shade...it will happen on occasion and more so during the earlier learning. If you have a solid roll. It is mostly a non-issue anyway!

    I noticed that you use Liquidlogic kayaks in all your videos, how do you feel about the Remix for a beginner? Will it catch eddies and surf and do most things except advanced playboating? Also, do you recommend sizing up or down in them if you fall between sizes, I'm 6'2" and 200lbs so not sure if the 69 or the 79 is right.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jimmy! Yes, the remix is widely regarded as one of the best all around platforms out there! It can do it all. I have the 69, my son and daughter both have the 47, and P5 just got the 59 to grow into as he grows out of the 47. I would recommend the 79 at your height for sure. Cant go wrong with a remix!

    Any new river runners coming 2021 I should hold off on. Been running up to class 2 in my Elise shoel 100ne. I enjoy playing in the rapids and surfing but need somthing that will keep up with the dagger axis and tsunami 120 my friends run. Tried the axis it didn't do it for me and probably wont be going beyond class 3 anytime soon. The hammer looked good but its nolonger in production and of course there are the crossovers. Katana, remix xp seem to be the only ones in production though.

      Dagger is def good. As for the "best", that is going to be very subjective. The only way to know is to demo the boat or at least try to sit in it for a while. The Stratos 12.5 is what Dirt Dobber is using on our touring trips and he really likes it!

    So I'm still waiting on my stinger xp from last years order. I'm told I'll have it in April this year. So I've slowly purchased some gear in preparation. Still in need of a skirt. Considering the rivers I'll be starting on will range from a class I to the very occasional class III. I was thinking up starting with a bungee skirt until I'm more confident in my roll and move to a rand skirt for the larger rivers later. I've run these rivers before on my SOT, but I feel it's going to be learning all over again with this boat.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
