    1:40 The active ingredient in poison ivy (urushiol) is used as a lacquer in Japan, so in its refined form it's like a polymer. There's a tree in Japan that has a lot of the stuff in its sap, and you can also find it in the wood of cashew family trees including mangos, so if you have cashew or mango wood, it's a really bad idea to burn it.
    I think the rule of thumb is, if you're repeatedly exposed to any kind of polymer (latex, resins like epoxy), your immune system is eventually going to start developing a reaction to it.
    Thing is, the resin in poison ivy will usually trigger a reaction in most people, so it's really interesting that urushiol doesn't trigger a reaction in Post.

      It's a genetic wildcard; my mother was completely immune to poison ivy, no matter how much she tromped through the woods and brush. Her sisters, though? Itch-central if they followed her through the woods~

    • @skrimper
      @skrimper ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I thought the more exposure you had the more immune you become 😮 guess I need to stop walking through it in shorts lol. Been immune since I was a kid, dont want to ruin that! It looks painful

    • @jonlouis4263
      @jonlouis4263 ปีที่แล้ว

      Increased exposure could increase your immune system response, but it's all a genetic crap shoot. You are either responsive to urushiol or not.

    • @dancingnature
      @dancingnature ปีที่แล้ว

      My grandmother was immune to it she’d pull it out using her bare hands. That ended when she was around 85. She started to stay a mild reaction to the poison ivy so she couldn’t just pull it out of the ground anymore

    The birds you're seeing are most likely Red-winged Blackbirds. They are all over wetlands. They are mostly black with orange patches on their wings. Baltimore Orioles have a lot more orange on them and aren't usually seen in more then two at a time as a pair. Red-winged Blackbirds are usually all over in an area as it is their nesting habitat.

    Those birds, as you guessed, are most likely Northern (aka: Baltimore) orioles. Orange and black (bright orange for males. Paler orange for females). Beautiful singing birds, with a wider range of songs than even Cardinals. If interested in attracting them, lots of people will cut an orange in half and place it on a railing. But what they love even more is grape jelly! That'll have them coming in no time! Other birds as well seem to love grape jelly, such as red breasted woodpeckers, purple finches and rose breasted grossbeaks (also a very pretty bird!).

    Our weather lately reminds me of the movie Groundhog Day. 50s during the day, 40s at night, sunshine (mostly), a dry north wind and 15% humidity. Our norm is 75%-85% humidity with marine layer drizzle almost every day and a southwest wind. Our last rain was the end of April. They just put us under burn restrictions, which normally don't happen until mid August. I have a feeling it will be an interesting summer!
