  • Akasaka Aka, the mangaka behind Kaguya-sama Love Is War, has a new manga that's turning into an anime this Spring 2023 season: Oshi no Ko, or My Star. It's a manga about idols, music, theater, film, manga, television, vtubing and pretty much everything in the entertainment industry and it's probably one of the best pieces of fiction ever created.

But if it’s an anime, why do you only show the manga?
I’m trying out this more serious format that I’ll distinguish with those white borders. Let me know what you think!

Ackshuwally, "ko" doesn't necessarily have to mean literally "child" or "boy/girl". The word "ko" can also be used to emphasize the feeling of fondness or that someone is really precious to you.
In a way, "My Star" is a fairly fitting title not only because of star motif or the fact it's about idols (stars), but also because there's that feeling of preciousness. I've met many people who call their children or loved ones "their stars".

I am so excited for the anime onlys to watch the first episode and just go "wtf" every 15 mins or so

Getting people hooked and then caught up with the manga by telling them to read just the first ten chapters perfectly describes my own experience recommending Oshi no Ko to my friends, lol
Works 100% of the time. xD

Oshi no Ko is the greatest fiction I’ve read/seen. Been caught up for a few months, and it has never ceased to amaze me. It’s probably the most audacious manga written because it completely criticizes the industry it comes from. It’s so genius, and it makes it completely relatable to people who aren’t involved in the industry. If it was just a critique, it’d be interesting. But it somehow manages to tell an incredibly intriguing, emotional, impactful story at the same time. On top of that, it doesn’t shy away from the struggles of being famous that are often glossed over by the public.
Akane’s initial outset on the reality show actually makes me weep, because it shows what it’s like for someone who’s been brought up in an industry to try their absolute best to meet unrealistic expectations, only to fail and be shredded for it. We can pretend that words don’t hurt us, but the truth is that words do hurt, especially so for those who put themselves out there only to be butchered for it.
I literally just reread Oshi no Ko two days ago to refresh myself, and it hit me just as hard if not harder. I genuinely believe that if people don’t like this series, they’re either lying or have no understanding of what quality is. Oshi no Ko is such a contrast of the typical mainstream stuff that it’s basically just a big middle finger to the entire industry. It says “don’t push your mangaka to overwork themselves” to the publishers who make such unreasonable demands. It says “treat people as people” to the movie, theater, and idol industries that abuse their actors/idols to make a profit, on both the fan and production level.
This comment is just the surface of the story in my interpretation, and this video is so well-made. I just wanted to ramble about why I love it. Thank you for analyzing my favorite series in a way that I can tell is from a genuine, passionate fan, just like me. I’m so excited for what’s to come!

I would like to add one more tragic aspect to Aqua's trauma from the incident.
Akasaka-sensei managed to show the reincarnation aspect having such tragic consequences to one's psyche, and i don't think I've ever seen this in any reincarnation story.
Aqua, despite having memories of his past life, is undoubtedly still a kid. Him having the memories of his past life does not make him an adult in anyway. His brain is still developing and the age 3-5 is considered as one of the most important point of a child's further development. Then comes Ai's brutal death.
Aqua thought his memories as a doctor would end up helping him in some way in the future (typical thoughts of anyone who gets reincarnated) only to be hit with the harsh reality that he cannot save his mother because he is a child, the knowledge he possessed from his past life was useless and he could only see her slowly bleed to her death.
This leads to him blaming himself for being unable to save her and later on, the very past which he thought would be of help to him ends up tormenting him, reminding him he doesn't deserve happiness, and the more this happens the more the doctor starts being viewed moreso as a monster or a shadow tormenting him.

Great manga and I can't wait for the anime too. Stopped around that live action music play adaptation arc. Love the story, but honestly as much as I like the in depth look into the intricacies of the industry and those within I get bogged down by the heavy text. A quirk of the author, but a somewhat exhausting one.
Great video on the topic too. Felt like you gassed it up a bit too much at the start, but still good. Usually hop in on the casual streams from time to time and the normal formatted videos are also fun to have here and there too.

Btw I love this video! Great production and story telling. But I just came up with a crazy theory. Btw I'm all the way to 115 in the manga I'm not going to spoil but I know some things. So my theory, so hoshino ai wasn't really popular before she had the kids. Then all of the sudden she got popular. I wonder if she made a deal with a ĝod in the world, which as a side effect, ended up making the 2 kids be reborn. But she knew it from the beginning. Now even crazier idea, So we know hoshino ai has been putting up a front and lying to everyone. Now what if she is actually Darker then we think. You can take the chapter where ai is making a video for the kids to be delivered later in life by the director. It's like she knew she wouldn't make it to that point and lied like she always did, but what if that Darker side is why the doctor died. She found out that he knew her idol work, and maybe wanted to keep her secret. She had him killed. And not only the father is messed up but the mother is also. Now I know that's far out. Keep in mind with all the twists and turns of what has happened, you can't rule out anything. But that's just a theory and anime theory.

I really think Aka burned out while drawing a love is war chapter and writing this series at the same time many times within a week. I think why he quit, trying and focused on writing so that he doesn't burn out again. Still, he's going to release another series called Love Agency that's gonna come out on the 27th.
