Stayed in La Mongie this year to watch the Tour come through and it is so hard to breathe just normally when you're not accustomised to it, can't imagine having to cycle it!
Looking forward to the climb of the Ventoux, it seems like an "easier" climb than the first 2 you guys did. I think that if I start somewhere in the Alps en Pyrenees, I'ld be on the Ventoux and come back next year for the Tourmalet and Alpe d'Huez.
Please just keep using these amazing tunes you're using. I've watched "Alejandro Valverde's Canyon Ultimate CF SLX" a thousand times and this one I'll watch even more not just because of the footage, but due to deep tracks. Border Crossing - "Taxi" and Maribou State - "Larks Rise" plese keep using these tracks.
Hi Guys, I've been watching your videos for a while and noticed you're lucky enough to ride tons of different bike! Please could you do a video showing your vast array of bikes?
I love this video and I'm actively working on being able to climb effectively. France is definitely on the list of places I'd love to ride. Any epic rides in the US? The ride up the Mt. Washington auto road in NH is supposed to be quite a challenge and I'd love to hear the guys compare it v. some of these European rides.
anybody got the titles of the music used in this video? (apologies if it is already here and i have just missed it). The guys at GCN are normally pretty good at linking them in the "About" section, but they seem to not be there. Keep climbing Dan! Envy your climbing ability.
Those tracks are now in the description for you, but they are: Quark - Point of seeing: gcn.eu/1m7SwZQ Maribou state - Larks rise: gcn.eu/1pspxys Pete and the pirates - Blood gets thin: gcn.eu/1APXnjO
Hi guys, awesome channel but wondered would it be possible to get a vid on how best to train to tackle a climb like this or Ventoux if you don't have access to these kind of climbs at home?
GCN should try or check out the Taiwan KOM Challenge. It starts at sea level (0m) to an elevation of 3275m in 100km of constant climbing. It starts out at 3-4% then mid goes up to 12% but some parts are over 20%. The last 8km average at over 16%. I live in Taiwan and this climb is in my bucket list. Check out this article for a firsthand experience. cyclingtips.com.au/2013/11/four-hours-on-the-rivet-the-2013-taiwan-kom-challenge/
Great video as always. But I do have to scoff a little bit at the 1500m comment. I live at 2500m and that's where I start my climbs. :) A ride at 1500m would be full of O2! Eventually you should show off some of our epic Colorado, USA climbs.
Yep! I (James) did it that way a couple of weeks ago and did it in about the same time. I'm 37 though so you're a bit younger (and probably fitter) than me :-)
Did it last week. 1:08 with a compact crankset. Got my bike stolen 2 days later. Whatever. Little extra tip for one-ride-a-week cyclists: Dutch Corner does not look very Dutch if you don't make that climb on a rest day, but it's a church, cemetary and rest area called Saint Ferreol, and the last place before l'Alpe where you can refill your water bottles. Also: highly recommended: after l'Alpe, go to Col de Sarenne (1999m, just shy of 2k!), and then down the Vallée de Ferrand. The descent will be slow because the road is very narrow with a zillion turns, but the scenery is breathtaking.
am on a 16 speed Chris Boardman road bike is there any tips that I should know when I go out on my bike over small hills/climbs. I am newbie to road bikes
Well, Dan had a standard 39-53 chainset on, so it's not impossible, but he did say that he struggled and would have preferred to be using a compact. The pro's will race up on standard gearing, so it really just depends on your fitness and weight.
***** Right exactly! If granny gears are good enough for Contador, why should we all try and grind? Personal preference obviously, but the top climbers are all keeping their cadence well above 80 on the big climbs and running compacts.
Robin Chen probably, although he's got a whole suitcase full of excuses that he carries around with him so if he hadn't had the aero bike it wouldn't have been a problem.
The ONLY good thing about a climb long or short is that eventually its going to be all down hill. You guy should come do the Col de la Lombarde. Starts from Isola, France to the border of Italy. The views are stunning and its an HC climb.
Obvious too that this climb uses the same ride but with different commentary, shots and editing as the prevue show of this years tour stage that went over the Tourmalet - give away being all the camper vans.....
Hi, the tracks used were: Quark - Point of seeing: gcn.eu/1m7SwZQ Maribou state - Larks rise: gcn.eu/1pspxys Pete and the pirates - Blood gets thin: gcn.eu/1APXnjO
Dan is always passing random cyclists on these videos, like a boss.
Yeah but they were double his age! They must have been 98. You do the maths !
well he was on the cervelo test team you know HAHA
Epic Climbs are some of the best content on TH-cam! Thanks GCN.
We need more epic climbs videos!
looks brutal! Dan showing he is an absolute bossman still!!!!
Went up this mountain with my dad when I was 15, one of my biggest ever achievements :p
I did this climb in July this year during the Etape du tour. It was super tough but the descent in the freezing rain was even harder!
Yeah that was not a fun climb.
Yep agreed, you know you are cold when you throw hot tea over yourself with the involuntary shivering
My bucket list just keeps getting bigger
I've done this side of the Tourmalet 3 times this year, twice combined with the mythical Luz Ardiden. Great days on the bike ❤
I'm looking back at 2020 and, I would just say: "perfectly passable" ;)
Stayed in La Mongie this year to watch the Tour come through and it is so hard to breathe just normally when you're not accustomised to it, can't imagine having to cycle it!
Fantastic effort by Dan and the camera work was exceptional...good work and kudos to the team too :)
We need one of these videos every day... GREAT VIDEOS!
Looks beautiful. What a reward that descent must be. Great video!
You guys should do one of these on Mt. Evans in Colorado.
Loving the epic climb series!
Looking forward to the climb of the Ventoux, it seems like an "easier" climb than the first 2 you guys did. I think that if I start somewhere in the Alps en Pyrenees, I'ld be on the Ventoux and come back next year for the Tourmalet and Alpe d'Huez.
Good to see Cadel Evans taking in a spot of sight seeing and getting his picture taken at the top! Allez Cadel!! ;)
Love these epic climb videos, keep em coming.
I love looking back and seeing what iv'e rode.
Love this series! Really inspirational stuff.
I love this show! Well done.
I love it how Dan passes the other cyclists while talking a bit to the camera HAHA :D at 03:34
Please just keep using these amazing tunes you're using.
Looks awesome! Thanks for the footage
Didn't have the same problem on the lower slopes on this years étape du tour - because it was pi**ing down so hard you couldn't see to far ahead......
Froome shouldn't have any issue on this climb on valley roads. He rarely looks up to see what's ahead anyway!
Hi Guys,
I've been watching your videos for a while and noticed you're lucky enough to ride tons of different bike! Please could you do a video showing your vast array of bikes?
wow you have great music on these vids!
Love that subtle humor 'bread' euh... I main "Pain" of course.
I love this video and I'm actively working on being able to climb effectively. France is definitely on the list of places I'd love to ride. Any epic rides in the US? The ride up the Mt. such a beautiful brutal climb, id love the opportunity to climb it
cheers
Another great video! There's a small typo in the description though: "so went sent..." should be "so we sent" :)
Bring this back please
bucket list ride
I did this in the etape this year and the weather was terrible! I also rode up on a 39 chainring, so yeah, painful.
another awesome climb video. very cool.
yoan Sebastiano
Beautiful!
I wish you guys could come over to Malaysia and try the Genting Highlands climb and give it a review. :)
Team BR Esportes met Daniel Lloyd all over the climb, we were wearing green and yellow!
Such beauty
Please also make a video of de Col de la Croix de Fer and start at the Alpe d'Huez side.
anybody got the titles of the music used in this video? (apologies if it is already here and i have just missed it). The guys at GCN are normally pretty good at linking them in the "About" section, but they seem to not be there.
Keep climbing Dan! Envy your climbing ability.
I'll chase up the music tomorrow and pop it in the description for you :-)
Those tracks are now in the description for you, but they are:

Awesome you guys rock :D
Pain announced from the start ;) thanks to french bread
Are you going to shoot an episode at Col du Galibier?
Hi guys, awesome channel but wondered would it be possible to get a vid on how best to train to tackle a climb like this or Ventoux if you don't have access to these kind of climbs at home?
Like this one? How To Train For Mountains If You Don't Live Near Any :-)
Perfect, thanks and keep up the great work!
amazing video, keep it up!
Next you should do L'Angliru!

Great video. What's the music?
Ok, thats it, im away to buy a new S3 now, going back on the bike in the morning after 4 years off, shred a few stone, France in april/may 2015.
I always wondered what the presenter of krypton factor did after he left the show!!!
Great video as always. But I do have to scoff a little bit at the 1500m comment. I live at 2500m and that's where I start my climbs. :) A ride at 1500m would be full of O2! Eventually you should show off some of our epic Colorado, USA climbs.
yeah my climbs start at 2200m but nevertheless anything around or above the 1500m is hard if ur putting in a hard effort
what gears were you running on the S3 Dan?
You guys should make a video on how to be as beast as dan
I climbed the luz saint saveur side in 1hr48 and I'm 15. Is that any good?
Yep! I (James) did it that way a couple of weeks ago and did it in about the same time. I'm 37 though so you're a bit younger (and probably fitter) than me :-)
Which was tougher Dan, this or Alpe D'Huez?
Did it last week. 1:08 with a compact crankset. Got my bike stolen 2 days later. Whatever.
Little extra tip for one-ride-a-week cyclists:
Dutch Corner does not look very Dutch if you don't make that climb on a rest day, but it's a church, cemetary and rest area called Saint Ferreol, and the last place before l'Alpe where you can refill your water bottles.

What was the gear used for this climb!!?? perhaps 50/34 - 28/11 ?
I doubt Dan was using a compact
am on a 16 speed Chris Boardman road bike is there any tips that I should know when I go out on my bike over small hills/climbs. I am newbie to road bikes
Alex Lock Keep pedalling.
How many teeth does your largest back ring have?
And likewise smallest front ring ?
nice music
What is Dans favourite bike of the ones he owns?
Can you guys ride up it on a Fat Bike and report back to me how long it takes?
HOURS... Not that we've tried, but it takes long enough on a road bike!
2016 TdF Stage 8!
stelvio video soon ?
Can you mountain bike up that grass hill between the trees at 0:57 ?
haha, not me, but, id give it a whirl
It is possible but it's very difficult
then, id definitely give it a whirl, if i was ever so lucky to be there
+indobleh Matt did it..
What about riding from the other direction? :)
Kind of hard to fathom 9 or so % grades for so many kms!
Is it impossible to get up these climbs using a standard chainset?
Well, Dan had a standard 39-53 chainset on, so it's not impossible, but he did say that he struggled and would have preferred to be using a compact. The pro's will race up on standard gearing, so it really just depends on your fitness and weight.
Pretty sure Contador is not shy about using a compact. Make of that what you will.
***** Right exactly! If granny gears are good enough for Contador, why should we all try and grind? Personal preference obviously, but the top climbers are all keeping their cadence well above 80 on the big climbs and running compacts.
davidmuful For the Vuelta he had the mechanics put on an MTB set up to tackle the hideous 25/30 % climbs
What was Dan's time
Climbed it this summer, I’m only 13 :)
did he choose the aero S3 so he can use the Top 10 Cycling Excuses For Climbing?
Robin Chen probably, although he's got a whole suitcase full of excuses that he carries around with him so if he hadn't had the aero bike it wouldn't have been a problem.
+Robin Chen Have YOU ever ridden that road?
"Less oxygen" ... Welllll, less oxygen to breathe. There is the same amount of oxygen.
The ONLY good thing about a climb long or short is that eventually its going to be all down hill. You guy should come do the Col de la Lombarde. Starts from Isola, France to the border of Italy. The views are stunning and its an HC climb.
whats the name of the song at 2:50s?
If someone could let me know what song starts from about 2:35 I'd appreciate it.
Pete & The Pirates - Blood Gets Thin
Obvious too that this climb uses the same ride but with different commentary, shots and editing as the prevue show of this years tour stage that went over the Tourmalet - give away being all the camper vans.....
MUSIC ?!?!?!
which one ... i mean you really cant put 1 and 1 together?
Hi, the tracks used were:
Quark - Point of seeing: gcn.eu/1m7SwZQ
Maribou state - Larks rise: gcn.eu/1pspxys
Pete and the pirates - Blood gets thin: gcn.eu/1APXnjO
What was the first song with the MLK speech?
Marco Pantani will always be the best climber

Does someone know the title of the song at 2:36?
+losFondos pete and the pirates blood gets thin
Thanks mate! Really cool song
whats the song at 2:39???
I'm also interested in this!
Magor Bárócz Pete & The Pirates - Blood Gets Thin
Climbing is hardcore but I hate it myself (because of the physique required I guess).
Well, a fantastic Climb. However, come to the USA and try Mt. Greylock or Equinox and see what climbing is all about.
3:35 I'd hate to be overtaken by someone able to keep talking to camera like that.
try getting effortlessly passed by a teenage girl on her way to work at la mongie
Under 301
Can a kid do it
We think anyone can do it given enough time! Make sure you're fit and healthy and do some training ahead of time and you should be fine.
Polacy są wszędzie nawet na szczycie
Come on Dan, my nan can cycle up the hill faster than you 😂
Embarrasing person award goes to that bloke (and his wife) @ 4.20...
Otherwise - can't ya tell Dan's an ex-pro...! you can just see the experience.
