In this series I make a roadtrip in the Atacama desert with Frank to discover its rich industrial past. In this episode we explore abandoned tanks in the desert, located on a target range. Here you can find the M51 and M60 Sherman tank.

I don't watch anything on YT until the moment I see it freely again, without ads. I'm also a content creator, so I offer for viewing materials in which the ads placed by them bring you to those who is paid, money. I ended up not can I watch my own content without being forced to support ads? Shame on YT, shame on them. Epic failure 🙃Sorrrrry!!
A friend of mine and me found a Sherman in the Tunesisn desert in 1979 during a light sand storm. He moved forewards to that tank when I discovered that one of the tracks was destroyed. I yelled to him to stop, in that moment he stepped on an old German mine and died within 15 minutes. He died in the middle of a large mine field. We were both 17 at that time.

Live ordinance was a constant danger in Europe for many years after WWII.
@@hindflight WW I ordnance is still a problem in France as is WW II ordnance all over Europe.
Wow, some of these M51s definitely deserve to be in a museum.
I know at least a couple museum/private ones are in great condition and operate. There definitely needs to be an M60 sherman saved too
Having served on tanks in the USA these are as follow, the M4 Sherman, M51 Super Sherman, M60 Patton.
Bones in the desert, metal bones, rusting and broken,
old Warriors slain and slain again,
rust like blood running from their many wounds.
"I still serve!"
The war of their birth long over, the war of their rebirth, long over,
new wars and duty, new purpose and new crews
forged in the fires, forged again and again.

That was a cement mixer, not a plane.
Usually there is live unexploded ordinace on firing ranges.
Back when the US had a range in Libya there was a sandstorm that uncovered a line of German tanks just long enough to be seen and then covered them up again.
Something like inshore ship wrecks, storms uncovered them and the next storm covers them up again.
I spent a dozen years in Libya, in Tripoli. Heard this story many, many times, but nobody was never able to say where this convoy was approximately located. Unfortunately, seems it's just a nice legend.
Libyan wrecks from WWII are well located by now and not so numerous. Before oil was discovered in the country, export of WWII wrecks was the only way to get some incomes for Libya, with grapes from vineyards left from the former Italian colony. I met in Benghazi one guy that was when young helping his father to recover wrecks in the desert. He said it was a very dangerous job with remaining mine fields and unexploded ordnance. Most of the minefield are still there, well documented. When an oil company wants to get seismic done, they get to clear the place before to proceed.
All the desert was methodically screened for years, this is why there are so few memories of this war, except for some war cemeteries in very poor shape.
Man, this place makes the Mojave Desert look lush by comparison.
These were definitely Israeli Super Sherman's, the counter weight at the back of the turret indicates that.
Neat! Crazy that Sherman tanks were still in active service up into the early 2000's. Looks like the scrappers have also been cutting pieces of the tanks, such a shame. Nice explore, enjoyed watching!

Thats not a plane. The text on it says "SSAB Oxelösund", its a steel plant in Sweden that specialises in hardened steels like Hardox and Armox, used for truck beds, excavator buckets and aurmoured vehicles. Its probably a target made to look like a plane, but last a long time on the range

whilst it's great fun and interesting to see these from a respectful distance, I really wouldn't be climbing inside these wrecks. You have no way of knowing what contamination could be present

Cooking and ingesting food on those tanks could be tricky. I can only assume that the tanks were covered in lead dust from the rounds fired at them, and/or chemicals as a result of the subsequent fires.
Worst case scenario, they used depleted uranium shells on them, which transferred to the tanks on impact, then to your hands when you climbed on them, and then when you ate your food.
I’m sure it would have dissipated by now…..

The M60 you mean, in reallty is a M50, was never put into service in Chile, it remained at the prototype stage, and the prototype is in the Museo de Tanques del Arma Caballeria Blindada, Iquique (Chile).
Chile only used M51s equipped with French 105 mm guns

Infinitely better than using an American car though. At least a Chinese car won’t spring apart like a clown’s car/anything made in the U.S.

We were on exercise up in Meaford and a friend of mine climbed into a range hulk. Came flying out in a real hurry. Seems there was a giant hornet's nest inside that he landed on. LOL

It’s not a regular M60… “The Chilean M-60 Sherman is a 'modification of a modification' of one of the most versatile tanks ever built, the American M4 Sherman. These Shermans had already been owned, upgraded and operated by the Israelis, who then sold them to Chile in the early 1980s”

You are definitely not a tank guy, and should spend more time before talking about a subject, YOU obviously no nothing about ! THEY NEVER MADE AN M60 SHERMAN TANT! The original M60 was a modernized variant of the M48 Patton Main Battle Tank. Note it began initial service in 1960 and was used by the Marine corps until 1991. Please don't confuse an M60 with an M4 Sherman or the Israeli variant M51. You're really doing the public in general a disservice with information like this.
