- Nile Rodgers is known as one of the most decorated musicians in the history of music, with his name appearing in the credits of countless smash hits. And when Rodgers needs to pick a signature tool of his trade, it is always his trademark 1960 Stratocaster with a 1959 neck -- otherwise known at the "Hitmaker."
To celebrate a limited run of Nile Rodgers Tribute Hitmakers from the Fender Custom Shop, Fender caught up with Rodgers to talk about his storied career, including his band Chic and the production of David Bowie's iconic album "Let's Dance."

Nope. It’s the combo. He would sound great on any guitar but a specific guitar for a specific job can give it that extra bit of magic. But you will never get to that level, judging your comment.

Nile is an absolute studio session LEGEND. It always blew me away how he got such a fat sound out of such thin strings. It's all in the hands. He was playing through a simple fender tube amp and it sounded exactly like Nile.
He usually plugged straight into the board direct instead of an amp One of the reasons

Nile was my idol and i did not even realize it until recently. When i was a kid i bought la freak 45, and wore that damn thing out. And lets dance was the greatest song of the 80s in my mind, and never knew Nile Rogers was the guy behind these tunes.
The secret is the Gibson knobs. But Fender would never admit it.

Nile is the man. They key to any hit maker from Fender is putting those 1950s les Paul knobs on it. Thats where it gets its soul.

Again what was a normal strat at one point will now be recreated in the custom shop and sold for an obscene price.

Actually...Niles´s guitar is made of a special wood, which I don´t remember. It is not Alder, or Ash, or Basswood, or Poplar, or Agathis. He bought it at a pawnshop in Miami in 1980. Later it was found out that it was custom made for someone.
But yeah, you´re right: all those expensive custon shops are recreations of off the rack guitars. So what do they reproduce? The dings and "mojo" of the artist that made them famous. Some ppl would pay for that. There are a few that I would buy if I could: Jimmy Page´s Les Paul, for instance, with all the dings and scratches made by the man himself. Is like having the guy in the living room with you.
@@fernandoreynaaguilar1438 not specially made, it's an alder 1960 hard tail body, and thin 59 maple neck. It's been modded over the years with high mass tuning machines, and the chromed brass pickguard. Other then the mods it's a normal strat. In fact many would say a strat is not normal until its modded.
@@30smsuperstrat Niles bought it at a Pawnshop in miami. He spent the subsequent years trying to find a strat that would replicate its sound, but he never could find any. Finally, he brought it to Fender, and after extensive research they concluded that the previous owner "must" have bought it from the custom shop and he specified an uncommon wood (I don`t remember what type of wood) Source: Guitar World Magazine..date? I think 2006, or 2007, I guess, I have it around somewhere...
@@fernandoreynaaguilar1438 some information has him buying that guitar as early as 1972. He used it with chic as early as 1977. That's all documented as part of the guitars billions of dollars of business. Fender custom shop was founded in 1987. You can reference everything I've said on Fender's website under Nile Rodgers hitmaker, and Fender Custom Shop. Including that it's a 1960 hardtail body and 1959 thin neck, that has been modified with high mass tuning machines and a chromed brass pickguard. The "Replicas" are made in the custom shop with alder bodies and maple necks. The custom shop doesnt spend time researching and using cnc computers to measure a famous vintage instrument to make it different.
There is nothing special about that Strat. Niles is just an amazing songwriter. There, I said it.
Only thing special about it is that batch of alder was grown on the side of a mountain instead of at sea level which makes it much lighter when it dries Was a one time non delivery shipment instead of the usual delivery shipment
Nothing sounds like a Fender Stratocaster, each has their own unique sound & character. but in the hands of an accomplished guitarist, it's a beast. "Just open the Guitar case and throw in a steak." I love and own a Strat. Jimi Hendrix; Richie Blackmore, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, David Gilmour, Eric Johnson and Buddy Holly all played Stratocasters. Niles loved its clean, rich tone that allowed him to be crisp but not brittle.

Can you imagine trying to get this sound on a Gibson or Rickenbacker? No, it's the man AND the guitar.
It has to do with any typical Strat. You don't have to buy this specific one to sound like him.

What a gift Nile Rodgers. Seeing the influence of black people on popular music is just mind boggling!
Why you bringing race into it? If anything though it shouldn't be surprising because without black people in the American south there would be no blues, and therefore no rock n roll and probably other genres like jazz and metal would either not exist or be fundamentally different.
However don't you think it's more about culture than literal skin colour in this case? I didn't know epidermis melanin content was relevant to musical talent in any way.

It would be nice to have an option for those of us who aren't doctors or lawyers. It wouldn't even have to be a signature model - I'd be thrilled with just a standard hardtail Strat.

Oh my god, i purchased a Buddy Guy signature stratocaster to learn r'n'b and funk style, and i didn't know anything about neck profiles, but now i recognized, that Nile Rodgers' strat has same fingerboard radius like Buddy Guy strat...

He says his Strat the Hitmaker's body is thinner than Strats are normally. It is part of his tone. If that is the case he should buy a Squier Strat because those bodies are thinner than the Fender branded Strats.

The right guitar fits just right in the hands of the right player, and that sound comes out…
Alex Lifeson has his famous Telecaster used on all Rush records, and Eric Clapton only really bonded with that one Bluesbreaders Les Paul that were stolen, while Stevie Ray Vaughan had his famous number one Stratocaster which was only really that amazing in his own hands… And so on.
I think the one guy who really treated guitars as disposable was Jimi Hendrix, and he still did stick to late 60s CBS maple cap Stratocasters and one or two became very iconic.

Anyone know what string gauge Nile uses? I'm thinking at least 10s maybe 11s? I use 9s but they lack the "clunky", "chucky" sound that makes Nile's rhythm playing legendary and unsurpassable.
And what pick?
09-042 strings and thin 0,44" picks
Look up mc68 pickups.
Just make sure the strings are thick enough that you're able to mute them rather than automatically playing them whenever you touch the string even lightly.

I hate to pick holes. I love Nile, I really do but get lucky wasn't played on that strat. He used his plexiglass strat as mentioned in a recent interview in guitarist magazine.

Just play clean or even direct to line with the neck pickup of a Strat.
Rhythm guitar is the best. Lead guitar is flashy, but lacks depth. Lead guitar is almost like a distraction.

I would, unquestionably pay whatever you're charging if you were building these with old, light chunks of wood. Otherwise, it's just another new strat.
I don't question the craftsmanship at all, but the wood just isn't there. There's nothing like a good 50s-60s Strat. They just sound fundamentally different.

That's not true at all, it may be one of them, but not the most famous.
TheTroll Mastah James Jamerson's "Funk Machine" P Bass played on waaaayyy more hits.
I don't think this guy is even up there with the greats (Les Paul, Jimmy Page, Hendrix, etc) but to say that about your own product is stupid. (Fender over-exaggerates a lot of the things they say about their guitars)
Well he's a session musician so it's a little different than the guys already well known through bands, but I'm just talking about the volume of "hits" he played on. Obviously a lot and certainly nothing to be sneezed at, but James and his "Funk Machine" like I was saying played on pretty much everything out of Motown records, and the group of session musicians doing all the recordings, "The Funk Brothers" claim to fame is they played on more number 1 hits than the Beatles, the Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and Elvis combined. James and his cohorts never even got credit on an album sleeve or any royalties, let alone a signature instrument. However, it should probably be said that the fact that James' P Bass was a 62 probably had a lot in saying that the American Vintage P Basses were 62 models, and Fender first started manufacturing those right before James died, but not before his actual bass was stolen. It's a crying shame.

ollyworld sometimes you have to follow your mind and heart and accomplish great things in a simple way. Complicating things doesn't necessarily improve anything. Some play guitar in various ways some doesn't. Nile made hits that no one could've.
he also is a producer and a former jazz player. but this rhythm style is what was required for these songs.
so it takes some control to not overplay. I would be saying what your saying too if I did not understand it this way.
I've seen Yngvie play "Far beyond the sun" back in 85 twelve feet away from me at Lamours in Brooklyn. his style was amazing but to me got old real fast. Sorry Mr. Malmsteen, you are great but not my taste.
