There is such a glaring historical gap between the quaint vintage 1920s footage and the hip compassionate modern stuff. I'm very happy for the deaf blind community getting such great care today, but it makes me sad that the Oberlinhaus victims of Nazi atrocities are ignored.
Quality of life is in the eyes of the beholder. For those who were not born deafblind but acquired it later in life, things are different because for some in that category, their enjoyment comes from seeing and or hearing. Some people adapt while others don't. For those who don't, a story like this or anything else found on line about deafblindness can be perceived as meaningless, imposing on them or insulting. Nothing wrong with this documentary. Simply pointing out another side to this.
Very interesting documentary. I was always very sad about disabled people, and still am, but this made me feel better to see how many things they can still do even with their disabilities. We should do more as a society for them.
Amazing stories of strength amongst all those parents! What a wonderful organization and initiative. Little Tonya is adorable too :) Thank you for sharing this. I was searching for information on how children that are born deaf-blind are provided care and education and thats exactly what this video provided :) Cheers!
Imagine being blind, or deaf, or even both. Would you like being called disabled, handicapped, or impaired. I am sure the "impaired" people see themselves to be normal. Everyone is different and unique in some way. Their "disability" is a part of them, it characterizes who they are. they aren't broken, they're normal.
The problem is that these new children are becoming intellectually disabled, unlike the blind-deaf children of the past and that's a huge warning sign, because it is an increasing problem and its not due to better diagnosis. This is a problem that needs to be resolved. If someone is blind and deaf and wishes to see or hear, though, despite having healthy and stable environments and love and contact with a supportive family and community, then that should be their right.
Interesting question. I looked up Oberlin House on the internet and all that I could find was that some of the buildings were damaged by bombs. And Hertha Schulz, who they talk about as their first deafblind student, died after the war. So maybe they managed to be left alone by the Nazi eugenics program, unless they just don't want to talk about it on their website.
+beany118118 There was a deaf blind kid once doing weird movements and making weird sounds and I thought he was been smart and hitting on my girlfriend, so i bashed him and made him a quad! So yes there is definitely one wheeling around out there :)
*How could anyone find the reason for anything being born deaf a blind? Something so normal as getting a haircut would probably freak them out. I've always wondered what they see when they dream*
How do you know that he licked it? Just because it's smaller? I didn't see him licking it. Maybe those are their small scoops and that's what she chose.
A person born without a sense feels just as normal as a person who has all five, yes they are loved, now who's to say that we are not all missing other senses?
Well, she was playing the guitar right in front of the kid, so the kid could feel the vibrations as well as use her residual hearing/vision to sense what's going on.
often deaf and blind doesn't mean completely deaf or blind.. some can see shadows or depth of darkness as well as hearing some sound. nothing that we would think of as hearing or seeing but still something. the vibrations are also helpful in communication and understanding the world around them.
A disability is in no way an insult. It is a diagnosis. And this is coming from someone with several mental disabilities. The r word is offensive, disabled isn't
Very difficult life but great to see good people doing things to help those in need.

One less sense is 4 stronger senses 2 less senses is 3 stronger senses and a living angel from god.

Stop messing with language! "Disabled" is the word, end of story.
*Waking up one day like this would be my worst nightmare*
if you were born deaf and blind, you wouldn't even know that anyone else was different. you wouldn't even know what your existence even was.
Beautiful all of it 🌏✌❤
Fantastic Narrator - very informative video

Closed captions is really bad.
+Dinah Estes Closed caption on DW's videos is provided automatically by TH-cam, not by us.
+DW (English) You can upload your own. Considering the topic, it'd be a good idea.
Are you going to do it?

Rip my ears
So...Tonja has cerebreal palsy?
Yes
This alone is the greatest single proof there could never exist a god for he would be the cruelest and meanest bastard around!
You'd like a perfect world wouldn't you? Imagine a world where we're all the same. Lame.
god doesn't interfere with our lives

@@jurnagin ❤️🙌🏻 🙌🏻 x Well put. Thanks.
@@clairee4939 I think about scientist wondering if there's other life in universe, if we only had more senses! Jesus may indeed be the sun!
Ohm my god .. dog help and bless them
Dog ? 😂
would you rather be deaf or blind?
deaf
Deaf 100%, why would anyone pick blind?
i dont know, but ive seen comments where people said they would rather be blind
blind 100% , just imagine never hearing a thing,
deaf all the way. beautiful language, amazing culture, community and people
7:14 i hardly see the point in talking to her or playing the guitar to her because shes deaf

IDK... sing language?? Lol
I'm sorry, Just because someone is Deaf Blind doesn't mean there disabled. There just normal human beings! :)
I know your intentions are well. Seriously though. Deaf and blind. That is definitely disabled.
No, normal humans can hear and see. They are disabled.

well how the fuck are they normal if they can't do shit and don't know what shit is
