It funny how people my age tell me how growing up they were not allowed to watch The Simpsons yet the same people let their children watch Family Guy 😑
My brother and I were shown The Simpsons and Futurama as toddlers (on the average, 4 to 5 years old), since they were the least perverted adult-animated shows out there and Dad wanted to pass it down to us. I remember doing away with those classic DVD box sets on many car road trips and at home; I even saw the movie when it first came out - one of few PG-13 movies I had the privilege of seeing as a 7-year old. I still go back to it occasionally, because of how well it holds up and mostly for my autistic friend, Scott, who likes to script lines from those shows, amongst other TH-camrs. I don’t really watch The Simpsons anymore, other than just these occasional Halloween specials and maybe some clips online.
I believe that the Halloween specials were moved to November because they didn't want to interfere with the sporting events that Fox showed on Sunday Nights. Baseball and Football, with their useless post-shows, tend to run over, which means audiences on the East Coast would end up missing the new shows while those on the West Coast could watch them.
You know, I also wasn’t allowed to watch The Simpsons either as a kid. I’m 23 now, but I can’t imagine watching so many seasons & episodes of The Simpsons since it’s still going on to this day. I can see why you think Treehouse of Horror died after five years. It’s a pretty interesting video and Halloween is one of my favorite holidays.
I'm sure you've heard this before but, the show is definitely deserving of a watch and the best viewing order is watching seasons 2-11 or 4-8. 2-11 is if you want to fully invest in the show and it's characters since seasons 2 and 3 have some amazing character specific episodes that genuinely enrich the show as well as behind the laughter being a great send-off to the show, a faux finale if you will. 4-8, however, is the golden age and when simpsons truly became the cultural touchstone and changed comedy forever. Before Marge vs the monorail, the Simpsons was viewed moreso as a novelty and a curiosity piece. After Marge vs the monorail it became one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, rivaled only by Seinfeld.
Last year's episode as well as the IT parody were really good. I would put ToH 28 as one of the top episodes next to ToH V and VI. Its basically hit or miss now. I think the problem is either trying to do three separate stories each year and/or not making the episode an hour because trying to fit three stories in a half hour is sometimes impossible.
Two Halloween segments in particular that I saw that made me go, “What the f**k is this s**t!?” we’re the ones where Homer is paralysed and can only communicate by farting and the one where Homer was the Cat in the Hat. Those were just awful.
Honestly certain segments are better than others like Sideshow Bob finally killing Bart, so it’s not necessarily dead IMO. Just a casualty of the show itself, and much like that segment every Sideshow Bob episode is my favorite which also breathes new life into The Simpsons each time. Another favorite modern segment is the Peanuts parody from a few years ago. As a fan of said franchise it’s always fun to see more references in pop culture but I actually watched more of the modern ones in reruns and then each annual Treehouse Of Horror. I got to the ones that I saw on tv not knowing I already saw them and even though I didn’t know what they were I hated them.
They died when Lisa somehow magically managed to kidnap Bart Milhouse and Nelson. Two of which are really strong boys and one who is mid level strong and needs his doggie teddy bear.
Since FOX shows the Baseball playoffs in October, many shows get pre-empted in October including The Simpsons. As a result, the Treehouse of Horror doesn't air until November
Ah thanks for the context on that. I got out of the habit of following baseball way back in the day during the strike of the '90s so I wasn't aware of how much MLB could alter their scheduling.
Season 23's *Treehouse Of Horror XXII* was the last one to have more than 8 million viewers, as well. That aired on October 30th, 2011. It's never had as many viewers as that since.
I feel like they dropped in quality when the violence stopped due to sensitivity. Before we had blood and cartoon gore. Now we have a limb popping off with no show of detail and brief halloween references.
You're right in that the "Treehouse of Horror Episode 6" (from 1995) is probably the "should've ended it here" moment. I remember that last segment with the computer graphic Homer Simpson, that was an iconic episode. The series as a whole probably should've ended after 1997, but yeah, this was the last great "Treehouse of Horror" episode. I stopped watching "The Simpsons" after 2000 (I was finishing up college by that point and I would eventually start watching Adult Swim, Family Guy, Futurama, etc). Skip ahead a few years, and I distinctly remember catching "Treehouse of Horror Episode 20" in 2009, as that was around the time I started taking my own kids trick or treating for the first time, and I was flipping channels and amazed to find they were still doing "Treehouse of Horror" episodes. So I remember that one, that was kind of a nice memory. But it really should've ended after that.
When they ditched the wrap around story that was a let down but moving it to November was the death blow for me and the point where it died. Would rather see it late September than early November. That decision still baffles me.
my mom loved the raven short we had like the whole second season taped and she would always ask to watch that one and said she wished that they would make more epsiodes like that
Season V was introduced in a way akin to Night Gallery, by Twilight Zone's Rod Serling. Homer³ is also based on a Twilight Zone episode: Little Girl Lost.
Same thing, if occasionally these filler Halloween episodes. And should they ever produce the long awaited sequel, I think it’s best if they save that as the true series finale - if they do something truly amazing with it.
for me it ended when they did the jerry springer show bit, and i personally stopped caring after the board games became real. most favorite is the peanuts parody. every time i watch it i quote the lines almost word for word.
Sorry to disagree, but I actually like the episodes KING HOMER and ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT EYESORES, since I'm a fan of giant monsters they felt like my kind of jam. I never cared if they felt scary or not, I just enjoy the heck out of them personally.
I grew up with the Simpsons and i was buying the dvd season sets until they stopped selling them at season 20. Havent seen an episode since. I know i can watch on fx but i think they have run their course and should all retire.
Yeah it hasn't had that Halloween vibe in a long time ..However THOH ep 33 really surprised me.. It was very different but had that old Halloween feel to it the older season used to have... and all the stories were on point...
For me, it stopped being good after TOH 10. Since then, I just tune in with a straight face like...😐'ok, then what's next?' It was just like...meh.🤷🏽♀️ "Not It" is an acceptable segment that got me shook. The suspense, the twist & turns were A+.
To me the Treehouse or horror stopped being perfect around season 19. Number 19 had only one segment I liked. After that the Treehouse of Horror lost their magic and perfection. Although i liked that segment where Bart became Barty Ziff, and the Del Toro opening and Fat in the Hat segment. But thats about it.
If there’s one movie, I am curious to the bone that I got a learn some incredible facts it’s Glenn Close 101 dalmatians if she got any stuff in her eyes while filming and then 102 dalmatians cause I wonder how long Close held her breath in the cake mix
Well, some episodes have been rated TV-14, in which case parents are strongly cautioned against allowing children under the age of 14 to watch. Still, the show has been credited for its slyly inappropriate or complex jokes that are not easily understood by younger audiences. I wasn’t allowed to watch The Simpsons as a kid either. In fact, most kids can’t watch them.
@@julianloht9651 Really ? I grew up in the 80's/90's. I remember being so excited that the Simpsons were going to play in french, watched the show most of my life...
attack of the 50 foot eyesores ( references Godzilla, a MONSTER MOVIE, which is part of horror and yes, sci fi. attack of the 50 foot woman and more) is great as is Homer 3 ( a classic segment). sci fi has much to do with horror, Frankenstein is SCI FI/HORROR.
Thank you for putting this into words. I actually have been doing the same thing, watching all the Treehouse of Horror episodes, and I did notice a dip in quality after the point you mentioned. At first I thought maybe it was me and was just the nostalgia factor, because I hadn't watched any after that point when I was younger, but no you're right. There is definitely an intention to make them less scary and involve broader themes.
i stopped enjoying them when they werent really gorey i mean sure theres gore here and there but theres hardly any blood and when it is gorey they try to minimize it as best as possible i know its a different era and times have changed
While I understand your reasoning, I can't agree with your death date. There were waaaay too many great episodes after this to call it at season 7. Even if they were less halloween themed they were always extremely dark which to me is more the trademark of these episodes. By which I mean killing off various main characters in often times gruesome ways, dark endings like the world ending, stuff like that. I personally would call it at the Great Pumpkin parody. To me that was the last great episode in the Treehouse of Horror franchise that really captures what the show is about.
The Simpsons was my favorite show at one time. I had all the merch and watched every single week. This was a good analysis. My personal favorite Treehouse of Horror was V because they had the strongest stories. Even the Chorus Line gag at the end was hilarious. But definitely, after the 5th installment, it had a totally different feel. So saying the 6th one was when it died is spot on. There were a couple of exceptions like the I Know What You Did Last Summer, Jack the Ripper, and Great Pumpkin parodies, but overall, it did change. Good video.
I think if it's scary it can be counted as Halloween because even if it's not based on Halloween, Halloween is based on creeping you out. I was a kid when the Y2K episode dropped and while it didn't overly scare me there were 2 moments that did scare me. First one is a bit weak as idk why this scared me but it did was the scene where Nelson was photocopying his butt and gets sucked into the copy machine, the idea of that happening scared me 😂 the second was the ending with Bart and Homer ejecting themselves from their ship, seeing their heads expand and popping off screen. I think the newer years fall flat because it's clean and bright, if they stylized it and stepped away from the Simpsons humor it can actually get good again.
It funny how people my age tell me how growing up they were not allowed to watch The Simpsons yet the same people let their children watch Family Guy 😑

Fox started airing post-season baseball.
I also loved how Kang and Kodos got angry at Fox for airing their Halloween episodes in November.

This show is way past it's prime
I mean it has its gems every now and then but those are rare in my opinion
I thought the thanksgiving one was good. Vid disqualified it lol.
The movie was the perfect ending for me
