- L'Orchestre national de France dirigé par Emmanuel Krivine joue Harold en Italie, symphonie en quatre parties composée par Hector Berlioz. Soliste : Nicolas Bône, alto.

Saint-Pétersbourg, 8 février 1868 : Berlioz monte au pupitre pour la dernière fois. Au programme, notamment, Harold en Italie. L’œuvre produit un tel effet que Balakirev, quelques mois plus tard, soumet au compositeur le plan d’une nouvelle symphonie d’après Byron, inspirée de Manfred. Mais c’est Tchaïkovski, en 1885, qui reprendra l’idée et composera cette œuvre.
Harold en Italie est la deuxième des quatre symphonies de Berlioz. Composée et créée en 1834, elle naît à une époque où le compositeur a l’imagination enflammée par ses souvenirs italiens. Certes, il a vécu comme un exil son départ obligatoire pour la Villa Médicis (prix de Rome oblige !) ; certes, il s’est ennuyé dans le désert musical et sous le soleil de plomb de la Ville éternelle. Mais il a passé de longs jours à sillonner l’Italie sauvage, sa guitare dans une main, un fusil dans l’autre, jouissant de la compagnie des brigands et des pifferari (musiciens ambulants), retrouvant les processions et les chants de paysans qui avaient marqué son enfance dans le Dauphiné, découvrant avec émoi le Vésuve ou le tombeau de Virgile au mont Pausilippe. - เพลง

Belle interprétation d'une oeuvre malheureusement pas assez connue. L'art musical de Berlioz est unique, moi j'adore !
I got into Berlioz because I inherited as a boy a record of the story of Treasure Island from my older cousins and it used the Fantastic Symphony as its backing music. The sense of beauty and fear and dread in that symphony completely arrested me. I just felt I had to track down the whole symphony and hear it from beginning to end. Harold in Italy and the Requiem Mass were the pieces I heard next and I have also deeply enjoyed The Damnation of Faust and The Trojans and Romeo and Juliete and Te Deum. Berlioz is such a deeply special composer. His pieces give me new life. It was such a terrible shame he never saw and heard a full production of The Trojans before he died. Long live the spirit of Berlioz!
i had this same record i think!! It was a Disney record for children with pirates on the cover!
It's incomprehensible to me that there are still music lovers who don't fully appreciate or understand Berlioz. I was only around 14/15 when I first heard this work and was mesmerized by the extraordinary orchestration and melodies. A concert performance of Les Troyens around 5 years later convinced me that Berlioz was the ultimate musical genius and I've not changed this view since.
Utltimate genius is Debussy but Berlioz is great ! Vive la France !

Le 2ème mouvement est aérien. On entend la fusion de l'alto naître et s'élever. C'est un frisson de plaisir.
Juste magnifique, cette Marche des Pèlerins.
When you think that this work was written in 1834 (premiered only 10 years after Beethoven’s last symphony) it becomes obvious that Berlioz was the most extraordinary and visionary composer of all time. Overall, I think this is a great performance.

I had never seen a Viola Concerto though for a long time have been trying to see one. It so happens that Berlioz comes my way as much to say all is not lost!! Wonderful Concerto and enjoyed it. way
Anand, although the similarity with a Concerto is apparent, perhaps due to the work been originally appointed by Paganini, however, this work is regarded as a Symphony.
A mais delicada interpretação desta magnífica obra já ouvida, e a sonoridade da viola (alto), é igualmente delicada, particularidade do intérprete. Na verdade toda essa maravilha está na combinação que tem início no autor, na orquestra de altíssima qualidade que sucedeu a Orquestra do Conservatório de Paris, o violista, o regente, e Roma como palco dessa criação magnífica, vista diferencialmente por Berlioz!
Wunderschöne und spannende Aufführung dieses romantischen und perfekt komponierten Meisterwerks mit mildem Ton der genialen Solobratsche sowie gut harmonisierten und perfekt vereinigten Tönen anderer Instrumente. Der intelligente Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo und mit effektiv kontrollierter Dynamik. Wunderbar und atemberaubend zugleich!

I’ve watched a performance of this piece by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, The viola soloist appears on stage when it plays its solo and exit after the part, it was kindda amazing.
I've seen one where the viola player just rises from the orchestra, and then gets back to playing with his section again. That worked best for me, I think.

This is one of my favorites. Sweet but the viola sound is sad. Yes, this should be considered as a symphony, though it may look like a viola concerto at a glance.

magnifique interprétation .C'est un chef d'oeuvre de berlioz refusé par paganini mais qu'il finit par jouer car l'alto n'était pas son instrument
J'aime la direction de Emmanuel Krivine précise un peu rapide mais bien dynamique c'est excellent que trop lent , sinon ça risque de sombrer dans l'eau calme et boueuse... Emmanuel Krivine sait se risquer avec une oeuvre maitresse et redoutable , ce chef d'oeuvre intense de Berlioz, que Paganini avait des regrets de l'avoir refusé en tant qu'interprète de choix , que d'autres chefs dont je ne cite pas le nom évitent par faute d'excellence, hélas.
Lu dans les mémoires de Berlioz (je n'ai lu que le tome 1) . Paganini a refusé de la jouer car il y avait trop de pauses et pas assez de notes à jouer !
Ouvre refusée par Paganini lorsque Berlioz lui montra l'esquisse de l'ouvrage (Paganini souhaitait en fait un concerto pour alto). Mais lors d'un concert où l'œuvre fut exécutée Paganini était présent, celui ci fut tellement subjugué qu'il offrit un don de vingt milles francs à Berlioz ce qui lui permis d'être libéré des contraintes matérielles des se mettre à la composition de Roméo et Juliette, symphonie dédiée à Paganini

I haven't seen this physical set up of an orchestra before. Is it common?. (Cellos in front of and to the left of conductor, harp sort of mixed in with the orchestra, etc )
It's the common shape for all symphonic orchestras ! From the left to the right, you have the first violins, violas, celli, and second violins. Behind the second, you have the doublebass 😄 On the other hand, I'm not sure of the harp's place... (Here I think the conductor prefers this order, maybe for his music and his movements maybe ?)
Berlioz asks in the score that the harp be as close the viola solist as possible, which explains its odd placement here

Pour Berlioz, qui était très très très difficile et méprisait l'école italienne.
Ses idoles étaient Weber et Glück.
La marche des pèlerins est prise trop rapidement pour moi, mais cela reste une très belle interprétation :)

Qu'il regrettera, en l'écoutant de ne pas l'avoir accepté du compositeur.....
Berlioz a présenté seulement une ébauche du morceau à Paganini qui a refusé de la jouer car trop de pauses et pas assez de notes. Berlioz après a développé le morceau. C'est ce que j'ai lu dans le tome 1 des mémoires de Berlioz .

No, the conductor is equally as important as the soloist but yes it is very strange that the latter is not mentioned.

I liked it, but the best performance is by Colin Davis and Nobuko Imai
Why? Colin Davis was an outstanding conductor/champion of Berlioz but personally I think the performance here is the equal of the Davis/Imai recording and from a conducting perspective maybe even better.

Un Berlioz un peu à court d'inspiration ce qui le conduit parfois ( souvent ?) à faire du "Berlioz" ! Comme certaines de ses Ouvertures (les moins jouées) cela sonne souvent creux et est peu habité !
Heureusement que viendra après cette oeuvre l'opera Benvenuto Cellini ! ( Quand il s'agit de Berlioz je suis p-être trop exigeant !)
L'orchestre et le soliste sont excellenrs. Cette interprétation de Krivine est sans doute la meilleure possible !
