In general, 301 redirects work, but you need to be a little more careful with the execution. I recommend creating a dedicated landing page to "inherit" the backlinks (if most of the links are hitting the homepage). If the domain has backlinks hitting many different pages, then you'll need to create dedicated pages for supporting those backlinks. For example, I acquired a domain that had a bunch of backlinks going to old content about "Facebook marketing," so I created a dedicated page about "Facebook stats" and redirected those pages to it.
