The song itself really shows Peter Gabriel’s love of 1960s soul music (ala Motown. The video is extremely inventive, (the 80s were the decade of MTV and music videos from the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince and others). As for the lyrics of the song, (it’s just about sex and sexual innuendo). I mean come on, “open up your fruit cage where that fruit are as sweet as can be”
Grooving with Peter Gabriel, the Eurythmics, The Cars and the 80's Style all Started with the B52's Why don't You Dance with Me and Rock Lobster. Lennon saw that Opening Night and it got Him into Music Again.
Peter was such an odd cat and this video is perfect example of that. Those of us who listened to him in Genesis knew how weird he was. You should also do his video Big Time it’s similar to this video.
This is my most favourite video of all time. PG is one of my favourite artists too and for me, his peak was his solo career from the period mid-80s to mid-90s, including, of course, this classic. I love how the video symbolically begins and ends with depicting the start and end of life (fertilisation and embryo growth, then later PG sitting down in the chair to 'sleep' and then 'rising up' into the stars and waving goodbye), and continues the motif of reproduction and innuendo/imagery throughout, but also has hilarious visuals like the chicken dance, the vegetable face, and so on! Also, it was a clever choice to use stop motion and claymation rather than the CGI of the time (as used, for example, in Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" which was only a year before this song, but looks so dated in comparison). As a result, the only bit that looks dated is the section where PG and the dancing girls/crowd are, with clothes and hairstyles clearly of the 80s.
Best music video of all time?

Not only the best music video of the 80's, but a fantastic song! Peter Gabriel is a true music genius!
I still prefer the video for 'Take on Me' by A-Ha.
Agreed
What a song and what a beat, love it, takes me back, thank you guys ❤
"Shock the monkey" was also a good one!
Thank you for the video. The instrumentals are FIRE! One of the best songs ever!

We haven't reacted to Eurythmics, The Cars or B52's yet so u just gave us a great list to follow up on! Love those 80's bands!
Someone needs to buy this poor young woman a space heater.
Hi John & Lulu, the 1980s was a great time for Music

Crazy video, great Peter
Some of the hits I liked from him are shock the monkey, games without frontiers, and big time . And many more

Nobody expects the dancing chickens
Lulu is gorgeous wow....oh by the way love this video hidden gems in video
The meaning behind it all is the way babies are made. He REALLY wants to get with the woman.
Nice reaction. If you haven't done it, you should react to "Simply Irresistible" by Robert Palmer. Interested in Lulu's thoughts on that.
Hell yeah, mermories !!!!
This is the first animation Music video for MTV if I'm correct
I believe that goes to 'Take on Me' which came out at least a year earlier.
Must be cold or she got the message of the song 😂. One of those happened.
check him out live secret world concert
Yeah that is what i think when i see this music video from the 80s weird haha 😂
Is that true about how long it took him?
Thank you. This music video always raises 2 questions - What drugs we're they on? and where can I get some?
Two rules in hockey, 1. Don’t touch my Percocets. 2. Do you have any Percocets?
Please, react to Peter Gabriel - Modern Love.
didnt Peter inspire Michael Jackson himself to make music videos over the top???
A crazy ass video! 😂 Great artist great song, I think it's about sex.
It very much is about sex, Sound On Sound did an article on it no so long ago. Bit different from PG's usual political stuff!
could have been a tadpole?
It wasn’t. It was sperm.
Peter Gabriel was part of the band geniisis better solo artist.
