All the USA gardening channels which state categorically that tomatoes, chillis etc ABSOLUTELY need 6 - 8 hours of _sunshine_ (and even specify whether morning or afternoon sunshine is preferred!) make me laugh as I admire my nice sturdy cayenne and Serrano chilli plants, and my trays of tomato seedlings, here in Lancashire. Today is brilliant - 3pm and the sun's been shining for about an hour, after almost non-stop drizzle yesterday and most of this morning. My toms are a wee bit leggy but nothing that potting on won't solve. Their first true leaves are just starting to appear, so that isn't far away.
I know what you you mean and most things can be fixed if they stretch but once they get to a certain size they stop stretching anyway so nothing that cant be solved Thank you
Hi Ivan, wishing you good luck with your move. We live in a caravan and grow tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, onions, corn on the cob, strawberries and more all in containers successfully every year. We start off our plants in a mini greenhouse We bought from Amazon. I'm sure you'll love it!
So helpful Ivan. Looking forward to seeing you prune the moneymakers throughout the season. That’s the bit I can struggle with and I usually end up with unruly and untidy tomatoes
Hi ivan i have just set some lettuce seeds and have covered them with cling film would i be better starting them inside until germination, from linda in rotherham cheers
Great videos. It's really helpful for a newbie delving into the world of planting. I've read and watched 100s of videos, and yours are the most easiest to understand, so thank you. Only one question please..which budget compost would you recommend? I've seen bags of it in a lidl quiet cheap but not sure if it will be any good 🤔
Great advice and tips as ever Ivan. I've got Money Maker tomatoes just about at that stage so you've answered my question on when to pot the on. Do you heat your greenhouse or just let the sun do it?
Salad looks lovely Ivan, my peppers are getting true leaves now & looking good, I thought they were leggy but they seem fine. Ivan do I need to feed my cauliflowers, the heads are only really small just yet, just wondering. Thanks...
During the growing season, cauliflower plants benefit from regular fertilization to support their growth and development. It is best to apply a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 or 14-14-14, every 4-6 weeks. Alternatively, you can use a slow-release fertilizer at the beginning of the season, which will gradually release nutrients over time Sorry i meant every 4 weeks not every 2 Thank you Carol
Thanks for the update Ivan, great tomato advice. Question please Ivan, I've been given some broccoli plants but they seem leggy and floppy, could I repot them and plant them deeper like tomatoes. Thanks for sharing.
Anything I plant from seed reach a certain size like 3 cm and never grow beyond that , also weak and slim stems, l use potting mix l bought from b&q…l need help 😢😢

I dont use the cheapest from Aldi or Lidl as they never seem very good but i do use Verve from B&Q which seems ok
Thank you
Hi Ivan do you have to feed tomatoe seedlings once they get the first true leaves or is it just watering thankyou xx
Very diluted feed then leave a few weeks
Thank you

We dont heat the greenhouse but if the temps drop low i put them back indoors as frost would probably kill the plants
Thank you

Thank you Sheila and yes plant them right down to the V part of the plant so all the stem is buried and they will grow fine
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk thank you Ivan.
Hi where are you getting you pots for the lettuce and spinach please?
Hi Sheena they are from Poundland
Thank you
I've been getting washing up bowls from ASDA £1.00 each
Same here* I use the round washing up bowls* Hubby drills the holes, fantastic planters*
Anything I plant from seed reach a certain size like 3 cm and never grow beyond that , also weak and slim stems, l use potting mix l bought from b&q…l need help 😢😢
It could be due to lack of light as the plants will try to stretch and have thin stems
Thank you
