Hello Dennis . . . You made that person a happy fishing time by cleaning the inside of that reel which was caked full of hard grease plus replacing the old drag washers with new ones - good job - good video .
I wish you were in my area. I have two Shimano reels that went underwater so I took them to an authorized repair shop in West Palm Bach. When I got them back, neither on worked. I sent them back to the factory. They were screwed up so bad, striped screws, parts in backwards. They kept the reals for over a month saying parts were on order. New reals that just needed clean and lube. Shimano sent me two brand new reals.
any manufacturers have their own parts department for current products. Start there. For older reels, Southwesternparts.com carries parts for many reel manufacturers. So does ereplacementparts.com. For Penn only parts, use Mysticparts.com. Thanks for asking Dennis
i once read that the Penn HT100 drags washers were made from the same material as brakes used on aeroplanes. if grease melts then an high melting point grease would fit the bill. i use corrosion block acf 50 blue grease which is waterproof
I noticed that when you disassembled this reel you removed a washer that was between the star drag wheel and the collar, but did not replace it when you assembled the reel. I have the very same model and it has TWO washers in the same place. The original parts diagram for this older model does not show the washer(s). Do you think this washer is not necessary? Love your videos! Thanks!
The washers are spacers and you can use the reel without them as long as you have clearance between the star adjuster and the side plate. A lot of times those washers were put in there as the drags wore down. The washers raised the star adjust enough to clear the side plate.
I bought a used 114HLW and the handle seems really wobbly and the anti reverse has allot of spin back before it catches. What should I be looking at when I open it up to make a repair? Great video!
Hi Dennis, Like the videos. I want to know if you worked on a Reelsking TA3000 level wind trolling reel. I have one that was given to me that was taken apart by someone else. I can't find a diagram to re assemble the reel. I put it together but is a bit tight when I want to release the line. Thanks
A little trick to getting those stuck drag washers out of the main gear housing, boil them in a pot of water for a half hour, they should come right out !
I have never “smoked” a drag before. I wish I had hooked a fish that could do that. At my age I doubt I’ll be going deep sea trolling again. I did enough of that when I was younger. Since you do so many of these Penn reels do you just keep a supply of drag washers of varying sizes on hand? I worked on a beautiful little Penn 712Z today that had new HT100 drag washers in it. I recently got a 710Z reel as well. Do you know the size difference in those reels? I think the rotor and spool are different but the housing looks to be the same size. I like these Z reels a lot as I have 6 of them with 5 different models. I had fun getting the bearing and pinion out of that 712Z but it finally came out. I’m usually not as lucky as you with those bearings. I think I have 18 vintage Penn spinners now. - Chris
I keep commonly used Penn washers on hand, but I ordered the set for this one as it needed new metals as well. I am not sure on the size for those reels.
I replaced the old drag stack on a 114H 6/0 with an HT-100 stack but cannot seem to get more than 7 lbs of drag even if I crank the star adjuster far enough to nearly flatten the Belleville washer. Got any suggestions?
Hi Dennis my name is Matt and I have a abu garcia 3600 c black max round baitcaster that won't turn nor will the button push down and unlock the spool. And I was wondering if I could send u the reel and have u fix it?? I've had it for a long time and I'm not ready to give up on it.

Probably look for a broken bridge post. That post is under the gear sleeve and a broken one would cause the issues with the wobble and faulty A/R
Do you have to use (DRAG grease) or can you use Penn reel grease on the drag washers? Great video. Thanks
You can use the reel grease on drags and the drag grease reels. They are very similar - Thanks for asking - Dennis

You may need to add an extra washer if you were upgrading from the 3 washer stack
