Many stalwart Karnatic vocalists of yester years from Tamil Nadu with absolutely no grounding not only in Sanskrit but also in Telugu and Kannada have mutilated and mangled the sahityams very badly. This has to be brought out openly harshly. You are very polite in not using harsher words.
It is better with today’s vocalists. But still a long way to go.

Varmaji..thanks to this wonderful detailed video
Like Ramayanam, having 7 kandas, this composition also has 7 stanzas in 7 different ragas...., each stanza briefing the story outlined in each of the 7 kandas......thus, the entire song gives an outline of the great epic

🙏👏 Very happy to listen from you about Bhavayami Raghuramam. I seeing/listening to your you tube everyday. This song is special for me. I am 62 years old and I have access to internet, social media, you tube for music. My mother in her days had only radio to listen and that too in her 30s. Without any formal education in schools or Carnatic music, my mother used to sing this song very very nicely, ssme like original.
Thanks for this video updates 🙏

I have known Varma ji for nearly 20 years now and I always ask the same question. You have to spend time with him and witness the way he treats people in the service industry like taxi drivers, waiters at restaurants and so on and it would be a lesson that as just as valuable as the music lessons that he shares so generously.

Amazing. A song I ve listened to throughout my life, not thinking much about its meaningful lyrics, not very knowledgeable about nuances of music compositions, but always loved hearing it, mostly from temples far away evoking nostagia, now thanks to you, gathers new meaning and transcends from just a loved song to something Divine. My heartfelt thanks. I esp loved your ref to amar chitra katha stories and also the casual way of listening to this amazing song during our morning routines.

Even i had the opportunity of listening to this song by MSS. Early in the mornings Venkateswara Suprabhatam followed by this song was our routine for a couple of years. The devine voice of MSS would come afloat in the early morning winds to wake up & soak us in the Divinity...this country is blessed by such great souls🙏

Thank you, Sri. Varma for narrating the story behind the rebirth of 'Bhaavayaami..." composition of Maharaja Swaati Thirunaal: an evergreen encapsulation of Srimad Ramayanam. Great examples of the importance of stress and pause at relevant phrases while rendering lyrics. You reminded me of your Guru: Sri. BMK! (Balamurali Krishna). Eagerly waiting for the next part.

One point: I always wonder when it comes to Kerala cities a lot of people still use the old name like Trivandrum instead of Thiruvananthapuram, Trichur instead of Thrissur, Calicut instead Kozhikode, etc. while we all changed using Chennai for Madras or Mumbai for Bombay, etc. etc. Thank you as I always enjoyed watching you and listening to you. Beautiful.. Thank you so much for taking time to do this.
On an another note, Mohana raga has been used for veera rasa by many composers. It fits the context as well ( if rendered like that :) )
Ramasami dootan naanada in mohanam by Arunachala kavi and Narasimha Agacha by Dikshitar are good examples.

Thank you for the video, Thamburan! Great insight.
The problem is that North Indians would say words like 'Rama' as 'Ram', and South Indians would tend to say it as 'Ramaaaa'.
The correct way to say it, I have heard, from various legends, is 'Rama', with a small 'a' at the end. Just a small thought I had, when Thamburan said the word 'Ramayanam'. :)

Yes I do draw lot of parallels when I started listening, memorising this song from the age of 16,. and from the musical viewpoint this is equivalent to Naradha Maharishi Samkshipta. Ramayanam .

      Mahesh:
The Tamburaan is correct when he says “RamaayaNam.” That is how it is written in the Sanskrit original. Same with Mahaabhaaratam, Shakuntakam, Vikrama-Urvasheeyam, and Maalavikaa-agnimitram.

I don’t know whether I should laugh or cry on the way Tamil vocalists mutilate the sahityams. Because of your royal background, you are very polite. If you were a Chakkiyar artist, you would gave brutalized these Karnatic vocalists. Maybe next time, please get a good Chakkiyaar artiste to Madras Music Academy to convey the message more honestly dripping in sarcasm.
